Re:The planning of U.S. physician shortages (2020) on Saturday June 03, 2023 @01:15PM (#36178489)
This might sound crude, but a man who becomes a physician (and especially a surgeon) gets his pick of the most attractive mates as well as a high social status for life. That's pretty strong motivation for many.
Re:No dates, no sex, no weddings, no kids on Sunday April 02, 2023 @09:54AM (#35410514)
Social actions that lead to birth rate decline are a slippery slope that can be difficult to come back from without immigration. The economic conditions that have been forced on young people are bad enough for this. It will be a wait and see to witness if western nations are able to figure it out but so far many have thrown in the towel and are just relying on immigration now. Countries like Korea and Japan have so far resisted this in an attempt to keep their societies and cultures more homogenous, for which they have found many benefits.
Re:Twitter Is Dying on Tuesday March 28, 2023 @08:52PM (#35350505)
This article felt like long-form Twitter. A bunch of words that go nowhere.
At a high level, all that would have to happen is a person gives GPT, or something like it, access to a social media page and tells it to post to it with the objective of getting the highest level of interaction and followers.
If they aren't already, AIs will be posting content on social media apps. These apps measure the amount of attention you pay to each thing presented to you. If it's more than a picture or a video, but something interactive, then it could also learn how we interact with things in more complex ways. It also gets feedback from us through the comments section. Like biological mutations, AIs will learn which of its (at first) random novel creations we find utility in. It will then better learn what drives us and will learn to create and extrapolate at a much faster pace than us.
Re:Cheating Is All You Need on Thursday March 23, 2023 @11:28PM (#35284733)
Genuine question, are you seeing non-coders using it to do any useful coding? As a developer, I find that it is wrong more often than it is right and were it not for my domain knowledge, I would have no idea why (or sometimes when.)
One of my concerns is what happens when machines start making their own money. This could be possible with cryptocurrencies (another reason to loathe them.) Machines can do things online, make sex-working 3d-modelled chat-bots for instance, or do numerous other types of work, like things you see people do on Fivver. If machines start making their own money and deciding what to do with it, they could then pay humans to do things. At this point they are players in the economy with real power. This doesn't seem too far out of an idea to me.
We don't say it because we don't care. Machines moving faster than a human runner have not posed a threat to any industry or jobs in our lifetime. It's a silly comparison. I bet you there was someone at one point who was unhappy that a machine was a better or faster welder than them though. At least that person may have had the opportunity to keep working at the factory alongside the welding machine, doing QA and repairs. Most knowledge workers will not get to switch to that kind of replacement job vis-à-vis AIs.
This is not a sensible comparison. A mass-produced machine-made suit wasn't made using your exact measurements. If a human sat at a sewing machine on a factory production floor versus a machine, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
Not many get paid to do it, and those that do are paid because it's entertainment, people like watching them play. Nobody is paying to watch developers code.
I think this may be the case, the AI will figure out what the legacy code does and then completely re-writes it using whatever modern standards and ability to host it all in the cloud.
Re:THC can transfer to milk when hemp is fed to dairy cows on Wednesday November 16, 2022 @10:41PM (#33634663)
This was my thought exactly. Scrolling through this post seems like I'm on Reddit. It was a paper from Nature so worthy of conversation, but the one-liners are unnecessary and don't add anything of substance to the dialog.
Re:Ask HN: How do you deal with neck and back pain? on Wednesday August 03, 2022 @01:41PM (#32334729)
I have lordosis, and admittedly, I should be seeing a PT because the curve is getting worse. But when I'm in pain, I go for an intense bicycle ride. Something about the blood flow loosening everything up and the endorphins it releases. For hours after my body will naturally want to do those stretches that just feel so good. It will last for a handful of days and then my back and body starts to ache again and it reminds me to go again.
Re:The Scientific Paper is Obsolete (2018) on Monday December 13, 2021 @08:12PM (#29546948)
If you are working in the same niche, you will likely know the tricks of the trade. You usually have an idea of what your peers are working on and it's often a race to see who gets a paper out first. This is what conferences are for as well, to try and figure out what your peers are up to.
I've been worried in recent years about getting a big gut from diaphragmatic breathing. My BMI is low but when I breath that way (and when it feels best) my belly can really stick out. Do you have any opinion on this?
Re:Coronavirus Showed That America Wasn't Up to the Task on Monday March 16, 2020 @05:54PM (#22598394)
Unfortunately that information isn't available due to the lack of testing.
This thread is devolving and should be removed.
I remember landlines sounding quite different from the author. To me they sound much better than cell phones. It sounds as if the other person is actually on the other end of the line. Cell phones sound very artificial with compression artifacts and such.
Re:Psychedelic therapy has a sexual abuse problem on Saturday March 07, 2020 @04:58PM (#22514453)
I've always said, give someone the psychedelics and a safe place to be, but let them be on their own. Lots of travelling to do, no need to stay tethered to this realm by having to converse with a therapist.

I have a similar LG 27UD68. The game changer for me was taking off the anti glare coating. It's amazing the relief from eye strain that I got once it came off.
At my university there are a number of math requirements for the CS degree. A couple calculus courses, a couple linear algebra courses and a discrete math course. Each of them is the foundation for other CS courses, such as discrete math is for analysis of algorithms. Is this the case with these newer schools / approaches to becoming a software engineer? I for one really appreciate the math, but is it appreciated in industry? Curious to know.
There is a huge amount of ignorance in this thread right now. More people need to read the papers that have been out for 10 years on the issue of conversion of ranitidine to NDMA inside the body. The real issue is not tainted drugs or exposure to heat, it's processes in the body which are converting ranitidine to NDMA, which result in NDMA levels in the body increasing over 400 fold. Here's one https://academic.oup.com/carcin/article/37/6/625/1744630
This is not correct. Studies have clearly shown that if you give someone a moderate dose of ranitidine, the NDMA levels in their urine skyrocket. upwards of 400 times higher if I remember correctly. This is higher than in people who have bladder cancer due to schistosomiasis, a disease causing increased levels of NDMA in the body.

There are somatic processes, likely starting in the stomach and concluding in the liver, which are efficiently converting ranitidine to NDMA. Here's just one study. https://academic.oup.com/carcin/article/37/6/625/1744630

Re:Incels: America’s Newest Domestic Terrorism Threat on Sunday January 12, 2020 @11:13AM (#22026978)
I believe most good psychologists have the ability to treat incels. It comes down to the incel wanting it and having access to it. Unfortunately our society doesn't offer adequate mental health care to those in need but who are lacking in resources. Whether it's incels, drug addicts, or you name it, the answer is that we need to do a better job of taking care of each other. Unfortunately we have the greedy ultra rich on top who keep siphoning off the fruits of our labour and leaving everyone else to fight over the scraps. We could do better.
Re:Incels: America’s Newest Domestic Terrorism Threat on Sunday January 12, 2020 @10:53AM (#22026805)
Celibacy is just one of their many problems. And it's really more a consequence of their other problems, mainly emotional immaturity and anti-social behavior.

Also I don't think sex workers should have to deal with incels. Sex workers are people too, and they deserve to be shown a basic amount of respect by their clients, just like the rest of us.

But isn't that a sinister side of it too? Burn out and disengage those of us who are rational and reasonable.

Only 150 more years till we can apply to Starfleet...

I like that 'guru' quote. When it comes to the trip. I always hear about the 'have a sober friend, or a trip buddy, etc' I've never thought this was the best idea. I think it could be worse for someone in a bad state to have to deal with other people.

Let a person be by themselves. Chances are they will just sit there and go through the corridors of their mind. There may be sheer terror, and at some point there will hopefully (likely) be peace and euphoria. If nothing else it will wear off in a handful of hours and if they were just sitting by themselves then they can hopefully shake it off and get on with things. I think it's dealing with other people that could raise the situation to unstable levels.

Re:How Crisco Made Americans Believers in Industrial Food on Monday December 23, 2019 @11:51AM (#21864906)
That's a stunning number.
Disappointing to see some of the comments. I'm thinking a number of posters here haven't tried hallucinogens...
I can appreciate the inquiry, but I would expect a senior biology undergrad to be able to write a comprehensive paper on a topic like this based solely on the information that's been published.
