Re:Just a little AI resistance, as a treat on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @10:57AM (#50353594)
Exactly! I absolutely don't mind AI generated responses as long as it is accompanied by an AI generated ticket/bug along with an AI generated fix, along with an AI generated regression/integration test and AI generated message saying it was fixed. An AI generated coupon/reward for the trouble is also fine.

If this is the workflow that a consumer experiences, I don't think majority will complain about AI.

No. Applying your own logic you got this wrong
They are making a deliberate trade-off decision token use for their own vs token use for the rest of the world. while Google is making the opposite bet

In order to correctly make that decision, they must use the opportunity cost of selling that token. I'm pushing back at OPs claim that Anthropic must use internal cost to calculate that trade-off. They absolutely should use external selling price.

Excess capacity sitting idle is the cardinal sin in modern economy. I was merely pushing back at the insinuation that internal costs should be used to measure internal resource use. No. The costs should always be external market price because that's where you are making the correct trade-offs.

Bank reserves, Compute etc are trade-off decisions. Buffett vs Mayoshi Anthropic vs Google are being played out in real-time for us. Pretty soon you'll know which trade-off was better.

No. This is opportunity cost.

A clear example is Google. They can easily give all compute to Deepmind, yet majority is allocated to be sold at market rate.

So, every compute Deepmind and Googlers get is lost revenue opportunity and must be measured as such.

No other internal tools or servers has this much external demand to be comparable.

Also, Anthropic is showing that to operate at Anthropic level, you need $300,000 compute spend per employee

There was never any backstop to equity investors at any time.

Even during GFC, equity investors were wiped out. Same with Silicon Valley Bank.

This trope that investors are bailed out is doing more harm than good. Because intervention and backstops actually helps the economy from not going into a death spiral that destroys the poor and middle class

Why would anyone automate a bad process.

When Waymo automates self-driving it isn't automating bad drivers. So are robots on Amazon warehouses

Autonation is the only true way out of incompetence.

Eventually everyone will come around e/acc.

Re:Wikipedia's Cleanup of AI-Generated Content on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @02:37PM (#50263756)
As the biggest cheerleader of AI, I like to have a few sources that are free of AI and Wikipedia is one of the few perfect places to embrace this.

Of course AI can be used to check sources, get critical feedback and translate to languages. But content should be 100% human driven.

Re:Hello Toronto – Waymo Is En Route on Friday October 16, 2026 @08:16PM (#50126486)
The past does not repeat.

But if you are going against 200 years (some say even 10,000 years) civilization trends, you better have extremely strong data points to prove this time is different

Re:Artificial intelligence is capitalism's final destination on Friday October 16, 2026 @10:41AM (#50118948)
Wow, a very balanced article and the author has no bias at all using Artificial Idiocy, Oligarchy.

And Thiel was parsing a real subtlety: endure as what? He favors transhumanist transformation, not a frozen Homo sapiens. But someone with a preinstalled Thiel-hate (like the author) didn’t hear nuance.

So, she is protesting against People having their food delivered to them?
Re:CPI-U rises 7.2% annualized in September (3.7% YoY) on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @01:02PM (#50090955)
Yes and no. At the end of the day, there is a certain natural demand for goods/services and a natural production capacity.

Suppressing demand below natural production capacity is just chopping of your own arm. That's why Interest rates are the Big(O) factor it is made out to be. It is always government policies

-- allow economy to operate at full capacity

-- don't print (borrow) money more than full capacity

Re:CPI-U rises 7.2% annualized in September (3.7% YoY) on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @11:43AM (#50089462)
This is a naive understanding.

If you bomb your supply chains, no amount of interest rate manipulation will make it come down (supply shock through destruction of capacity)

If you make all doctors/lawyers to undergo recertification, medical costs will skyrocket (supply shock through regulation)

If you deport all your construction workers, bringing construction to a screeching halt, housing costs will skyrocket (supply shock through xenophobia)

tl;dr The Big(0) cause of inflation are capacity (supply) and other stupid governmental responses to it. (printing more money)

Interest rates actually come way below these factors.

Interest rates will never discourage corrupt governments from printing (borrowing) more money and giving them to the mass .

Re:CPI-U rises 7.2% annualized in September (3.7% YoY) on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @10:54AM (#50088638)
If salaries also took the elevator, then it's a recipe for hyperinflation. Slow wage growth is a natural check on runaway inflation. Yes, it's cruel on an individual level, but on a macro level, we are better off.

The ideal way inflation should come down is increased capacity and/or lower government spending

Re:Redesigning Source Control at Anthropic on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @06:28PM (#50079804)
Source control has fine-grained metadata that is invaluable for LLMs.

They can just analyze PRs and diffs without loading the entire 10,000 line file.

Also, anti-AI folks really have a fundamental misunderstanding of how everything works in the LLM world and is probably why all their predictions are wrong

If he is really as good as you say, you can literally ask Claude as to how to go about getting visibility.

It's just a search problem now.

Re:US Suspends Visa Program for Tech Firms Including Microsoft on Thursday October 08, 2026 @03:22PM (#50010725)
I'm not sure there is any advantage in publishing this in a remote town rather than NYC and SF.

Any tech savvy person in NYC or SF would not be scouring newspapers for tech jobs and even if they are, they are most likely to be H1B or Greencard themselves.

A small town newspaper may actually make people apply to those roles.

But either way, people who likely to come through these ads can be easily disqualified just by adding a few technology stacks

Re:OpenAI Withdraws 3 Math Papers on Thursday October 08, 2026 @01:15PM (#50008684)
If there is a market demand, skills will find a way, especially in non-regulated industries like Software Engineering with $0 barriers to entry and no government certification
Re:OpenAI Withdraws 3 Math Papers on Thursday October 08, 2026 @11:47AM (#50007271)
We are not in the 1930s.

If you have made it to the point of being a Junior Developer, I can assure you food and shelter is not a problem for them. You just have to adjust to a standard of living like the other 7 Billion people on this world.

Also, if a Junior Developer can show me(or anyone) they have built an entire system on their own and explain key concepts, there is no dearth of jobs for them

Re:OpenAI Withdraws 3 Math Papers on Thursday October 08, 2026 @11:35AM (#50007100)
There is nothing preventing Junior Developers to develop their own systems and understand it.

In fact, the world is always filled with curious people who like to go one level below.

This hysteria about losing "Junior Software Engineers" -- most of them in it for money, promotion rather than craftmanship, is over-rated.

People who love solving puzzles will always find ways to sharpen their mind.

People who love understanding things, will always find ways (AI will help them tremendously).

People who love taking shortcuts will always find ways for it (AI or not)

Science 101. There is no causation and very poor correlation
If you had bought META/FB every time there was a negative hit-piece from the media, you'd be very very rich
only if you are ok with working with an idiot model and lose out on potential upsides of using a smarter model. Penny-wise, pound-foolish
Re:Meta's Muse Is an Adorable Privacy and Security Dumpster Fire on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @10:43AM (#49993566)
Meta had to pay out because the entire country is brainwashed with anti-Bigtech hate and 99.99% are clueless about correlation != causation and there is no point in fighting the court where the media will make sure to amplify 1 in 100 Million cases as thought it's the norm.

I mean some of the smartest people on HN fall for it, where is the hope for general masses?

Re:Meta's Muse Is an Adorable Privacy and Security Dumpster Fire on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @10:41AM (#49993536)
Can you point me to causation studies please? or are you the type who believe in social sciences (using self-reported, biased data) with 0.10 R2 values and think that's the smoking gun?
Re:Mistral Large 4 on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @02:16PM (#49982084)
Those are not marginal cost or unit economics
[citation needed]

Note: Unless you spin an alternative universe there is no way you can prove causality of social media usage => happiness/depression.

For a supposedly science-based cohort we aren't using any science aren't we?

There is ZERO proven causality between social media usage (specifically Meta products) and long-term happiness of a person. All the social science are spurious correlations that can be attributed to anything (including higher education where hysteria about the modern world reins)

As far as $17B settlement, it has nothing to do with causality. It's just some $$$ set aside for Meta to remove operational headaches.

I could even say Meta-haters make more irrational life decisions compared to normal people who just browse Instagram and use WhatsApp without paranoia

False analogies won't make your case.

There are plenty of happy, successful people who didn't die because they used a Meta product.

In fact I'd even argue that all things equal, a Meta user is happier than a paranoid-meta-hater who worries every minute that someone is going to serve them an Ad that fits them

"oh, the horror!!!. How am I ever going to recover from the trauma and financial ruin of seeing a targeted ad."
