I don't have it on a kill-a-watt even though I should. As the person below you said, it's like 1.5 to 2x power consumption vs a pi4 at idle (Under 10w), but that is still comically small amounts, about the same as a Google Nest Hub.

This. I replaced my Homebridge/PiHole RasPi 4B 4GB with a J4125 Acer Desktop system at a cost of $88, all in with all accessories needed from ebay. It has 4GB of upgradable ram, a reasonable SSD, 1G ethernet, and a bonus Sata port for a NAS. It even included a power supply! Pihole's web UI is shockingly faster for me too.

Edit: Link to system, price went up a little, still better than a Pi. https://www.ebay.com/itm/255186968611?epid=8048445783&hash=i...

I know, but I was noting that it isn't even any definition of half here.

I don't know what their value of 'half' is but this isn't the more commonly defined definition of 50%.

Re:Virtual DOM is pure overhead on Wednesday February 01, 2023 @11:29AM (#34612889)
I always find these a little funny. "[Commonly held thought with some convenient tweaks] is WRONG...so use our stuff!"

Even open source projects are guilty of this type of grifting, everyone wants to win, even without money in the game.

So does Apple, it’s all the same.

Either is an upside. That’s a huge contract that any payment processor would kill for.

This assumes Stripe is not outperforming expectations. .which seeing the Amazon deal....

Yeah it also called black people an 'angry race' in one of mine, it's rather racist and careless internally, probably uninitional, looks like just one person's work and it can be funny at times.
Fuschia powers the current, on sale, Nest Hub
At component level, yeah no impossible but for general resale it wouldn't be too hard. I'm pretty sure the Face ID and Touch ID modules already do this.

You would need to add some general identifiers to parts with a GUID and at production/official repair time, register those parts to an iPhone S/N. If Activation locked, those parts would need to not be able to be registered to another iphone until the original device is unlocked, thus clearing those parts.

> They might not be resold at full price, but even selling to a fence for parts is profitable if your acquisition cost is zero.

Apple has started blacklisting parts associated with locked iPhones. At this point the only reusable bit is the case and possibly battery. The display, Face ID, Touch sensor, and such are all bricked. Overall the reduction is massive in any form. There isn't a 100% effective solution but you can easily cut down on 90%.

Nope. IT failure. Also, activation lock of a company device could easily be considered vandalism.
This! One of the biggest upsides. Apple goods were the gold prize for thiefs back a few years ago.
This. Activation Lock is an Anti-Theft, not a privacy mesure. By making stolen hardware a brick, it reduces the upside to a thief to pennies on the dollar. This makes the legal risk not worth it. Thus: massive drops in theft. https://techcrunch.com/2015/02/11/apples-activation-lock-lea...
It's more than data. Apple's disk encryption already does that on iOS.

Activation lock isn't just data protection: It is Anti-theft. The concept was that bricking the hardware if it is stolen would reduce the, at the time, massive rise of theft. Activation lock on iOS (and all kinds of keying hardware to that board) basically shut down cell phone theft as they become worthless. They added the same to MacOS.

My favorite thing is "Our new design is so screwed that it violently vibrates to the point that the crew cant read screens...How can we modify the screen to work?" rather than "Hey..uh, how do we make it not violently do this?"

The hiring of teachers is approved by community elected school boards.

FL laws take that power from communities and puts it in State level hands. Your point is upside-down and tries to paint heavy handed big-government rules as better in fact.

Also who said anything about DC? The point was about letting teachers, parents, and yes, minors; make choices for kids. This is whitewashing extremist beliefs over communities that very well may disagree, exactly what you imply this protects lol.

Might be a local thing. I tried earlier and can't find one within 100 miles, central PA. $550 bundles everywhere though

> A PS5 is 10.3 Tflops and costs $400.

There is a good argument that the standard PS5 costs $550. Sony has prioritized Disk production so digital base is hard to find still, Sony then has happily bundled it with GOW for a total of $550. Still cheaper but eh.

The PS5 has exclusives though. A better comparison is the Series X. Windows and Xbox basically have a 100% crossover of games due to well..obvious reasons. Series X is totally available for $499.

Re:Show HN: My $900.00 12 Tflops Gaming PC Build on Monday January 23, 2023 @12:01PM (#34491561)
Gaming but I would note that the 5600X is a fine workstation CPU, the 6650XT is a good editing GPU, and with 32 or GB of ram, this can pretty much do anything at an acceptable level.
Re:Show HN: My $900.00 12 Tflops Gaming PC Build on Monday January 23, 2023 @11:59AM (#34491530)
If you went for the 12100f, a B660m, 3200 Ram, and a 500GB nvme, (Fractal Pop Air, etc) you can do this build, brand new, for ~750. 5600X is a little better for multicore but I prefer the 12th gen upgrade path.

With used parts and dropping to a 6600 XT (The 6650 is just a factory OC), I wouldn't be shocked to find out you can outperform the standard available PS5 bundle for similar money. ($550)

This law explicitly bans discussion of Gay people.

Re:Unapproved books now a felony in Manatee County schools on Monday January 23, 2023 @11:23AM (#34490825)
Conceptually, if the government defines the teaching, at what point do the people run the government and at what point does the government run the people?

Also, politics in America are way more messy than that. The choice becomes "People you agree 50% with or people you agree 20% with?". I would bet that if this were put to a statewide vote, it would not pass.

Re:Unapproved books now a felony in Manatee County schools on Monday January 23, 2023 @11:17AM (#34490727)
Translation: The above comment is REALLY mad that kids can learn about the existence of gay people or about how sex and STDs are spread and they feel the need to ensure kids are not told about this topic and that teachers get jail time for mentioning it.

Make no mistake, schools make choices all the time. This decision align those choices to far more insane rules by..guess what...an activist government instead.

A great example of this is John Green's Looking For Alaska. It has a sex scene that is objectively banned by this law.

That very sex scene is an example of why sex should not be the primary goal of a relationship (it goes poorly) and is directly contrasted with a moment of actual love in the very next chapter as an example of how sex is not the most valuable thing about a relationship. It is a scapegoat for politicians and angry...activist...PTA members to simplify the topic "This book has a charater giving a BLOW JOB!!! My 16 year old is asked to READ IT?! These teachers and librarians are sick!" NOBODY's KID SHOULD READ IT.

Might I add, almost EVERY school keeps a list of alternative books and gives parents the option to opt out.

It's Gay marriage and descriptions of sex today, Alan Turing today cannot be fully explained in a book.

Maybe tomorrow it will be Hitler. "It is too violent of a topic and parents should have the right to keep their kids from reading left-wing details like the holocaust."

Re:Unapproved books now a felony in Manatee County schools on Monday January 23, 2023 @11:04AM (#34490502)
Additionally, the content of the book has to pass rather insane content rules, including banning any description or implication of homosexuality. Wildly, they branded it as 'Parents rights' as in: "If I don't want my kid to read X...NOBODY's should". The outcome is an attempt to whitewash out topics that are inconvenient to the agenda at play to protect the agenda long term.

$5 says it just makes teen pregnancy happen at higher rates btw.

My guess is that Stripe is way better at international payments and by moving US to stripe they can have a single payment processor worldwide.
