We test these things in production.
Re:Asahi Linux Progress Report: Linux 6.19 on Thursday February 19, 2026 @03:43AM (#47071443)
The keyboard has a much shorter lifespan than the SSD, and it's incredibly difficult/expensive to replace.

A single bad key or trace and any Apple laptop is basically toast. $800+ to have Apple replace the top cover.

Maybe an independent shop can do it cheaper, I don't know.

Waymo has posted videos of accidents they've avoided purely because their lidar picked up on a pedestrian before their cameras saw anything.

Um, yes they did.

No idea if it had any relation to Tesla though.

Through Azure, Office, LinkedIn, gaming. Not so much Windows.

Isn't my watch always with me? Why not use that instead of have some new device?

They integrated "MetNet-3" into Google products and my personal perception was accuracy decreased.

I'm assuming the "Gemini 2.5" referenced on this site is Flash, not Pro. Pro is insane, and 3.0 is just around the corner.

reAmp (https://re-amp.ru/) is a faithful recreation as well, but no updates since 2020 (and not OSS)

Re:Tesla coast-to-coast FSD crashes after 60 miles on Monday September 22, 2025 @08:53AM (#45332740)
It's because anecdotal experience means very little. In ~2021, these vehicles could almost never make it from A to B without a safety-critical intervention.

That they can today doesn't mean they can do the same route 10,000 times without a safety-critical intervention. In fact, public tracking indicates Tesla's numbers are MUCH lower than that.

Re:Tesla coast-to-coast FSD crashes after 60 miles on Monday September 22, 2025 @08:46AM (#45332668)
The humans in the vehicle spotted it fine, and we should not tolerate self-driving systems that are only as good as the worst of us.
Re:Tesla coast-to-coast FSD crashes after 60 miles on Monday September 22, 2025 @08:29AM (#45332485)
A friend of mine who loves Tesla watched this video and said "many humans would have hit that". I feel we'll be hearing a lot of that excuse.
Indeed. They'll use this to hurt companies they want to hurt.
Has any open-source project done it better? Serious question, I've been looking.
Re:Jokes and Humour in the Public Android API on Monday June 16, 2025 @03:20AM (#44287319)
Reminds me of BeOS (and now Haiku), which have "is_computer_on()" and "is_computer_on_fire()" both with great descriptions.

Gold-197? The article does not specify.
3DES isn't as easy to exploit versus, say SSLv3 and RC4 which were both quickly removed.
The DMC-12 has a classic movie attached to it. If it didn't, most every single one of them that exists today would be in the scrap heap.

It's not like you can't doomscroll TikTok on an iPhone 8. I don't think getting slightly lower FPS on 3D games would lower addiction rates.
Re:Waymos crash less than human drivers on Wednesday March 26, 2025 @06:02PM (#43487932)
Both the longer wait time and the double price can likely be explained by the lack of highway.

Highway is coming.

And scale will make it cheaper. It's only cheaper than Uber sometimes currently. That will change.

Do it. Quite a bit has improved in the last few years and I've entirely replaced Windows.

After the Act. Read the very first line of JFK's order that created it.

Something like USAID is established by statute (The Foreign Assistance Act of 1961). It cannot be eliminated or gutted by executive order.

Sidestepping this, which is happening left and right currently, is democracy failing.

Re:Starship Flight 7 on Thursday January 16, 2025 @06:21PM (#42732219)
Load it in Chrome and cast the tab. Sucks that you have to involve your computer for the duration, but that's the most reliable way to do it IMO.
Re:Qwen2.5 Turbo extends context length to 1M tokens on Monday November 18, 2024 @03:50PM (#42176842)
Seems a very difficult problem to produce a response just on the text given and not past training. An LLM that can do that would seem to be quite more advanced than what we have today.

Though I would say humans would have difficulty too -- say, having read The Three Body problem before, then reading a slightly modified version (without being aware of the modifications), and having to recall specific details.

Re:Waymo closes $5.6B investment round on Friday October 25, 2024 @10:25PM (#41952021)
It's impressive software for an ADAS.

But it's not a robotaxi. Even its level of sensor and compute redundancy is not ready to be a robotaxi. Nothing shown at the Cybercab event changed that. They go for form over reliability every time.

With HW3, they ate their redundant compute node because they underestimated the compute required for the task.

Now even with the redundant node utilized for non-redundant purposes, that doesn't seem to be enough as they are finally admitting HW3 will never not be "supervised".

And then the many years of lying about its upcoming readiness. There are websites out there where you can find all of Musk's quotes about it being just around the corner, or their current generation of vehicles all becoming money-making robotaxis with a little software update worldwide.

There's no indication at all they'll break out of the 100-120 miles per safety disengagement they currently sit at (community tracker, Tesla themselves doesn't publish reviewable safety data).

You being happy that your car can finally make zero intervention trips is NOT the standard necessary for taking the driver out of the seat.

Re:Waymo closes $5.6B investment round on Friday October 25, 2024 @01:26PM (#41947423)
You're not going to be taking that roundabout at 50 mph. That why, significantly before the roundabout, there's a 15 mph roundabout warning that FSD completely ignores.
Re:Waymo closes $5.6B investment round on Friday October 25, 2024 @11:56AM (#41946491)
I have videos of safety critical interventions in v12.5. Here's one of it attempting to drive straight through a roundabout at 50 miles per hour:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1XagBTmpgw

Your understanding of remote support is entirely wrong. At no point can a remote operator "drive" a Waymo. They confirm or change plans when the car gets stuck -- that's it.
