This explains Trump.

Re:Understanding ZFS Scrubs and Data Integrity on Tuesday January 20, 2026 @02:39AM (#46689000)
With HDDs, it's also mechanical wear and increased chance of a failure. SSDs are not fully immune to increased load either.
Re:Understanding ZFS Scrubs and Data Integrity on Tuesday January 20, 2026 @02:37AM (#46688982)
Generally, it's possible to have data which is not corrupted but which is logically inconsistent (incorrect).

Imagine that a directory ZAP has an entry that points to a bogus object ID. That would be an example. The ZAP block is intact but its content is inconsistent.

Such things can only happen through a logical bug in ZFS itself, not through some external force. But bugs do happen.

If your search through OpenZFS bugs you will find multiple instances. Things like leaking objects or space, etc. That's why zdb now has support for some consistency checking (bit not for repairs).

Re:RAM is so expensive, Samsung won't even sell it to Samsung on Friday December 05, 2025 @08:47AM (#46161201)
Even RDIMM / LRDIMM prices have recently started going up. And I thought that those would be safe, because neither "big AI" nor regular consumers need them.

Used RDIMM / LRDIMM prices have also started going up, quickly.
Re:Eating Stinging Nettles on Thursday November 06, 2025 @03:10PM (#45839783)
I remember it as borsch with nettle. Nettle was one of the first green things in the spring, just after snow melted. Nettle borsch was cooked just like the regular one but with nettle instead of cabbage.
Re:Using FreeBSD to make self-hosting fun again on Monday November 03, 2025 @02:40AM (#45796724)
In practice, it's not as easy as it may sound.
Yeah, in a place where they live. Whatever it happens to be (and doesn't have to stay the same).
Re:Don't Guess My Language on Monday May 19, 2025 @05:09PM (#44034889)
I agree that it's most stupid and most annoying kind of localizing. I search for some specific product (or other information), get a link to an English version of the page (and perhaps the only one). But when I follow the link I get redirected to my language version of the site, most often its portal page. Sometimes because the language specific site does not have a page for the thing I searched, but most often because the site is lazy. And then I have to search again but using the site tools instead of my search engine of choice.
Protecting children from real or perceived threats, temptations, evil things, etc was much easier in the physical world. In the virtual world it's much harder to put up fences.
Re:Why do I run FreeBSD for my home servers on Monday March 31, 2025 @04:37PM (#43539675)
ZFS is part of the OS on FreeBSD. Integrated more tightly in every respect.
Re:Carl Sagan Predicts the Decline of America (1995) on Wednesday February 05, 2025 @08:48AM (#42948425)
That was back then when people believed in their country, in republic and democracy...
> If you own a house you are part of a Ponzi scheme in most developed nations.

Not unless you explicitly choose to. If you own a house to have a roof above you, to have a comfortable and safe place for you and your family, if you love and care about that place, then that's what you are getting out of the house. Its monetary value changes are "just" a side story.

But if you buy a house purely as an investment, then yeah.

Re:Sweden Seizes Ship Suspected of Baltic Sea 'Sabotage' on Monday January 27, 2025 @07:42AM (#42840528)
100 cable "faults", but only 2/3-rd are from ships. And, then, how many of those have been in the Baltic Sea in prior years? 66 incidents per year sounds like a lot, but there are so many cables and shipping lanes all over the world.
Re:Why Tech Giants Can't Stop Hoarding H-1B Visas on Thursday January 16, 2025 @03:36AM (#42722901)
Rad idea: limit H-1B to product companies, exclude consulting / body-shop companies.

You may find esp-link interesting: https://github.com/jeelabs/esp-link I've built a WiFi<->RS232 bridge using the firmware, ESP8266 and a UART<->RS232 converter module. All hardware is very cheap.
Those wars do affect climate. They do affect global economy.
Re:Hezbollah pager explosions kill several people in Lebanon on Wednesday September 18, 2024 @05:31AM (#41577644)
The point was probably to reduce accidental casualties. Also, the wounds can be quite severe. Finally, a device like a pager cannot hold a lot of explosive substance in its spare space anyway.
Re:Hezbollah pager explosions kill several people in Lebanon on Wednesday September 18, 2024 @05:22AM (#41577595)
Hamas terrorists boarding commercial airplanes? With their secret pagers on them?

Somehow I don't think so.

Re:NSA releases 1982 Grace Hopper lecture on Monday August 26, 2024 @05:27PM (#41362378)
Well, if growing or breeding bigger oxen were as feasible as building bigger (mower powerful) computers was/is, perhaps people would take a different path? In other words, perhaps the analogy is flawed?
Telegram blah blah, according to Telegram.
Pavel Durov is a social media?

I thought he was a human being.

Re:Inventing Cyrillic on Tuesday May 28, 2024 @04:43AM (#40498724)
There have been several Latin based scripts proposed for Ukrainian over many decades. So, if you haven't heard, you just haven't been interested.

Hope you find comfort in fact that smart guys in China don't have such reservations and smart guys in North Korea don't have any options.
