Given that the top comment yesterday said “this is insane […] I’m shook” I’d say no, it wasn’t all that obvious to everyone.

As someone who uses LLMs in their coding but doesn’t pay attention to every development this is why I find it all so exhausting. There’s no point reading incremental updates because everything is so overhyped.

Re:Apple reports fourth quarter results on Monday November 02, 2026 @10:03PM (#50347493)
That’s not what I’m saying. They could take an open model, create their own variation of it, then embed that on devices. Just like they have with their OS.
Re:Apple reports fourth quarter results on Monday November 02, 2026 @07:43PM (#50346434)
Or open models become competitive? They have an entire OS based on OpenStep and FreeBSD after all.
Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Monday November 02, 2026 @12:05AM (#50333334)
No one seems to have a problem dealing with multiple streaming providers. They’re essentially just different submenus on the TV app.

Compare that to setting up a home server with a ton of storage, setting up torrenting/newsgroups, software to check for new releases and automatically download them, probably a VPN too… it’s a whole different world.

Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @08:20PM (#50331885)
Jellyfin and Plex cannot stream from major streaming providers. Yes, I know the answer is pirating content but that’s a complete paradigm shift compared to what most people are used to. It’s an absolutely enormous extra requirement when you’re suggesting someone switch their TV to Linux.
Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @05:35PM (#50330638)
Does Apple sell data on what I’m watching to third parties?

Linux is not a viable option for TV for the vast majority of users. There are no sit back, remote driven apps for the services they use.

Re:The AI cost of JavaScript frameworks on Sunday November 01, 2026 @07:11AM (#50324871)
One size never fits all on the web. Although those references to elements can be costly they’re also valuable. If all you used was HTML string manipulation then event handling would be an utter nightmare. You’d have to make every event handler a global variable so you can specify it in onchange=“” callbacks and the like.

I’m the first to complain about the bloat of modern frameworks but stepping all the way back to HTML strings would be a total mess for anything relying on heavy interactivity.

Re:The AI cost of JavaScript frameworks on Sunday November 01, 2026 @07:07AM (#50324846)
I think HTMX has a wall where it makes sense to pivot to something else. In your case I’d imagine using something like Svelte would get you the same speed benefit over React but without the extra work required to get the agent to cooperate.
Yes, you are. On the record just means “for publication”, as in, you are aware that what you’re saying is going to be repeated publicly. The phrase has nothing to do with public attribution.

> On-the-record, in journalism, means anything in a communication may be publicly disclosed

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_the_Record

This is how news reporting works. The sources are not willing to speak publicly because they're talking about classified information. The NYT has verified their identity. You have to trust that NYT is right.

I realize that's an unsatisfactory answer for many. But it's how journalism has to work sometimes.

Re:Patrick Stewart has died on Friday October 30, 2026 @08:45AM (#50303138)
I feel like the rise of "virtue signaling" as a critique is a symptom of all of this: if I see someone visibly doing something good then it isn't actually good, rather they're just showcasing how much better they are than other people. Somehow a positive trait becomes a negative one.
Re:Patrick Stewart has died on Thursday October 29, 2026 @08:49PM (#50298494)
> To have a character whose main traits included compassion and reason was a good influence on my generation of men.

I agree and although the prestige TV era has produced some wonderful TV it’s also been overflowing with antiheroes. I hope todays younger generation gets to see another character like Picard.

> We have no clue what actually happened.

We have on the record sources saying that he was not warned by the government. Hence me saying this is a story about government failure.

I’m yet to see evidence that getting more in your youth makes you want less as you age.
I disagree, I think this piece is the consequence of the Trump administration’s inaction. It isn’t even really a hit on Jensen:

> Mr. Huang has not received a defensive briefing, warnings sometimes given to Americans who are being targeted by foreign intelligence services, people briefed on the surveillance said.

It’s essentially saying intelligence was gathered that a Chinese asset was close to Jensen and absolutely nothing was done about it.

So wild to be living in a time where the most powerful man in the world is very obviously turning senile and those that surround him choose to indulge his outbursts rather than address the problem.
Re:DoorDash to Acquire Instacart on Thursday October 29, 2026 @09:24AM (#50288656)
How many examples do we need of the Trump administration doing some illegal move then getting slapped down by the courts? This would be a slam dunk for DoorDash. That they chose to capitulate instead is damning.
Re:Gemini 4 Carbon on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @10:51PM (#50284019)
For sure. It was an acquisition, though.
The users that comment aren’t thrilled. Don’t mistake that for the user base in general. (though don’t completely disregard them either, they’re power users)

I can only speak for myself but suggestions for ingredient substitutions (if they’re good, which is the crucial part!) would be a really useful feature for me.

This quote feels illustrative:

> “The internet is full of AI cooking content. I pay you because I prefer mine done by people.”

From my reading of it they’re not using AI to make recipes. Just to add optional features that let you modify a recipe a human made. It feels telling that they’re not even engaging with what the new feature is.

Re:Genie 4 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @06:11PM (#50266571)
Except that movies don’t replace video games. They’re entirely different mediums.
Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @12:49PM (#50246891)
January 2025 isn’t even two years ago yet. When you’re talking about giant companies going public you want to be looking at significantly longer timescales than that.
Re:OLED iPad Mini on Monday October 26, 2026 @10:16AM (#50244131)
That's a problem already solved by having a lower refresh rate, though. You can't get extra battery drain from 120hz when your device can only achieve 60hz.
Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @09:55AM (#50243775)
Feels like being asked to invest in IBM just as other manufacturers started releasing the first PC compatible machines.

Immediate term Anthropic, OpenAI rule the roost. But this is a very new technology and open models are already looking good. They’ll only get better. Is it realistic to think Anthropic will stay ahead of them enough to justify the valuation they’re asking for?

Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @09:15AM (#50243083)
Their financials are an utter mess. But they’re also hyped enough that a lot of money will get invested in them. Should they crash a lot of money will be lost.
Re:Lula wins election after final votes tallied on Sunday October 25, 2026 @09:29PM (#50237938)
> Gerrymandering doesn’t change the fact that the voters decide the results.

Well it does change which voters decide the results. A lot of electoral systems seek to constantly redress imbalance by having impartial bodies redraw district lines as populations shift. It is a shame the US does not. Gerrymandering is fundamentally undemocratic.

I have sympathy for the users of these subs. I imagine you’d want to come to /r/opensource to discuss the code. The whys, the hows. When the answer every time is “because that’s what Claude chose” it’s not going to make for interesting discussions.
I see the opposite: the OP cherry picked the weakest of a long list of examples. The other reactions you’re seeing in the thread are based on all the discoveries, not just that one.

It’s disappointing to see it upvoted to the top of the thread. Seems many people are looking to dismiss the issue rather than fully consider it.

Re:Xbox Turns Down Netflix $500M Offer on Sunday October 25, 2026 @12:11AM (#50228242)
Wouldn’t the price increases on consoles also affect PCs? GPUs aren’t exactly cheap right now.

> This means it's harder and harder to say "here's a unique experience you only get on Xbox" (or Playstation for that matter)

That’s also been the case for a very long time. That’s why they sign deals for exclusives.

> They are politically and societally paralyzed from building even basic things like datacenters

The only reason the US is not paralyzed is because the government is completely disregarding the views of voters on the topic. I struggle to see that as better.

(before someone says it: yes, I think the anti-data center sentiment is overblown. But the answer is convincing voters of why it’s good, not ignoring them)
