Re:Gemini 4 Carbon on Thursday October 29, 2026 @02:51AM (#50285339)
Apart from search, what did Google make in house?
I really would like to understand how it can be 60 times cheaper. Is that a like for like comparison? Is there a more equivalent frontier model that is closer in price?
Re:Decade-old RAM is making a comeback on Sunday October 11, 2026 @04:08AM (#50040701)
100% agree. This is generally a good news story. The e-waste issue is one of the darker aspects of tech which is mostly ignored. We should promote brands like Fairphone and Framework that are trying to make a difference here. Reuse more of your kit!
I strongly suspect one HN post (or two now) is not even in the same ballpark. I could ask Claude to figure it out but that would be a complete waste of time and energy. ;)
I wonder how much co2 is being thrown into the atmosphere everyday through the steady stream of “look what I made this LLM do” and endless “benchmarking”?

Sigh

Re:Mistral Large 4 on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @06:42AM (#49990885)
Do we have any published data on the proportion of LLM market by the category of usage?

-software development -business productivity -consumer chat -other?

I’m sure the big AI vendors know.

Re:Gemini ending free use of Flash and Pro models on Saturday October 03, 2026 @10:46AM (#49944767)
I would be curious to see how Steve Jobs would have delivered AI tools via Apple. The current mess of agents, harnesses is a utter shambles for the average non-techie.
Re:Big Tech ruined the cloud, so we're renaming ours on Friday October 02, 2026 @11:41AM (#49934767)
Sadly way overpriced for what you get. You can achieve the same for free with a Cloudflare tunnel. It’s great that this service supports the development of home assistant but the pricing is just silly.
Forgive my lack of understanding but how long before Jev type functionality is just built straight into all frontier models?
Re:EV Sales Are Booming in Europe with Gasoline at $10 a Gallon on Sunday September 27, 2026 @07:02PM (#49871697)
That’s about 9 hours of driving. Don’t you need to stop at least once to take a leak?
Re:ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026 on Sunday September 27, 2026 @01:07AM (#49863520)
Have you been to San Francisco lately? Huge swathes of the city look like scenes from Resident evil
Re:ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026 on Sunday September 27, 2026 @01:02AM (#49863496)
How do we measure quality of life?

Life expectancy? Infant mortality? Paid parental leave? Gun deaths? Incarceration rate? Income equality? Voter participation? Child poverty?

By any of these measures US falls far behind Europe

Re:One Month Without AI on Saturday September 26, 2026 @07:44AM (#49855611)
It’s not just coding that’s affected by the skill degradation issue. As a sysadmin and jack of all trades IT engineer over reliance on AI has unsurprisingly led to a serious knowledge dip.

I see great engineers troubleshoot everything by pasting logs into the prompt and blindly accepting the answer. Zero added value while they ctrl-c ctrl-v themselves out of a job.

Re:Dropbox's Jan 1st 2027 terms of service on Sunday September 20, 2026 @03:32AM (#49773404)
Long time Dropbox user here. I would disagree. In my opinion they still have the best file sync platform of the big providers, easily beating onedrive and Google drive for reliability, especially with hundreds of thousands of files.
Re:Claude Cowork and chat are now one Claude on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @01:10PM (#49729983)
Most normal users have no idea whether to choose chat or cowork. This makes sense for 95% of customers.
Re:I resigned from Anthropic today on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @11:03PM (#49620335)
If two airplane manufacturers were found to have massive safety issues which nearly led to enormous fatalities (but no one actually died), would you be calling for them to ground their aircraft until safety was made the number one priority?
But why?
I’m convinced one of the best ways is to make the right choices financially easier, and make the wrong ones (much) more expensive. Fully subsidise trains and tax the crap out of flying. Do the same for cars running on fossil fuels Tax carbon heavy foods like meat. Repeat until this starts changing consumer behaviour
Re:Creating a Personalised Bin Calendar on Thursday July 02, 2026 @08:45AM (#48760657)
The Dutch have a brilliant app for this which works nationwide - Afvalwijzer (Waste guide).

Complete with notifications when you want them and automatic updates when pickup are changed due to holidays/disruptions

Re:Is America Becoming a Gerontocracy? on Saturday June 27, 2026 @04:38AM (#48696336)
America may be become a gerontocracy but it’s far more likely to be a plutocracy first and that will cause more long term harm. Old people die eventually, but the ultra rich keep it in the family.
Re:The Flat Curve Society on Monday June 22, 2026 @12:53AM (#48625850)
I find it very interesting to read blogs like this which describe and predict the societal impact of AI. However, this impact is all framed in terms of developers. In the end this is a niche (albeit an important one) use of AI. I don’t believe for a moment that software development will be the primary use of LLMs that changes society, at least not in the long term.
Re:Hacker News but for Independent Blogs on Wednesday June 17, 2026 @07:09AM (#48568658)
Exactly. This is a design choice and there’s no right or wrong here.
Re:Codex for Open Source on Sunday June 14, 2026 @05:38AM (#48525649)
Is it possible this is vapour marketing and no projects are actually being selected? Perhaps someone from a project who has heard back can respond here?
Re:The Dead Economy Theory on Saturday May 30, 2026 @03:04PM (#48339600)
It’s great this debate is happening. The people on hn are some of those that can make a real impact here. There are many parallels with the industrial revolution here but we really don’t want to repeat a over a century of misery that occurred after that era. If we don’t want the world to be run be a tiny group of trillionaires, some action needs to be taken now
I disagree. No one will want to use second rate models when the frontier models reach a specific level of capability. Enterprise will keep paying.
Considering the economic angle, one possible long term future is that access to frontier models is only realistic for the wealthiest 1% They will use this access to the ultra intelligent models to increase their wealth further. Inequality will continue to be negatively impacted
Re:Googlebook on Tuesday May 12, 2026 @05:12PM (#48114670)
I’m sorry but I’m not buying this argument. This problem was solved in 2005 with search engines.
Re:Teaching Claude Why on Saturday May 09, 2026 @02:26AM (#48072379)
You’re quite correct and we are likely going to stumble into this future despite all the very big brains working on these technologies (including people on hn).

“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it.”

The credit card companies really missed the boat here to become the standard for consumer to consumer payments. Of course, from their perspective, they know that people would not accept having to pay for this service so the companies won’t go near it.
