I was in Copenhagen last week and spoke to a dozen people who all agreed that the housing market there is terrible aswell.
Re:Ask HN: How can I learn macroeconomics properly? on Tuesday May 03, 2022 @08:19AM (#31247369)
I personally _love_ Thomas Sowell's work. Basic Economics would be a great start, especially now with the current housing crisis. Very amusing and interesting read aswell.

He's got quite a few (albeit politically tinted) interviews with the Hoover Foundation on Youtube.

Just curious, did you see it in a proper cinema or at home?
Re:How Zillow's homebuying scheme lost $881M on Friday March 18, 2022 @01:41PM (#30725201)
Good point, never thought about that. Here in the Netherlands, it used to be "common" to house other people than your direct family for some time, e.g. during harvest season.
Hey man, if you're really suicidal, please get help.

Aside from that I can personally recommend exercise, d3, sunlight and a regular bed time.

Know that depression makes everything suck, you wont enjoy things you used to. Even if your life was great you wouldnt enjoy it. But you will again once you get over the chemical imbalances in your brain. I'm rooting for you.

And that is totally fine and 100% the intent of that slide. You and Netflix don't match in terms of expectations. Id give kudos to netflix for being up front about it.
This is also happening in the Netherlands.

Not a fan personally...

Gasoline cars already pay tax per mile, as gas is very heavily taxed. Electric cars do too, as electricity is also taxed pretty heavily. (Notice a trend yet?)

The only advantage is that there can be a more fine grained taxation of cars, based on time and location. But I don't trust my government with that kind of data.

Re:Earth-like planet spotted orbiting Sun’s closest star on Friday February 11, 2022 @08:42AM (#30301348)
I will start off by saying I have very little knowledge of physics or astronomy, but reading comments like these feels like I'm watching a 13th century British sailor confidently state what's on the other side of the Atlantic ocean...

Do we really know enough to be able to say if a planet is habitable? Or could there be other forms of life that we don't know of yet... We have only recently put a man on the moon, and now we're saying we would be able to detect dyson spheres...?

>If your “opinion” is contrary to observable facts

I'm sure that is the same reason why many once people believed the earth was flat, or that the earth was at the center of the universe.

It's very arrogant to think that "the science" and "the facts" are always right. Any scientist worth their money understands the importance of challenging the status quo. Unfortunately nowadays, especially on the topic of COVID, challenging the status quo is enough to be considered a pariah by narrow-minded people like yourself.

Roughly, for every extra percentage of interest, your maximum mortage becomes 15% lower.

Cant imagine real estate not taking a hit when yields go up...
>If you are then asked for a Mobile App on top of that I would just deploy Vue as a PWA, unless you need specific native features
>He is claiming to be what he is not

Yes, you are indeed. Here online talking about subjects you probably don't know so much about as an MD or medical PHD of any kind or quality.

Even you talking about the subject is totally fine to me. But here you are telling OTHER qualified people not to do the same?

The level of hypocrisy is mind boggling.

So what degrees do you possess?
And what degrees do you posess that you can say he shouldnt even be able to talk about the subject?

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-02483-w maybe you will find this article about Malone interesting.

A sad day for the freedom of speech , when highly qualified phds and medical doctors are not allowed to challenge "the" science.

Re:The complicated futility of WordPress on Wednesday February 02, 2022 @05:37AM (#30175906)
>Wordpress atm is the quickest way to whip up a website for any objective needed.

Bullshit.

Static HTML template + Azure Static Web App/Netlify/... is definitively faster and cheaper to setup.

I am a developer who runs multiple wordpress sites for small businesses.

Maybe consider working 32hours and project on friday?
Re:It’s great to be a consultant on Tuesday January 18, 2022 @07:52AM (#29978269)
What I love the most about being in a consultance-esque role:

-Networking. I talk to more people daily than my CS colleagues do in a week. -I still have time to program in the evening. A lot of work I do is kind of "shallow", talking about tech instead of making it. At 6PM my brain is still capable of a few hours of programming. When I get maybe get a good 4, 5 hours of coding out of my brain per day. I used to use these ours at my job, now I use these hours building my own thing with a few friends

Re:Why isn't there a universal data format for résumés? on Monday January 17, 2022 @02:34AM (#29964246)
Coming from someone who cant spell "tough luck". Lol
Scumbag politicians here in the Netherlands are actually using Signal to avoid courts obtain their communications through the Dutch equivalent of the FOIA.

Politics here is starting to look more like mob politics... Our prime minister is actually known to do as little on paper as possible - so when the shit hits the fan, he'll always say "oh I didn't know" or "I didn't remember"...

Re:Colors in movies and TV: What happened to them? on Thursday January 13, 2022 @09:23AM (#29921006)
>show large-scale action

There are many large panning/sweeping shots in this series, such as when the ents attack Isengard, orcs besiege Helms Deep, when the fellowship runs through Moria...

Sure there are some quick cuts happening in some swordfighting scenes. And I agree it could have been better if these scenes were shot in a different format.

Is that authentication watertight and if not, who will make sure that I can obtain a new password if I forget or lose the old one?

Re: on Sunday January 02, 2022 @03:58PM (#29773800)
I noticed the same thing... Googled the term yesterday, was notitified by google that "these search results are changing quickly". Then went on Bing and DuckDuckGo and found actual relevant results.

Surprisingly the first video result in Google is a youtube video with little views.

Smells fishy.

>My utopian hope for the future is that we start sending rigs in orbit close to the sun

... Thats your utopia? How about we figure out a way to store/transfer wealth which doesnt need to perform arbitrary calculations and cause massive power consumption

Love that last sentence!
Wow so easy, only 9 different services. Then there's the underlying OS, managing hardware & network setup. Also need to make sure your network provider actually allows you to host (commercially?) in your own home. And ensuring that you have a static ip address for your server.

So easy :')
