Re:Quitting jobs: The two-week notice is dying. Maybe it should on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @12:46AM (#50348534)
It's wrong not to mention that many employers offer severance pay. (When not firing for cause.) The only time I ever got laid off I got 6 months of pay and health insurance. That's better than average, but I think 2 weeks of pay is the standard minimum. Even if the employees are sent home right away.
It's not cool that they successfully made themselves a rent seeker on PC game installation because gamers below a certain age didn't want to learn how to click on setup.exe. We needlessly gifted them a closed platform where it had previously been open in a way that Playstation (for example) is not.
Re:SUSE to cut one in ten employees because of AI on Monday November 02, 2026 @12:18PM (#50340115)
Invention's primary purpose is to replace human labor. It's explicitly stated by first party as reason for reduction of labor. Comments: "It would be interesting to learn if this has anything to do with AI."

How many different accounts do you need to make to spam this from?
"Immigants! I knew it was them! Even when it was the bears, I knew it was them!"
Perhaps they believe that the flow of physical goods is a positive thing while the flow of slop is not.
Re:Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power on Sunday November 01, 2026 @12:51PM (#50327880)
Imagine this was an issue you were neutral on and someone proposed to you that culture is somehow isolated in a bubble, not interrelated with the rest of society. You'd laugh off that idea immediately. You'd go to bed still thinking about the guy who, faced with an idea he didn't like, pretended that culture in general should go away.
The LLM era would deserve more optimism if it wasn't enabling the worst and dumbest people.
Re:Shiny Object Syndrome on Saturday October 31, 2026 @11:49AM (#50317272)
It's the Eternal September of open source software projects.
A few years ago I saw a post somewhere captioned, "I think we know who the better captain is now". And I don't remember the details but it showed a picture of Patrick Stewart and a statement he'd made that was incredibly compassionate. Next to it was a picture of William Shatner and an old man "get off my lawn" type quote of his from some antiwoke rant.
Bodies are all different. Diet and exercise can work for one person and not another. But the type of person who wants to believe all fat people are slothful, all unemployed people are lazy, and so on, will invent in bad faith the straw man argument that we think diet and exercise do not work at all. They're not worth engaging with.
AI has electrolytes!
Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Thursday October 29, 2026 @06:58PM (#50297435)
I keep my money with traditional boring financial institutions instead of tech startup clowns so it's been very easy not to get hacked.
Re:I Built the Most AI-Pilled Company in the World on Thursday October 29, 2026 @02:45PM (#50293952)
There are so many lessons from the past 20 years of internet that people have no excuse not to have learned, that they have apparently not learned.
Re:Zombie stats: Where the numbers AI quotes come from on Thursday October 29, 2026 @12:22PM (#50291586)
Being skeptical/critical isn't a skill, it's an attitude, a state of mind. An education that requires you to find your own information and sources manually breeds that state of mind. Giving LLMs to kids (or even adults) nurtures the opposite. It's like taking them to McDonald's every day and telling them to eat healthy. Yes there's a salad on the menu, but it's rarely going to be chosen.

Of course the reality that adults do trust AI uncritically because it's the path of least resistance means the traditional education I mentioned above wasn't sufficient. But that's all the more reason not to introduce a variable that makes things worse.

They're using our data to create AI products that they sell to whales who subsidize our usage. Whether that's long term viable, I don't know.
Re:Valve Responds to Developers Fearing AI Slop and Clones on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @10:44AM (#50274509)
It seemed to me like they're hedging until they know which side is more profitable to support. We don't know yet if slop will be widely embraced by consumers. Valve will be happy to profit from AI if it takes over from real developers.
You can openly be a white supremacist on Twitter now. The reason some people still aren't happy is because what they really want is to be able to have terrible opinions and not be disliked and shunned, which isn't possible. Social repercussions and censorship are different things.
You're allowed to think something is bad. We do not and cannot live without rules, we need to stop acting like every issue that nudges back and forth the line of where those rules start and end is the difference between absolute anarchy and tyrrany.
Vague takes like this scream Facebook boomer. There's lots of great media and lots of bad media. It's the nature of trying to monetize creativity.
> David Merritt, a Blue Cross Blue Shield vice president focused on federal policy, said patients, too, tend to have few options to avoid the fees. “There certainly is no federal protection or even state protection as far as I know,” Merritt said.

Insurance companies are often portrayed as evil, and maybe that's accurate, but we often overlook that sometimes their interests are simply aligned with ours. This practice hurts them, too. Another example is the Covid vaccine, my insurance still covers it. They don't have the luxury of engaging in culture war nonsense. It costs them money if I get hospitalized with Covid symptoms. For their own bottom line, they're not incentivized to use RFK as cover for denying vaccines.

Unfortunately, people are going to get the future they deserve.
Re:Shitter – A Nitter Fork on Friday October 23, 2026 @10:24AM (#50209596)
For someone who's been on Twitter for a long time, these alternatives function as a good off-ramp that's easier than quitting entirely and abruptly. I deleted my account a few years ago knowing I'd still be able to see some of the content without viewing their ads or contributing my own content.
Broadly writing off the opinions of people who don't share your views is the height of incuriosity.
Re:Every AI model has the same "controversial" take on humans on Thursday October 22, 2026 @06:55PM (#50202232)
Maybe it's similar to why I'm attracted to women but I'm not attracted to mannequins.
Re:Show HN: Run full iOS 16.5 firmware on Android Devices on Thursday October 22, 2026 @12:26PM (#50197579)
Was your prior feeling about AI based on the sum total of its negative externalities for society, or its not having produced enough gimmick software projects?
Re:Airbnb bans making guests do dishes and take out the trash on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @09:45PM (#50190110)
The only way I ever saw a savings was by getting a lesser experience in terms of location, amenities, privacy, predictability, etc.
Re:Airbnb bans making guests do dishes and take out the trash on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @09:07PM (#50189837)
You went by a "vibe" they wanted you to believe instead of the fact that you pay hotel rates to stay at these houses?
Re:Facebook now charging to post more than 2 links a month on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @12:34PM (#50168957)
It's a shame that Musk's politics are a distraction from the ways that Twitter has become hostile and worse for non-political reasons. That was the first place I became aware of hyperlinks causing posts to get hidden or downranked.
This is very standard and innocuous. This instance only stands to you because it makes you uncomfortable. Own up to the specific reason for that instead of acting like the existence of "politics" in a general sense is somehow evil.
