Re:Ask HN: How/when/where do you work best? on Thursday May 21, 2015 @10:04AM (#9582790)
It depends on what I am doing. I prefer working at night between 10pm and 3am. This is the most quiet and solitary part of my day. Of course there are tradeoffs for fatigue but beer tends to make it all better. You have to try different things to find out what works for you. It just takes time.
Re:Ask HN: What tools do you use for development? on Friday March 13, 2015 @01:54PM (#9198592)
I am primarily a .net developer so my tools are Microsoft related except for front end development. I use webstorm, grunt/bower/yeoman and npm for front end development. For .net and sql I use sql data management studio, visual studio 2010 and 2012 with resharper. Check out jetbrains products. Tehy probably have something that can help you with C++
Re:Ask HN: How do I figure out the JSON challenge? on Friday April 25, 2014 @11:34AM (#7647114)
Did you write some code that makes a get request to that url? I think a simple page with a jquery get or xmlhttprequest etc should get you started.

Re:Ask HN: Review my startup: JobKaster Google Maps for Jobs on Wednesday April 09, 2014 @09:49AM (#7559220)
Quite frankly this falls under the great category of "why didn't I think of that". I like this idea and the website is beautiful. Please make with the mobile app that automatically provides directions to the job you applied for on the website. Well done you guys.
Re:Ask HN: What was your first computer? on Tuesday February 11, 2014 @12:43PM (#7218923)
I had an Apple IIe(2e).
Re:Ask HN: What is the must have feature of your IDE on Wednesday January 08, 2014 @08:46AM (#7023386)
Must have features for me are code completion "intellisense" to borrow a term. Proper and diverse syntax highlighting, Function/Method signature helpers, code/file navigation, and a clearly defined layout of the interface. Additionally, the IDE should have a clearly defined purpose and all utilities and support functions should reflect this. SOme good examples IMO are visual studio, and jetbrains IDEs of which I primarily use webstorm
Re:Ask HN: How to spend $90 on software on Tuesday August 20, 2013 @08:51PM (#6247544)
One website immediately comes to mind. Jetbrains.com It depends on what you want but for $90 i have found much that is useful there.
Re:Ask HN: How do I get into programming? on Monday June 17, 2013 @03:01PM (#5895186)
This quote right here, "Create some kind of website or tool or project that people can see, use, and get a feel for your abilities" - throwaway420, will serve you well.

This is called the never ending or perpetual side project. It represents your capability at any given time if you keep it current. Add new technologies to it. Make new versions of it all of the time. I have personally had interviews succeed on the strength of this project alone, based on my ability to talk about its structure.

Build any project for anyone who will let you(any brochure website is great), using the skillset you wish to develop. If all else fails, build some apps for android or ios. All the challenges of real programming(because it is) with the potential for some actual side money(just a bonus, not the reason to do it).

Finally, it takes time and perseverance. Persevere in the path towards gaining and being able to demonstrate practical and conceptual knowledge. Giving up is the quickest route to failure.

You are not the only designer who prefers pen and paper. While I am more of a programmer than anything else, I know my way around photoshop. I am also a fair hack with a pen(customavatars.reddempire.com), and prefer a pen and paper when starting a sketch rather than drawing with a tablet for example.
Re:Ask HN: Does this curation tool exist? on Monday June 10, 2013 @10:48AM (#5854748)
I haven't written the bookmarklet and the site is going through a redesign to use an API but what you just mentioned is my bookmark manager that doesnt require you to be registered or logged in to explore it. It is called Mark my place and it is located at www.markmyplace.com. If you begin to use it I will take into account any changes you want for the redesign. The redesign is supposed to shift everything to the website's front page, and be completely driven by AJAX but if you look at it you can see the potential. It would be nice to have a user to develop for who wasn't just me. Thanks for your time.
My love for programming is due to an insatiable desire to learn and synthesize knowledge into new forms, to apply concepts across different domains, and to generate interesting things with a computer. Being paid for it is a necessary incidental.
Re:Finding a startup partner on Monday May 20, 2013 @11:40AM (#5738197)
I am interested. I also have a small hobby project that I am working on. I don't want to call it a start up yet. I would like to take part in this.
Re:Is Larry Page really Darth Vader? on Wednesday May 15, 2013 @03:33PM (#5714243)
While the OP may be making a joke, it is indeed in poor taste to actually make this joke given his revelation of his condition. Sometimes you just don't need to make the joke out loud.
www.markmyplace.com - I wrote this as an exercise to teach myself how to build an application from start to finish. This is the third iteration, and while a bit crude, it contains all of the resources I have found while learning programming and related topics. It also has a good deal of the random things in it that interest me. If it is related to programming and was useful to me in some way it is probably in there. Hit the tags and find some stuff. Any suggestions to improve it would be great too.
Re:Are javascript frameworks suitable for content websites on Thursday April 25, 2013 @10:12AM (#5607251)
I think you might be asking a question that is not relevant to the subject matter. IMHO the answer to your question is yes, because the technologies can be used to create content heavy sites. What is also needed however, is some form of content creation/management system which can be created with a JavaScript framework as a component. So yes, you can, but it won't be quite that simple.

For example, sammy.js can be used for navigation, and knockout.js for data binding, but this sort of system would need to be carefully thought out and structured. There are many content management features that would need to be added that wouldn't come from the class of frameworks that I mentioned. Hopefully this answer is helpful and I would be glad to answer any further questions.

Re:One editor/IDE or multiple? on Tuesday April 23, 2013 @03:03PM (#5597244)
IMHO the reason not to worry about being crippled by moving around too much is that this is about completing the task. In most cases they will add more, and to top it all off, if you learn a few key "most useful" shortcuts/features of the IDEs you end up using, then you strike what I call an acceptable middle ground.
Re:One editor/IDE or multiple? on Tuesday April 23, 2013 @02:48PM (#5597151)
My setup is influenced by my primary language which happens to be c#. This tends to dictate visual studio but to answer your question, I also use webstorm and sublime text. In short I use, and like to use, IDEs with code completion. In addition, I maintain resharper for all of my visual studio versions. Multiple IDEs seem to enhance productivity so I am willing to use whatever IDE helps me be a faster programmer.
This is why i haven't really gotten into it. Getting noticed is quite difficult with all of the noise. Folks interested in this should form some kind of collective/conglomerate etc.
I have been trying to answer this question myself. FWIW, I would like to officially throw my hat into the ring as an addition to the network of folks you could use to deliver sites more quickly. I have a full stack development setup (all tools to do database to front end and all in between). I specialize in asp.net/sql server, but I am a fair hack with all the shiny new framework madness.
Re:Becoming an expert 30+ on Friday April 05, 2013 @10:24AM (#5498585)
Age has no bearing on expertise. The easiest way to become an expert is to practice. The best way to enjoy what you are practicing is to do it because you want to. Now, you just have to spend an obsessive amount of time. Someone will invariably ask you a question which, depending on where you are in your obsessive amount of time, you will be able to answer. Welcome to being an expert, level 1. Keep going, for as long as you like, answering questions as you go. The more good answers you give the more expertise you are displaying. Don't worry, you will get some questions wrong. Study, implement, read, learn, repeat. Like I said, Age has no bearing on expertise. Just dedication and passion(/facepalm) .
Re:Multi-level-of-detail IDE on Wednesday March 20, 2013 @09:16AM (#5407006)
I like this idea but you would be up against established players like Jetbrains with the resharper add-in. Your user experience would have to be seemless and intuitive. Now, that said, this interests me. So if you start this as a project I would like to contribute.
Re:I created this startup in my lunch break on Tuesday March 19, 2013 @03:26PM (#5403008)
Since work has it blocked, what is it?
Having asked this same exact question before my answers, as some have mentioned below, are RaphaelJs and JqPlot. That said I am also looking into D3 which is also mentioned below. RaphaelJs has a number of controls based on it such as JustGage animated gauges(not by me but I have used it), and JqPlot which is highly configurable and seems to "just work".
Re:Real-time dashboard for mobile devices on Thursday March 14, 2013 @10:40AM (#5375226)
Does this exist already as a service for websites? Because if I could access an API that did this for my website I would like to try it out. I have a situation right now where hooking something like this up would be useful to know if I have had hits especially if this was an android app(Xoom user).
Re:As being designer when to say, no more changes plz.. on Tuesday March 05, 2013 @10:12AM (#5324843)
I actually have a number of revisions built into the contract that they sign. Once those revisions are used up that means the work is complete and further changes cost more. Obviously you have to use your own judgement sometimes but this usually prevents frivolity.
Re:Task management software on Wednesday February 06, 2013 @03:26PM (#5178584)
I have one word for you. Trello. Supporting details include "it just works" and "It is free". Seriously check that out.
I am highly interested in the answer to this. I am tired of learning news things just to learn them. I want to be able to the use the stuff i learn to build something that is actually useful and interesting, and not just another app/website in some already crowded space. I have built a few apps that I use personally but they are not things i feel anyone would pay for. They mostly solve my particular requirements for an already solved problem. I would love to find an answer to this question.
Re:Ask HN: How do you find time for pet projects? on Monday October 22, 2012 @10:41AM (#4683329)
You have asked the question that I ask myself everyday. I even went so far as to start my own business. The answer to this question for me is as follows. I try to have time in the evenings after my child is in bed. I generally will see if my wife needs anything or would like to spend time with me. If not then I will go to my office and program/tinker for a while. This is a variable process and sometimes I cannot get to my office. It is all about balance. You cant neglect your family.
Re:Adobe to open-source Photoshop Q1 2013 on Wednesday August 22, 2012 @12:02PM (#4418006)
Please do not play with my emotions like this. I don't see anything about Photoshop in that press release.
