I stopped reading after "Ask them on X", but contribution by MCP just compounds on the issue.
Re:Why a 'Boring' Life Might Be the Happiest One on Monday October 20, 2025 @02:30PM (#45647398)
I loved this movie, and I appreciate the overall premise of the letter -- simplicity can be freeing, because it allows you time to breathe and discover what really fulfills you. That said, I will never have just 3 hobbies. That's not who I am. I did, through the clarity of the pandemic, learn that there is more to life than money and climbing the career ladder. I don't know that I would have learned that without that time to be alone with my own self trying to find ways to be fulfilled in a time where my job at the time wholeheartedly sucked.
I came here to ask the same question. Honestly, I was hoping for proper encryption. That's the only feature Day One does not have that I want so very badly. I have no desire to upload my secrets to your server. No offense, but that's just irresponsible for a private journal.
Re:Matrix director Lana Wachowski reveals painful past on Thursday October 25, 2012 @02:28PM (#4698815)
Saw this yesterday, and was truly moved. There's just so much hope in her voice; in her life. I can only endeavor to experience that kind of unconditional love and support in mine.
Re:Why it's OK to leave a tech job at 5 p.m. on Monday April 16, 2012 @04:19PM (#3849193)
I do this, and occasionally I catch flak for it. I put in 8 hours, and that 8 hours happens to be fantastic -- regardless of how busy I look, what I work on, or who I work with. The problem is that casual observers don't see that. They only see the present.

Thankfully, my efforts were noticed despite my lack of unpaid overtime. I've been promoted twice in the past three years, added to special panels and events, and even been given assignments that just rock.

There is this stigma around working 40 hours a week, and only 40 hours, that I will never understand. If you don't need more 40 (or even less) to do your job, what does it matter? The employer is getting what they asked for, and often times more, and you're getting a paycheck. Its called ROWE: results oriented work environment. Just a shame it hasn't caught on in the US.

Re:Pebble E-Paper Watch Raises $1M In 28 Hours on Thursday April 12, 2012 @03:53PM (#3833907)
I just picked up the TI EZ430 dev kit, and then this hits the web. I tried for days not to back it, and then it hits HN. Oops. There goes the money, and my pride. ;) Hopefully its as awesome as it looks!
Re:Twitter sentiment analysis using Python and NLTK on Thursday March 15, 2012 @12:10PM (#3709061)
Sounds like what tawlk does. Wonder if their training data/method is better, though.
Re:An Open Letter to Warby Parker on Thursday March 08, 2012 @03:30PM (#3681450)
Why do startups do this? I've seen this a few times over the past few years, and every time I find it loathsome. Dirty laundry isn't something you just go around airing because someone sent you a C&D letter. It could have been a mistake, it could have been a rogue legal team member, it could have been anything. Does it matter to the general public? No. Should it? No. This is between two businesses, and should have stayed that way. It makes both parties look very unprofessional -- and that's about all it achieves as far as I can tell.
Re:Show HN: A new way to consume the social web on Thursday December 15, 2011 @08:34AM (#3356021)
I had a chance to see the tech demos for Tawlk, as lrvick is a member of our local hackerspace, and I have to say I was blown away. This thing is amazing, and the way the infrastructure works is pretty sick too. Definitely worth saving the link and checking back when you have more time.
I, also, cannot edit the doc at the office. I agree with you 100%, the language and platform is not what the client needs to be concerned about -- its the features, business cases, and what they 'need'.

If this is one of those anti-Microsoft zealotry things, then I'm really disappointed. Their tool chain may be proprietary, but with things like NuGet and .NET MVC spawning from inside the belly of the beast, I can't vilify them one bit.

Re:Open Source All the Things on Thursday October 27, 2011 @04:57PM (#3165508)
You really have to admire these guys. They've managed to make money and give away everything they've designed at the same time. This is the critical mass I want OSHW to achieve, and we're seeing it happen more and more. I know a few folks who are getting ready to release OSHW versions of their hardware products soon and this just shows them that it can be done -- and their business can still stay afloat.
My assumption is that after Arrington was ousted, they went back to their old ways.

Kind of sad, really.

Re:Dropping out is probably not for you on Tuesday October 25, 2011 @09:58AM (#3154048)
I have to disagree. A college education costs about $26,000 for Florida residents here in Orlando for a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. Compare that to my first year's salary which was roughly double that, and the cost begins to look minimal.

The opportunity cost is relative, since the people you meet in college may very well be the best resources you have for maintaining your drive, innovative spirit, and will to keep on. Just the discipline of finishing something is worth the time and money spent. That said, it depends on _you_ and your situation.

Personally, I wouldn't be who I am today without suffering with my peers through classes like CS1, Discrete Structures, and Computer Architecture. My first piece of real consulting work, the first proposal I ever wrote, was for an ad on our local university's job board.

Disclaimer: The total cost of my education was paid by scholarships, so I do not have first hand knowledge of how this works, just providing my anecdote. $26,000 figure was calculated using my in state invoices from 2003-2007 so they may need adjusting for inflation.

Re:Apple blocks developer-registered devices on Friday October 21, 2011 @12:05PM (#3140381)
This smacks of silliness. People are using their development devices as their business and personal phones. This is called out in the developer agreement and every beta software agreement. Don't do that.
Re:Unity is the end of Ubuntu on Friday October 21, 2011 @09:35AM (#3139629)
Ubuntu was always about giving the every-man a usable operating system. Describing the typical new user as "a complete retard who can only click shiny buttons" is extremely rude and misguided. Not everyone is a terminal guru, and not everyone uses Ubuntu. If you don't like the distro, slipstream yourself a new copy with your favourite WM. I don't understand how anyone can complain about progress like this -- if you don't like convention over configuration, maybe Ubuntu isn't for you.
Loved that essay, and continue to cite it to coworkers who feel trapped in a schedule that makes no sense.
I'll just leave this here. :)

"I’ve gone back and forth on whether managers should code and my opinion is: don’t stop coding. Each week that passes where you don’t share the joy, despair, and discovery of software development is a week when you slowly forget what it means to be a software developer. Over time it means you’ll have a harder time talking to engineers because you’ll forget how they think and how they become bored."

Re:How I retired in 9 years on a corporate programmer salary on Monday October 17, 2011 @10:09AM (#3120517)
I think it was a post on HN awhile back that got me thinking like this. If I don't want to do it, and the opportunity cost for me is greater than the cost to hire someone else to do it, then I should just pay them. The key here is the opportunity cost is for me, not for anyone else. For example, I hate mowing the lawn and I estimate I'd have to be paid well over $100 to get me to "enjoy" doing it. Thus, I pay the $60 for lawn service. To me, I just earned $40 of my time back. Now, I'll admit, it isn't as cost effective as being cheap or "frugal", but I do think I enjoy life a bit more.
Re:Am I burnt out? Or just not suited for this job? on Tuesday October 04, 2011 @09:49AM (#3070854)
I wholeheartedly intend on starting my own company at some point, but I'm on my fourth year of salaried experience. Why? Because there is so much to learn from big corporations, problems to solve, and impact to make that you would never know about outside this walled garden. These problems can be solved, and big corporations will pay for the solutions. No need for freemium or non-existent business models here -- everyone wins.

Good for Ryan, this is a great way for him to monetize an already awesome service.
Re:Google+ Users Can Now Share & Follow Circles on Friday September 30, 2011 @10:05AM (#3057021)
Trust me, I noticed. I've been getting 10+ new followers every hour for the past week. Crazy. Need to find a way to keep S/N ratio up.

I'll just leave this here. Just replace the name Google with Facebook.

Re:Google Go: It just works. on Monday September 19, 2011 @03:42PM (#3014941)
Applying collective intelligence to news aggregators? Sounds like a start up idea to me. Go for it, I'll subscribe if it works.
Re:Ask HN: Should we be considering a HN 9/11 ban? on Thursday September 08, 2011 @01:59PM (#2974929)
Now see, I did what you did and was down voted into oblivion. I posed an insensitive question prefaced with a disclaimer. Instead of a polite answer, I got what you got, a bunch of trolls.
Re:Ask HN: Should we be considering a HN 9/11 ban? on Thursday September 08, 2011 @12:06PM (#2974434)
I can't believe anyone would post this, even with a disclaimer.

That said, what's your Meyer-Briggs? For my own personal research, not being snarky, I just have a hypothesis. :)

You have to remember what they pay for other technological services like Point of Sale and such -- Hint: it's a lot more than $19/month. ;)
Re:What Your Old Graphing Calculator Says About Technology on Wednesday August 24, 2011 @12:31PM (#2921346)
I still have my TI-83+ from my highschool days. Honestly, I couldn't survive without it. When I have to do hard core matrix algebra or graphing, and I need to be in front of my book, I can't use the PC or tablet -- it just doesn't fit in the zone. The physical nature of the calculator, the portability, and tactile feedback are all necessary.

Also, the TI-83+ takes a beating. ;)

Re:Heello is Twitter for Pretending on Thursday August 11, 2011 @04:07PM (#2874526)
I'm willing to bet Heello is TwitPic's backup plan. What I mean by that is, when you base your entire product on another platform, and that platform ceases to exist (or in this case, doesn't want to play nice with you anymore) you can do one of two things:

1. Shutdown

2. Rebuild the other service yourself and integrate your tool

If you invested real money into a product, which would you choose? Especially when the "other service" is basically a badly scaled, maxlen'd, asynchronous messaging service.

Interesting to see Amazon on that side of the fence. If they ask people to report on their own, it won't happen. As much as I hate the idea of taxes online, this makes sense -- collect what is already due.
Re:RepRap - 3d printer on Monday July 25, 2011 @03:07PM (#2804085)
Our hackerspace members have built a couple of these. They are very cool, but also require a lot of upkeep. Who knew that the current RAMPS firmware doesn't stop printing when the thermistor reports a bogus temperature.
