Haven't we always been questioning that? (Or at least, I thought lots of folks on HN were). There's always been conflict of interest when providers sell both a commodity and ways to use that commodity in a way that benefits the vendor.
You are right that I am privileged and perhaps the term "chastised" is a bit heavy handed. But the fact that it was mentioned at all, politely or not, is bizarre to me.
Empathy is important in a workforce but there's a difference between empathy and just policing language for no discernable reason. I think the reason you were downvoted wasn't the call to empathy but it was the insinuation that I somehow was not being empathetic in my comment, which perhaps I was not being empathetic but it seems irrelevant to the topic at hand.
And DOGE
The pedo-guy comment though I think was him being serious, unfortunately.
I thought the obvious next one would have been Boron then
As an aside, I once saw someone cite something somewhat profound and cited Rumi as the source, and I was like "hm that doesn't sound like him but maybe I'm just uncultured."
Turns out they were quoting Rumi from K Pop Demon Hunters and I indeed am uncultured.
Not always an option if you're being required to make a PowerPoint. The content doesn't need to be AI generated. Just the organization of slides is a PITA and not a good use of my time.
They may not be the real reasons but they're the reasons that were referred to by the organizers.
Personally I was not aware of that and I feel like something like that should have come up during the entire time he was being deplatformed.
But, was he referencing actual testicles or did he just use the term "balls" in a tongue in cheek manner (to mean like, chutzpah or something?)
That's wild! I wonder how far I could get at a place like that by saying random things trigger me, like "don't call it a sprint because I once tripped and broke a tooth while sprinting" or something like that. Make an entire organization change their jargon and use fun words like "this is our two week adventure!"
This is interesting. Two things can be true though. There may be a technical distinction between the two terms but I think many people (like me, until now!) don't know it, which means that many people do use it as a euphemism and not as its technical intention.
Yeah, tell that to my manager at the time!
IIRC "you" was also the formal second person pronoun (like usted in Spanish or vous in French).
I think it's all just normal evolution of language. I actually think it's kinda neat how different English-speaking subcultures found different ways to reintroduce the pronoun.
There's probably bias on my part. But I didn't cry about the criticism as the person I was replying to mentioned. Technically I abided by the criticism. I didn't agree, but I liked having the social capital with my employer more than I cared about how I felt about the policing. It's all just words in the end, I just thought it was nitpicky.
I think you're "supposed" to say "Latin-Ecks" (as in pronounce the X) but yeah it's fun to say Latinx because it sorta signals what you think about it while still technically complying.
Maybe I'm just lucky but I have a few gen Z coworkers and they are probably more often than not the voice of reason in our org (start up with 8 engineers). I think if an employee can't handle simple constructive criticism or clarifications maybe they should not be employed.
I did used to work for a consulting firm about a decade ago, and I was leading a staff augmentation project with another company and I was once chastised for saying "hey guys" in a chat because there were women in the group. I was encouraged to use "y'all" but not wanting to sound like I was from the south, I just used "peeps" which was somehow okay.
I'm all for inclusive language but I thought that was a bridge too far.
This is true, both sides suck. I'd also like to add that the Trump administration is almost laughably, brazenly corrupt. Democrats at least try to hide their corruption for the most part.
It's not hard but it is annoying to update card numbers and payroll and stuff
Yeah for me the accelerator has been using LLMs to build engines, not apps. Build something that outlasts the LLM, or could even be trivially used by a local LLM.
I'm under no illusion that we'll have cheap LLM access for much longer so I'm hedging my bets.
It's a tool, I don't think tools like or dislike much of anything.
I considered it an absolute win when I submitted an LLM assisted PR that removed 30k LOC :)
> most work in corps is slowed down by executive decisions
I work in a startup and I find it to be the opposite. Management wants us to go really fast and engineering is like "well wait we should slow down because just because LLMs can write a bunch of code doesn't mean it can build a maintainable app"
That said, I know that our small engineering team can't build an entire business by ourselves. So some management is required. But as you said, getting stuff done quickly is stressful. And with LLMs we're expected to get a LOT of stuff done very quickly. Some colleagues have decided to go on quiet strike by submitting AI slop and citing "no time to review" to prove a point. I don't fault them, but I also know that me and someone else will have to clean up their messes at some point.
Lol. I think a disconnect that engineers often have with product people is that product people want it to be done now (right or not) and engineers want it to be done right, which obviously takes more time. But I think a good engineer knows how to get it 80% of the way there quickly, and knows which 20% is ok to sacrifice or take on as tech debt.
Alas I'm not one of those engineers, but I'm fortunate enough to work with some.
Business people already talk to LLMs, and people who know how to code hate it.
I haven't written single line of code since Dec but I've been putting a lot of focus into systems design and making sure I understand how all the pieces of our system work together even if I don't know how the individual parts work.
The amount of times I hear my (fairly technical, mind you!) boss say "why can't we do X, Claude says it's simple" is pretty baffling, and my coworkers and him will have hours long debates about it.
Well sure, making things illegal is better than letting things be illegal, but the current government gets away with a lot of illegal shit so the skepticism is warranted.
I think what people want is just tearing all of the cameras down. Law enforcement had their chance to prove flock cameras were good. They proved to be poor stewards for the technology. Now get them the fuck off our streets.
I loved this site. It had a reputation at my school for being a place for perverts to play pervert games, and certainly that's why I initially looked at it being a curious 10-year-old, but then I realized there's so much more to the site than just pervert games and it became my home for playing games and learning flash.
I think Albino blacksheep was also somewhere there as well.
yeah with the amount of jank there is on the web , it's pretty clear that a lot of developers don't know basic algorithms, even at big tech corps
I say half facetiously - have you tried writing a skill or rule to remember your setting as a workaround?
I actually don't like that it sometimes remembers the last model/effort i used. I should be able to set a default model/effort that is separate from the one off fable runs I use.
Google assistant is not that much better so I agree that siri is not make or break.
Its kinda silly that investors think this incredible technology (AI) is just chat... when its real utility is really doing invisible things (for better or for worse)
Android user here. Google Assistant with Gemini is almost close to useless. Before Google assistant had gemini i used to be able to do simple things like "remind me to do x in y minutes" or "turn lights off" or "remind me that the apt gate code is 1234"
Now most of that either is "i cant do that" or "sure, playing Ellie Gouldings Lights at 200%" (which admittedly was funny in hindsight, had it not woken my infant daughter up and caused a sleepless night)
Idk after Toy Story 3 where the cute cuddly bear was the bad guy, and after 5 nights at freddys, I no longer trust cuddly mascots.
I agree with your general point though.
English media also does this for crimes in their own countries, depending on the narrative they want to spin. Im sure other countries do too, but i dont watch news in foreign languages.
