News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

absurdo

If you don’t adhere to the guidelines we’ll send mean and angry emails to dang.
How many cuils are we talking about?
Another article where discussion is engineered. If the article is in any way provoking you to question it in any way and to go down those rabbit holes with preconceived talking points, it’s by design. It’s getting tiresome reading articles where comment sections write themselves.

Avoid.

No, just fun at parties.
Re:Shadow of a Doubt on Monday June 30, 2025 @02:03PM (#44426170)
It’s an article whose discussion points are engineered. It’s not in good faith, and it’s a more frequent problem with articles in general.
Re:Shadow of a Doubt on Monday June 30, 2025 @01:21PM (#44425761)
This is a bait article. Avoid.
Sounds like we are blaming the lads once again! Oh well.
Re:An Important New Study on Phones and Kids on Monday June 30, 2025 @12:24AM (#44419356)
I’ve commented on this topic recently, and go figure Haidt is brought up: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44402475

I’m of the opinion there’s very little (not nothing) wrong with social media, and a whole lot wrong with people. Kids are just seeing how fucked up humans are earlier than we did and they realize early on they’re trapped in this shitbox with us.

But yes, let’s blame class warfare and rampant corruption on social media. That’ll fix it, lads.

(Side note: fuck cal newport)

> She thinks she's in some kind of Truman show that she calls "the game". Since none of her friends or family are willing to admit to it, then we must be in on it.

She’s the most intelligent of the bunch for entertaining this possibility. The rest of you are fucking morons living day in day out without an iota of thought as to what you’re doing here.

It’s not schizophrenia or psychosis. It’s just denial and delusion by everyone around her.

Re:Addictions Are Being Engineered on Sunday June 29, 2025 @09:36AM (#44413037)
Empty comment from me but thank you for being more nuanced than most about what constitutes an addiction. It’s tiring to listen to the HN wringing in some performance of outrage of who can be the most offended yet least affected by the article.

(The moderator(s) are praised endlessly but have done a terrible job of steering the community. They’ve merely shut out voices that were the loudest and most disagreeable, a phyrric victory at best)

Please for the love of God don’t get a dog.

Recent related thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44223212

As expected a lot of the comments here are anecdotes. I’m assuming there exists a class of highly technical articles that get posted regularly that incite ancillary discussion, but no real contribution involving the article.

For me, I don’t like that this is about a mathematical model. I don’t want a mathematical model. I like the theory, and I think it’s interesting. I don’t need further digressions into a model. I want to see the real thing. Prove it, replicate it, codify it.

Re:The Death of the Middle-Class Musician on Saturday June 28, 2025 @11:17PM (#44410088)
That has been the case for a very, very long time. Classical music is basically one big orgy of wealthy people. Musicians born into families of musicians that were well off. Same goes for other artistic pursuits such as painters etc.

I found very little actual insight in this article. I think musicians have been struggling for decades and the parents have known for at least as long to tell their kids to get a degree regardless of their talents. Schools like Berklee are… questionable at best. Lots off nepo babies just taking a few years to fuck about, basically.

Maybe I missed it but which FPGA did they use for this? I’m interested in learning FPGAs but there doesn’t seem to be a lot of freewheel documentation or software out there, it’s mostly vendor locked. I’m spoiled by the availability of STM32, AT, TI, etc MCUs and how easy it is to kludge things together.
We should incorporate a checklist/Q&A into the comments section when these articles come up. The outrage is amusing at best and people tripping over themselves to excuse their embarrassment of their country is the most uninvolved and keyboard warrior sort of activism there is. Right up there with excusing themselves that they’re Jews. Really, you can do more if you care that much about it.

The Q&A is simple: If you’re going to be outraged about Israel for the 100th time, are you going to finally do something about it?

HN should provide a way to filter comments based on answer to the above.

> It's about scaring the world so that the world stops criticizing primarily israel.

You should back up this assertion with facts and evidence otherwise nobody will take it at face value and it will be categorized as drivel.

I’d like to see a proper study on this that can be replicated before I jump on this train. And I’m a supporter of Jonathan “the kids are not alright” Haidt but let’s not kid ourselves his work is questionable throughout.

It’s easy to dogpile. I’d like to see more proof, that’s all. “It’s obvious” doesn’t cut it for me. For one, we have major societal problems that are being exposed through these platforms, and the mere knowledge of the problem has a negative impact on the individual. Do we shut the platform down because it’s showing us things we don’t want to see, or do we fix the societal problem? And many others.

This theory about Edward Bernays and the lucky strike being some PR mastermind striked me as bullshit and still strikes me as bullshit. People have convinced themselves of how this one guy is behind it all because it’s an easy answer - that’s the bigger con.

Succinct description of HN. It’s a damn shame.

What’s the root of this anti-tourism movement/campaign? I understand AirBNB aspects, but what about the rest?
Re:"The Last of Us Part II" Seattle Locations Tour on Tuesday June 24, 2025 @12:23AM (#44362832)
I want the games I play to be an escapism. By proliferating them in media further it destroys that for me, because it’s now everywhere and no longer an escape. For many of us growing up, and in learning to code and build shit, escape from the “real world” was a cornerstone etched with bad experiences.

If you want to make a movie, make a movie. Don’t make a game and then make a movie about it and splatter posters and billboards all over about it.

Re:"The Last of Us Part II" Seattle Locations Tour on Monday June 23, 2025 @09:23PM (#44361980)
Awe shit.
Re:"The Last of Us Part II" Seattle Locations Tour on Monday June 23, 2025 @04:00PM (#44359459)
The commercialization and exploitation of this game made it basically unplayable for me. I’m hoping they won’t do the same with Uncharted since I’ve yet to play the last sequel.
As certain as forgotten about in a week’s time.
Re:Using an $8 smart outlet to avoid brainrot on Monday June 23, 2025 @11:44AM (#44356930)
I have reservations about adding YouTube as it’s got a massive amount of useful content; a little curation and it won’t show you any nonsense. Reddit is a mid-range, so I can understand it. It’s hard to separate the good and the bad there I suppose, especially if you’ve gotten into constantly checking for updates.

But I would almost certainly and without any qualms put HN on the default noallow list. The SNR and potential for learning things is atrocious to nonexistent most of the time - and you can find better sources than HN. No, I’m not joking unfortunately it’s just what the site has become over the years.

Any rare games that you remember that stood out?

> I don’t complain about advertisements at Costco because that would be insane. I complain about the advertisements on Youtube because they’re irrelevant and weird but somehow normalized.

Calling it like it is.

Ah good ol’ Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis. What an absolute time to be alive.
Re:YouTube's new anti-adblock measures on Friday June 20, 2025 @01:54PM (#44330164)
I was wondering when buffering was going to be a thing. I’ve been seeing it on YT and figured it’s the Adblock wars getting heated up.

The next step is to scrape the videos, strip the ads, store them on a torrent magnet and serve that instead. Yes it would have to be from a shady RU or CN or NK or IN site. I’m fine with that.
