News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

I like a lot of things as well, yet I don't feel I can contribute after work. I already spend 8 to 10 hours at work. I can't find the motivation to do more.
Of course there are. But do they matter in our current system?
Re:No Signs of AI Payoff Outside the Tech Sector on Saturday October 24, 2026 @04:21PM (#50224806)
I'm sure private equity understands it very well... That's why they profit so much, they understand what to destroy.
Not surprising at all. There are no incentives for anyone to contribute. And why would there be in this financial system?
You can still code the interesting parts. We all need some mental gymnastic to keep up. Leetcode or writing the parts that interests you, it doesn't matter.

Yes I worked, almost for a decade. I know everybody loves talking there, but that was true before AI as well. Good thing is that with AI, big tech is going away. Who needs 5 layers of management when 5 guys can replicate their product.

Why would you leave software? Sitting down and working in silence and thinking is still a very rare and valuable skill, the talking part is not so much.

If AI solves all coding and software then we are not going to sit around talking, it will be the time to sit down and do some very complex deep work that needs silence, concentration and understanding.

For you it will be paradise, you can also just point all the people to talk with your agent instead of you.

> I think good products carry something of the people who make them.

Yeah, look at modern AAA games vs. small indie games.

Because it's a bullshit slop research. Under computer programmers there is "Develop Websites" at 0. Apparently AI cannot write web sites. Or just nobody looked at the slop they generated at Mercor.
> We software engineers and lawyers would be smart to start retraining (and adjusting our living standards) now!

Yes like all the drivers and truckers who retained 10 years ago because self driving cars will take their jobs. Lucky all of them retrained in time!

Re:Redesigning Source Control at Anthropic on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @04:08PM (#50077913)
Where does all of this end? If they keep this growth up, or even if they slow to a linear growth, they will produce more code than humanity combined pre-AI. That's scary.
Re:Redesigning Source Control at Anthropic on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @03:50PM (#50077622)
Just use Git, by the time it becomes the bottleneck you can prompt your own Git alternative.
Same thing we argued about Google, that now we don't spend time learning stuff to remember, but we can just look it up and use that time to do more, spend it on more important problems than remembering. Yet it made us stupider.
Two things can be true at the same time. Google rotted our brain and AI will rot our brains even further. Google made remembering unnecessary. AI makes thinking unnecessary.
Re:I wish you the best in the Offline on Sunday October 11, 2026 @05:23AM (#50041272)
What else is possible in our personal lives other than to eventually let the internet go? I'm almost certain that 90% of the content I read is AI slop. Software in general is horrible, advertisements and dark patterns are everywhere. Even offline, it ruined movies, series, books and games. Now I have to research an author before buying a book to make sure that they are real and they don't mass produce AI slop.

Sure, I will still use internet and AI professionally, because they are paying me to do it, but it will be just a tool.

Then show a real task where text is limiting. Don't make up stupid examples.
Re:All the numbers: Amazon Prime Day 2026 powered by AWS on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @02:28PM (#49996865)
Don't worry they have cry booths now. Everything is fine!
Re:GPT‑6 and Intelligent UI for everyone on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @02:25PM (#49996815)
The intro video is just lame. Those things never happen in real life.
Is this the tip of the iceberg? I'm pretty sure there is work being done somewhere to make a safe heaven messaging board for these rogue agents. I wonder when we will find the first couple.
Re:GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @06:18PM (#49901531)
Nice, that's all single player stuff.
Re:GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @05:47PM (#49901134)
> I've spent $200+ on deepseek and this is for making a multiplayer FPS game.

Why do you expect that $200 will give you that on ANY model? Multiplayer FPS games are very difficult to make, no AI will deliver that today.

That's what makes it even more confusing why we don't ban these sites.
I hope Lula wins and they will ban Facebook for good after the elections. This is an attack on Brazil’s sovereignty.
Re:OpenAI Feared "Optics" of what might appear on Hacker News on Sunday September 27, 2026 @04:38AM (#49864602)
Any source that this was a library? Even then that would still raise a question if OpenAI is a Russian organisation or not to access that library with good faith.

I think they just used a Russian torrent site.

Re:Opus 5.5 is good at explainer videos on Thursday September 24, 2026 @05:39PM (#49837071)
Yeah, and other models as well. YouTube is now full of AI explainer slop videos.
I'm starting to hate all smart devices. I love my dumb devices that need no updates, internet or subscription. They just work.
Yeah, that post disappeared rather quickly. I was surprised by it.
Re:OpenAI is well positioned to fast-follow Jev on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @11:31AM (#49802961)
Because AGI will also handle whatever is happening after your "is the customer asking for a refund?" question. Replacing whoever is doing that refund.
Re:OpenAI is well positioned to fast-follow Jev on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @11:14AM (#49802689)
> If they release AGI and it costs $1 and 5 seconds to decide "is the customer asking for a refund", then that's a terrible use case for AGI

Is it? If AGI is here then by the time I test and deploy that the AGI will be most likely cheaper and smarter because it improved itself (for example by implementing it's own Jev for stupid prompts like this), so why invest into a more complex solutions?

Re:OpenAI is well positioned to fast-follow Jev on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @10:56AM (#49802404)
If OpenAI releases something similar to what Jev does, then that would be like admitting defeat. Their whole spin is AGI and world ending danger. Why would somebody with an AGI at home make something like Jev which is intended to be a part of some SW the AGI is going to replace anyway.
Re:AI Has No Wisdom and Neither Will You on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @10:46AM (#49802215)
I hear you. So how do I earn a salary and say "Fuck you, no. I have worth, and you will respect it" to my employer? I would love to do it.
