Re:Joe Hewitt on the iPad on Friday January 29, 2010 @12:39PM (#1086981)
I still think that for most office uses, a mouse is better than a touch screen. If I'm spending a lot of time entering data, a all-in-one touch screen device is miles behind a monitor at eye level several feet away, a good tactile keyboard flat on my desk, and a mouse a few inches away. Maybe I'm constrained by what I already know, but I can't picture a touch device being better.
Re:Google Granted Design Patent for Its Homepage on Wednesday September 02, 2009 @05:23PM (#801146)
I don't know if it is necessarily bad for them to do this. If they don't what is to stop someone else from filing a similar patent and suing them. It seems like this is the best way for them to protect themselves.

If, on the other hand, they start using this patent to sue others: that would be very bad indeed.

Re:How American Health Care Killed My Father on Thursday August 13, 2009 @01:21PM (#761242)
EVERYBODY will have health problems and use their health insurance. Very few people will have their house burn down and use their fire insurance. Therefore, there is a massive difference in price.

Re:How To Live (Comfortably) on $36 A Month For Food on Thursday July 30, 2009 @07:36PM (#733342)
I had a friend in college who went everywhere with two tupperware containers. When he was asked whether or not he wanted left overs he would feign a no, but as soon as he was asked a second time he would say "I guess so" and pull out his tupperware.
Re:Teens Don’t Twitter on Monday June 29, 2009 @01:21AM (#678545)
"An adult or a teen celebrity might twitter but most regular kids see what they are communicating as too private to share with anyone other than the person for whom it is intended, much less any old creep who chooses to subscribe."

That doesn't jive with me- just look at wall postings on facebook (I'm a youth worker, so I have 100+ teens on my friends list- it is amazing the details that they post for anyone, including old aunt Agnes, to read)

Re:Palm Pre Launch Guide Leaked [pdf] on Sunday May 24, 2009 @05:14PM (#624681)
My understanding is that it is not supposed to be a business phone. It is supposed to be a middle-of-the-road phone, excellent for both your business life (like a black berry) and personal life (like an iphone). So these being in the same breath makes perfect sense.
Re:The Imminent Death of the U.S. Postal Service? on Saturday April 18, 2009 @12:23PM (#568448)
With utilities, you pay based on how much you use, not on how difficult it is to get them to you. So, for example, if you live on a farm in the middle of nowhere, it is more expensive to give you power than if you live in the city (you need dedicated infrastructure to get the power to you, and chances are you are further away from the power plant which means more power gets lost in transmission). Yet you pay the same per kw/h as if you lived in the city. Where you start paying more is if you use more power. (at least, this is the case where I live. Sorry if it is different in the US)

Postage works exactly the same way. No matter how expensive it is to get a package to you, you pay a fixed rate for it. However, you also pay proportional to the cost you impose on the system is that you pay per package.

Re:Perfect German Board Game Redefines Genre on Friday March 27, 2009 @04:17PM (#535665)
I've played Catan with cards instead of dice- you have 36 cards, each with a number that can be attained by rolling two dice. How many times a number appears in the deck is its odds of being rolled. Statistically, you will roll 7 6/36 times, so there are 6 sevens in the deck. There is only one 2 and one 12 because their odds are 1/36. You shuffle the deck, and draw a card instead of rolling (once you go through the deck, you just reshuffle). This means that luck plays into when you will get a resource, but not if you will.
Re:Last.fm Radio will soon require a subscription on Wednesday March 25, 2009 @02:51PM (#532235)
I think it is presumptuous to assume that they new they would have to adopt this business model 7 years ago.
Re:Last.fm Radio will soon require a subscription on Tuesday March 24, 2009 @06:23PM (#530967)
If they are able to offer the service for free to some, why is this a bad thing again? I'm Canadian, so am a little bit sad that I won't be enjoying last.fm for free (or, in my case, at all) anymore. However, I'm not mad that others will be able to.

And why is it a bad thing if you offer your service for free at first?

But won't that fan base be expanded?

Re:A Better Way to Load a Plane on Sunday January 04, 2009 @07:58PM (#419788)
A sort of related anecdote: one time I was on a plane where there was some sort of medical emergency in the back, so we had to wait to let paramedics get on. Eventually they had the patient stabilized but needed to do more work before he could be moved, so they allowed the plane to be unloaded as long as the aisles could be cleared quickly if they needed to get through. In order to allow this, the crew only let one row at a time to stand up. I wish I would've timed how long it took, but it was definitely much shorter than the time it usually takes to get off when there is no organization.
Re:A Better Way to Load a Plane on Sunday January 04, 2009 @07:55PM (#419786)
Why? I intentionally get on the plane as late as I possibly can.

One of the key reasons that the wii and the Flip are so successful is because they appeal to other generations than the tech savvy ones.
The SantaMail is in the funny one to me. In Canada, if you mail a letter to Santa Claus, North Pole, H0H 0H0 then Canada Post employee volunteers send you a response in the guise of Santa. And the only cost to you is stationary and a stamp.

Re:Google may face antitrust challenge on Chrome on Friday September 05, 2008 @12:58PM (#296038)
But IIRC, windows/IE was different: how easy was it for the typical person to run a computer without windows as their operating system? Not very, unless they bought one brand of product (Apple). However, for every service google offers, there are multiple and easily accessible alternatives. With most ISPs, Google isn't even the default search engine out of the box.
Re:Google may face antitrust challenge on Chrome on Friday September 05, 2008 @01:14AM (#295590)
I don't see how they have a monopoly on the search engine market. It is definitely the most popular and probably the best search engine, but there is definitely no limit on other adequate alternatives. A monopoly occurs when a company controls a product or service significantly enough to significantly control the terms people must follow access it. Google hardly does this. Most people might choose them, but they don't need to in order to access a search engine. For example, if tomorrow Google decided to start charging a buck a search, 99.9% of their users would instantly switch search engines with very little ill effects.
But I love newspapers. I can't think of anything else that would make a more convenient and effective covering for the bottom of my bird's cage. And a supply that lasts me several months only costs a buck! Now that's what I call technology.
Re:Should the US drinking age be lowered to 18? on Wednesday August 20, 2008 @05:16PM (#282052)
No doubt that lowering the drinking age would increase access and alcohol consumption. I'm just saying that I would think it would raise these too dramatically.

I do think that the negative effects that driving drinking underground are greater than the effects that increasing drinking would have.

Re:Should the US drinking age be lowered to 18? on Tuesday August 19, 2008 @10:58PM (#281145)
The thing is that lowering the drinking age doesn't dramatically raise the availability of alcohol for 18-year-olds. I know that when I was underage, I had no problem getting booze. And I work with teenagers now: they still don't have problems getting booze. What the higher drinking age does do is drive the drinking underground. So 18-year-olds have to drive more so that they can drink at bush parties. Or when a friend gets alcohol poisoning, they are afraid to get help.

Also, I would say that 80+% of people have their first drink before they legally can. This means that their parents usually have no clue they are drinking, and so they are less able to give their children guidance.

Re:Should the US drinking age be lowered to 18? on Tuesday August 19, 2008 @10:54PM (#281142)
"For example, 18-year-olds from Ottawa, ON cross the border to Hull, QC"

I'd be interested to know how many MORE drunk drivers this puts on the road.

Re:Should the US drinking age be lowered to 18? on Tuesday August 19, 2008 @10:51PM (#281139)
But in the 80's, when this fall took place, MADD Canada wasn't around (it was formed in 1990) and driving laws were a lot more lax.
Re:Should the US drinking age be lowered to 18? on Tuesday August 19, 2008 @10:44PM (#281135)
I don't think they are really against Drinking and Driving. They are against Drinking. Period. And they are also largely about inflating their own reputation and salaries.
