Re:Emacs Turns 50 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @08:00PM (#50282667)
That's simply not true. Gosling wrote a commercial implementation, but Steele and Stallman wrote the first versions of Emacs.

I also strongly recommend agent-shell. I use it for all my work with Claude.

I always enjoy Rich Hickey's thoughtful and insightful talks.

Re:Emacs 31: An unofficial guide to Markdown-ts-mode on Thursday August 27, 2026 @11:15AM (#49466210)
I'm a huge fan of agent-shell, too. It keeps getting better and better, and it's infinitely customizable, like any good Emacs package.
Re:Why vibe code in Common Lisp? on Thursday August 13, 2026 @03:08AM (#49282637)
That used to be a problem, but Claude Code has been doing fine at it for a few months now.
Re:Why vibe code in Common Lisp? on Thursday August 13, 2026 @02:53AM (#49282536)
First, read the blog post more carefully. Then read the book Hackers, by Steven Levy. Common Lisp was designed by amazing hackers for amazing hackers. Joe was making a comparison with languages like Java, which has some nice characteristics, but whose designers have repeatedly stated that their goal was pragmatic utility for working developers rather than extreme language power. I'd rather use a language that gives me extreme power, and take the risks.

I've known Joe for decades. I've never heard him describe himself this way, but I can confirm that it is true. He is amazing.
Ambition is still a human characteristic.
I'm don't care. If it's good, it's good.
What an ambitious and impressive project! I'm going to try it.

One note: The home page says "Nothing phones home," but the Bento files I've examined include a cloudflareinsights.com beacon.

Eddie Murphy had a great comedy bit based on that car.
I don't understand this comment. They wrote SICP.
Sussman and Abelson are great at teaching.
Schools should forbid grading on a curve. MIT does, for example. Standards should be absolute.
Why is anyone using anything else?
“You may note however that the university has not issued any statement refuting the information reported in the press.”
Re:Iroh 1.0 on Monday June 15, 2026 @10:37PM (#48549854)
For a side project, I used Iroh to give my web server in the cloud the ability to print directly to my label printer at home. The API is simple and easy to use. It took no time to write a reliable system on top of Iroh.

So much work is done for HIPAA compliance, and then the only authentication required is a birth date.

If you're interested in efforts to catalog and even deflect asteroids that might hit Earth:

The ".ai" stands for "Asteroid Institute." It was started by two former astronauts, Ed Lu and Rusty Schweickart.

Actually, they do have an incentive to let you turn off ads. If they don't, many users will turn off notifications entirely. At least if they categorize them, some users will just turn off the bothersome ones.
Re:Byrne's Euclid on Saturday May 23, 2026 @10:44PM (#48253856)
I have the poster on my wall. It's beautiful. I highly recommend it.
I second your recommendation. I watched it last night, and loved it. It was beautiful to see the level of competence and devotion of the tiny group running the spacecraft.
Andy gave a nice talk on the implementation of Chez Scheme, an optimizing compiler, at the Scheme Workshop in Berlin in 2019:

Re:The Agent-Native Editor Was Invented in 1976 on Monday April 06, 2026 @06:08PM (#47667942)
Absolutely. I do all my LLM-assisted work inside Emacs using Agent Shell and Emacs skills:

Here's Pixie Scheme, which is an interesting implementation for the iPad:

This makes me nostalgic for my 4K TRS-80 Model I with cassette tape. There was something beautiful about having control over everything, and even the tight constraints were sometimes fun.
Re:Waymo 13x safer than human drivers on Friday March 20, 2026 @01:08AM (#47450737)
I love Waymo. Using the word "impact" is unfortunate.
