Re:Building an AI-native engineering org on Friday October 30, 2026 @04:59PM (#50310065)
If you build your platform well, then you can execute fast, but also safe.

I push "money and data are sacred"; if we lose either of those, someone cries. Build the platform slow and fast. Governance, scaling etc sits here.

Provide reference APIs and let the product team one shot whatever they want and need, build fast and experimental, but your platform enforces constraints.

Best of both worlds (though feels like we're back in backend vs frontend development)

Thanks for this.

Built this myself using Gemma4, but the branching is neat. Will have to try it.

If you're packing the questions into the branches, is there a chance that the ordering of the questions can change the probability of each output?

I see you have packs, but as close to deterministic as possible is what I'm after.

It's all moot soon:

Updates to your Google AI Plus plan

We wanted to let you know about changes to the models that you can access with your Google AI Plus plan.

Starting on 1 3 N o v e m b e r 2 0 2 6 , the ability to select Pro models in both the Gemini app and AI Mode in Google Search will only be available to Google AI Pro subscribers and above. You'll still have access to our latest Flash-Lite model and Flash, built for speed and intelligence. Your previous chats using the Pro model can be continued with a different model.

Re:The Mythical Man-Month in the Age of AI on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @04:53AM (#50256256)
Yeah, and then who maintains it?

Maintaining vibe coded software is going to become hours spent with Claude not your users.

That's going to be the difference. It takes nothing to rebuild the software, but listening to users, iterating, handling issues. That's boring.

The ones that win will be the ones that stay the course, not the ones that were built the quickest.

Re:The Mythical Man-Month in the Age of AI on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @04:50AM (#50256234)
If you've got 9 coders, you've at least got a business idea and some financial backing.

Get it out quickly, market it, iterate it. That hasn't changed. Just the speed of iteration before you go from product to product that sells.

Once you know what sells, then again, it takes far less time to rebuild it well if you need to.

Re:Why do we have so many meetings? on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @03:18AM (#50177158)
This may be small nuclear team vs sprawling org difference.

This process works so well in a team that are all pushing together.

Moving the ticket along and a slack to the effect of "this one is quick and easy" Vs "this one's a bit gnarly, happy to jump on it with someone" generally sees PRs reviewed very quickly.

A pleading cat gif is usually enough as a reminder.

A well oiled team is working to deliver customer value (internal or external). I've been lucky enough to have had a few teams of incredibly good engineers over the years. So much gets done.

I can see it not working so well in a team of "individuals" focused on their own performance and "personal responsibility" solely for their bit.

The kind of teams that throw everything over the wall to an individual making a build gate go/no-go decision perhaps.

Given they probably need to go through layers of management, across teams, and go through relevant testing to adjust the LLM prompt, this was probably a nice quick and flexible way to create a "shadow" prompt.
Re:Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @04:43PM (#50094921)
Is that not the epitome of the classic mid life crisis?

You hit a point in your life, reflect back on where you'd thought you'd be when you were in your early 20s, and think.. shit.. what I do all of this for?

This isn't even a flippant comment (especially given the subject matter); being at this age and thinking "I imagined it would all be easy by now" does hit home.

The obvious fork is "can frontier models stack a dishwasher to my wife's exacting standards".

I can't. So that would surely be proof of AGI.

They have trillions..

Lots of people would have happily taken GPT-4o as good enough for a lot of use cases a year ago and not lived to regret it.

Re:Mistral Large 4 on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @12:47PM (#49981007)
Interestingly if Google did release readily available video models then they'd likely be dealing with an order of magnitude of scale in the same way GitHub has had to.

Causing less content to be uploaded, when you are clearly the gorilla in the room, looks to be a wise strategy not a trade off.

Re:AI Makes Me Sad on Friday October 02, 2026 @12:02PM (#49935054)
The ease of building highlights the mental overhead of maintenance for me.

This is why SAAS is here to stay. Yes, I can one shot it, but then I've got to maintain it, and I want to get on and play with the next shiny thing!

Doing things for me, awesome, that works. Doing things that have an expectation from a third party, not so fun.

If you build something, sit with your users, listen, build community etc. I don't think that cheapens the final product.

The animation carries it, don't worry.

So many launches don't show what they are. This on the other hand - got it straight away from the animation.

Great job

How does that fit the YC W26?

You building something else and this scratches an itch?

That aside. I actually love this. Anything that helps with the "wtf did you just do?".

If I can still learn I will. If an agent can't reason about the changes made, then they are not good changes.

Yeah, as I understand it, natural language is tokenised and vectorised, and then maths takes ahold.

The model isn't limited to concepts that can be expressed in natural language.

It's only once the AI gets to the output layers that natural language comes back into play.

After all, they're all made out of weights[0].

Re:What Sun got wrong on Monday September 21, 2026 @04:03PM (#49792614)
I think you miss the point.

You price it at what you think works. There is no push back, so you make room to push the price higher.

You were happy to do it at the original price.

Re:AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible on Saturday September 19, 2026 @07:01AM (#49765449)
Context is everything.

A twee handwritten sign for free range eggs at the roadside is likely to do well.

A handwritten sign for flying lessons on the other hand..

Re:I resigned from Anthropic today on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @02:01AM (#49621742)
I was writing a long reply about how even meat bags have amassed enough money and power to rival elected governments. I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility to think an AI could do that.

Couple that with mass unemployment in an incredibly vast, diverse population of individuals with individual moral boundaries willing to do whatever for money.

And then.. figured that you must be aware because it's been explored constantly in sci-fi for many, many years.

Let's hope for the culture at least.

It's the bobiverse by Dennis E Taylor.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_E._Taylor

Similar boat - Panasonic glass fronted TV. Circa 2013. None of the smart works anymore.

1080p, but the picture far outstrips most other TVs I've owned to this day.

I have zero plans to change it, and it's usefulness has outlasted the Chromecast that's connected to it.

Yes, I put the first ads on Smart TVs. Apologies.

It's just a bunch of grapes.

If there's more than enough grapes for everyone and one person takes more than their fair share, then, on the whole, it's fine. There's enough to go round.

If everyone tries to take more than their fair share, then the whole system falls apart.

When there are this many people, and this much visibility of the hustle, just seeing others prosper by cheating means a not insubstantial number of people will be in the "well I want grapes, and likely need to cheat to make sure I get my fair share" camp.

Lol, I'm fully expecting in 6 months time:

"A bug in our portal had the setting for training inverted. This means that when you expected us not to be training on your data, we actually were. We know this adversely impacts the trust our users invested in us, so as of today we are crediting all affected accounts with $200 to use on our latest models".

Re:Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @04:24AM (#49533404)
Ironically, having never been flagged - I've just restarted Claude Desktop and it's flagged a conversation that has already been completed.

In a long session pulling data from all over the place it created a pretty PDF.

"create this as a google doc that can be commented on"

Done — the full v0.5 content is now a Google Doc in your Drive...

"Ah, the formatting has gone. Do it in google slides please"

The brand studio has a native Google Slides path for exactly this — building the deck now.

Google Slides created.

Then today:

Chat paused Edit and retry with Fable 5 Fable 5's safeguards flagged this message. This sometimes happens with safe, normal conversations. Continue with Opus 4.8, send feedback, or learn more.

Theory? Given they have now moved into "science" I'd say it's a given
The failing was the one and done nature of it all.

The vote should have been, should we entertain this idea?

If yes, a second referendum on what Leave actually means when it comes to the final decision point.

Y'know the same way that any remotely functioning democracy would approach something this large and nebulous.

Iceland being just the most recent example.

Instead the vote was "life carries on as is" vs "something changes", with no clarity of what that change is.

Given the state of the UK post austerity there is no surprise the vote for "I don't want more of this" was so high.

That's the incredible failing of the UK democratic process here, Cameron foremost.

Not to make everything about AI, but..

The current analogy I am using when vibe coding is it's like defragging a hard drive in terms of time wasted.

Years of sitting there as the bar crept closer to 99 in the vain hope I could turn the computer off and go to bed, just to have to sit there for another hour or so until finished.

So many late nights wasted doing, I'm not sure what.

And now I'm sat there waiting for the agent to come back..

Running for 17m.. "dealing with a complex response"..

Codex (GPT5.6) has me hooked on that loop moreso as it is, in practice, so much quicker than Claude (Opus or Fable), so I don't quite ever walk away.

Nostalgia.
