Re:Docz – It's never been easier to document your things on Saturday July 16, 2022 @06:27PM (#32122523)
How exactly does this help document things? Is this not just a static-site generator?
Re:World’s Highest Website on Tuesday July 05, 2022 @09:43AM (#31988108)
Or you could use the browser/windows(?) shortcut Ctrl+Home/Ctrl+End, or Ctrl+Up/Ctrl+Down. OR just use the 'take the elevator' link on the page itself.

> the easy fix is just to switch the websites you use to light mode.

The trouble is that `prefers-color-scheme` is set at browser or system level. In order for a website to use a different colour-scheme, then they need to add functionality with Javascript in order to be able to load different styling at user request.

I wish there were some URL-based rules you could set in the browser settings (I expect there are addons to do this, haven't looked though!).

Re:Folding bicycle small enough to fit in hand luggage on Wednesday March 23, 2022 @07:40AM (#30777420)
> is the lowest cost complete titanium bike on the market, folding or not.

Do you have sources to back that up?

In the UK, the price on your website lists it as £2,025 (or £3,003 for the higher-end model). I can get a PlanetX titanium gravel bike for £1,799 - granted it's not folding, but you specified "folding or not"!

Re:Yerka bike uses frame as lock on Monday March 07, 2022 @05:48AM (#30586263)
You're basically saying "don't own something nice if you don't want it stolen".

More needs to be done to tackle bike theft. Be that education, physical deterrants (cameras, good quality bike lockup locations, etc).

I've had a bike stolen, and the police can do nothing. A bicycle is small, easy to disassemble, relatively low-value, and they are untraceable items.

A car is higher-value, but more easily traced than a bike - due to a large number of factors; size, colour, shape, insurance/legal documents to prove ownership, ANPR cameras, etc.

> This is pathetic, predatory and should be illegal.

IANAL, but it sounds questionable around anti-trust laws. Certainly not the first time Microsoft have run into problems with their browsers[^1].

[^1] https://www.cnet.com/news/eu-resolves-microsoft-ie-antitrust...

I've been looking for this for some time. It's really useful to be able to easily find out which streaming service a film/TV-show is available on (or not on!).

Are you making any profit off of this, or is there any way to donate/contribute towards the upkeep of the project?

The logic alternative would be 'rename', so... 'rn'?

The issue there is that's dangerously close to 'rm'! I'll stick to 'mv' thanks.

Re:Is watching the 1984 Ghostbusters movie killing people? on Monday November 29, 2021 @05:25AM (#29378190)
This feels like one of those browser addons/scripts that replaces words,e.g

"being vaccinated" -> "watched the 1984 Ghostbusters" "unvaccinated" -> "2021 Ghostbusters movie"

I find it interesting that most of the comments are about physical products.

The 'best design' is often something that's so frictionless and easy to use that it's invisible in day-to-day use. Everyday infrastructure like steps are something that's noticeable when they're off (e.g. spaced too far apart, or too steep); most are designed well.

It's easy to find things that are designed poorly. But much less tangible to find a 'best designed' item.

Re:The Humble Brilliance of Italy's Moka Coffee Pot (2018) on Friday November 26, 2021 @02:56AM (#29348246)
I love the aeropress for ease of use, would definitely recommend. I've only used a moka pot a few times (one provided at an airBnB actually), and I'm interested in getting one, but haven't yet.

I think there's less temperature control with a Moka pot, and I'd say cleanup is more effort than a simple aeropress puck.

Re:Paper Website: Start a tiny website from your notebook on Friday November 12, 2021 @04:35AM (#29197646)
I love the concept of this, although I can't see it working out for me personally, as I often find myself meticulously re-writing text, so I'm hesitant about hand-written text (maybe that's the difference I need...?).

Separate question - Is there a feed of any sort (e.g. RSS / Atom) on the website that's produced?

The Ocean Cleanup are also researching that with their 'Interceptors'.

The sidebar of checkboxland[1] has a checkbox made out of checkboxes.

Re:What Happened to Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp? on Monday October 04, 2021 @05:18PM (#28752197)
I'm fairly certain that my ISP was affected by this causing an outage of all internet traffic for my network. So it seems possible, although I imagine using an alternate DNS provider should work ok (if they're not overrun by extra traffic)?

Unfortunately I'm not sure what the default DNS on the modem points to..

Some episodes of 'Love Death + Robots' (Netflix) have caused me to double-take as I didn't realise at first they were CGI.

There's a BTS video[1] about the animation on one episode, appears that it was a blend of both CGI + real faces.

Re:Could a four-day working week become the norm? on Friday July 09, 2021 @03:36AM (#27781327)
> Wouldn't a switch to four-day working week just mean a 25% pay increase for those employees?

Would that be a bad thing?

As we've discovered over the past year, a lot of those people play a crucial role in society today - why do they get paid so little for that?

Re:Firefox 89.0 Beta brings a new look on Friday April 30, 2021 @04:18AM (#26990960)
I've just been upgraded to v89 and have this new theme. There are no borders around my tabs now, which make it stupidly hard to differentiate between them (as someone who keeps a lot of tabs open).
I agree, I'd rather not have to turn the brightness up to 100% so that my battery life drains faster to be able to view my phone in direct sunlight.
Is this true for all of the Covid-19 vaccinations? The page only references the 'Pfizer mRNA vaccine' one.

Curiously, does this mean that the Pfizer vaccine is the only one Australia is using/has access to currently?

Re:Apple doesn't care about album cover art on Wednesday March 31, 2021 @03:34PM (#26652000)
What's the alternative option? Stretch and pixelate the album art so it's larger on the screen?

Personally, I wouldn't use a music player to view album art.

Re:Live feed from Iceland erupting volcano [video] on Monday March 22, 2021 @10:07AM (#26540959)
Amazing shot - I wonder what a thermal image would look like of the same scene. Must be pretty hot flying over top of that lava.
Re:Justice at Spotify on Tuesday March 16, 2021 @12:22PM (#26478909)
> Spotify doesn’t seem like a monopoly that has pricing power

I'd argue that all music-streaming services have very little pricing power!

Streaming services rely on being an easier/friction-free option as opposed to piracy (or alternatively, buying the copies directly from the musicians).

Your point is still valid though, the competition is still fierce; Amazon, Tidal, Apple.. etc.

Could I submit freedom of information request to my ISP and be provided with all the details they store about my internet browsing? Unfortunately BT are a private company so sounds unlikely..
Re:Hush: Noiseless Browsing for Safari on Sunday January 24, 2021 @12:32PM (#25893845)
I wonder that too. Would this be something the W3C would look into introducing some configurable cookie-consent (i.e. "Accept all", "necessary only", "block all" options) that browser vendors could then pick-up on and adopt so that it wouldn't require manual checks at each website visit?

Re:Advent of Code 2020 on Monday November 30, 2020 @06:59AM (#25252904)
I agree with this. I've participated since 2016, but haven't yet completed all 25 puzzles, I usually burn out after about day 8-10 (partly due to the curve in difficulty).

I'm based in the UK, so the puzzles get unlocked at ~6AM which gives an hour or two before work if I wake up earlier than usual.

I think I'll still take part this year, but at a more relaxed pace.

Re:Show HN: A 1000 auto-generated hexagonal SVG logos on Thursday November 12, 2020 @05:59PM (#25076415)
A few of these are incredibly close to the logos of NatWest (#825) & Mitsubishi (#831, rotated 30°).

Very interesting!

So, I should navigate to an external webpage (which can include other forms of tracking) to unsubscribe from an email that was unsolicited? Personally, I'd rather just flag it as junk/spam.
