Re:The Competitive Moat That AI Can't Replicate on Wednesday June 17, 2026 @03:39PM (#48575730)
When did "X is built one marble at a time" become popular? Maybe search analytics can tell us.

Winston Churchill once laid bricks as a means to outrun the black dog.
If not for taxpayers, the opportunity cost would be incalculably immense.

Thanks for this, I hadn't come across it before.
Re:'It's a Weird Time to Be Rich ' on Friday June 06, 2025 @07:34PM (#44206113)
Last time this happened in the US was during GFC. Mercedes-Benz and BMW "went into hiding" instead of Birkins.

Who's they? Members of every generation have to become class-conscious at some point, no? Some just pick it up quicker, perhaps through a European classic novel or a Great Depression archival newspaper.

Heard from the grapevine that CloudFlare uses it for their analytics.
Re:Knowledge-based society, my ass on Tuesday April 29, 2025 @01:35AM (#43828972)
While traveling by car during one of his many overseas travels, Professor Milton Friedman spotted scores of road builders moving earth with shovels instead of modern machinery. When he asked why powerful equipment wasn’t used instead of so many laborers, his host told him it was to keep employment high in the construction industry. If they used tractors or modern road building equipment, fewer people would have jobs was his host’s logic.

“Then instead of shovels, why don’t you give them spoons and create even more jobs?” Friedman inquired.

How tall was the guy? 80mg a day? Far beyond a reasonable amount.
Do you have a link to this?
Hasn't it always been flexible?

I'll buy someone a coffee if they propose a state-space model that identifies a location on the author's plane as a function of time and incentives :^)
Ostensibly this roostful homecoming is a result of increasing capital costs.
Re:Motivating Personal Growth by Seeking Discomfort on Saturday November 30, 2024 @07:21PM (#42285092)
David Goggin's public persona comes to mind as an extreme example. He frames his journey as one that involved embracing pain and discomfort. Now he preaches it incessantly like a sort of addict to masochism. I think this highlights the point of the study which attempts to say, instead of avoiding discomfort one could welcome it with the added risk that you become some sort of firestarter in the sense that you now cannot sit with being comfortable.

A natural extension of this work may be to study at what point does burnout occur.

I had anticipated that this would've ended with you becoming Captain America.
Re:Ask HN: Real-time speech-to-speech translation on Tuesday October 29, 2024 @03:13AM (#41980246)
Off topic, but what's the state-of-art behind speech recognition models at the moment?

Are people still using with DTW + HMMs?

Re:Amusing Ourselves to Death on Tuesday October 08, 2024 @02:10PM (#41780113)
I actually do agree with you. If you "think locally and act locally" while young, you run the risk of being blindsided by tail outcomes in the future.

I think either global thinking or acting in youth is a prerequisite to arriving at the position you describe. I mean, is there a better explanation for mid-life crises?

Re:Amusing Ourselves to Death on Saturday September 28, 2024 @04:57AM (#41678937)
It's my opinion that "thinking locally and acting locally" is a strategy better reserved for old age.
Re:Implement algorithms that minimize slippage on Wednesday September 18, 2024 @01:12PM (#41582622)
Love it, such a straightforward formulation.
Re:Implement algorithms that minimize slippage on Wednesday September 18, 2024 @04:23AM (#41577206)
Is slippage minimization even a tractable problem besides applying loose heuristics derived from empirical insights, e.g., identifying reliable early-signals of narrowing spreads and increased liquidity for a given exchange?
Re:Algorithmic Wage Discrimination on Wednesday September 11, 2024 @05:23PM (#41515462)
Off-topic, does anyone know whether the source code for this UI is open source?
Re:Stocks trampled as Nikkei crashes 13% on Monday August 05, 2024 @04:34AM (#41159208)
Surely this'll trigger unwinding of the options dispersion trades that have been rumored to have been building up.

Re:The unusual economics of the Birkin handbag on Monday June 24, 2024 @02:30AM (#40773059)
Cue the classic joke:

A finance professor is walking across the University of Chicago campus with a student. They come upon $20 lying on the ground, and the student leans down to pick it up. The professor said, “Don’t bother. If it was really there, somebody else would’ve already picked it up.”

Re:The 10x developer makes their whole team better on Friday June 21, 2024 @01:42AM (#40746528)
I wonder if there's a strong positive correlation between periods of high Federal Fund Rates and periods of prevailing sentiment that espouses for 10x developers.
Re:Some Thoughts as I Sit Here in Another Standup on Sunday June 02, 2024 @09:09PM (#40558436)
I heartily prescribe the programmer's manifesto to the author:

Marginally related (this paper explains the mechanisms of a DeFi exploit which are the same mechanisms used generally in this 'strategy'): https://arxiv.org/abs/2003.03810
What does "no longer needed" mean? I think most people who encourage the exchange of money for 'happiness' don't fully grasp the subjectivity of this judgement.

A person's preferred strategy for expending and conserving resources is an emotionally-charged choice. Who am I to say anything about their choices?
