Re:Rethinking Hierarchy in the Workplace (2017) on Wednesday June 29, 2022 @01:01PM (#31922846)
You make some great points. The arbitrary entitlement is an important and vital step in the growth of an organization. Not every basketball fan should play or work for a NBA team. There has to be some sort of gatekeeping otherwise a bad hire or misplaced promotion could become a cancer that kills from within.

Does remarkable use a fork of ChromiumOS? ChromiumOS uses the BOOT-A and BOOT-B partitions for upgrades and it reverts to the previously used boot partition if the OS fails to successfully boot[0].

Great explanation... For anyone interested, the following jupyter notebook explains three different ways to process HTTP requests: serial requests (the baseline), pipelined requests and parallel requests with multiple connections (and without threads).

Re:Mēris botnet, climbing to the record on Thursday September 09, 2021 @12:39PM (#28471628)
Introducing javascript into the mix will not make the botnet more difficult to detect. Headless browsers have their own fingerprints which allow defenders to identify them from legitimate traffic. You can spoof the features that headless browsers don't have but that will always be a cat and mouse game.
Re:Stopping FTP support in Firefox 90 on Tuesday July 20, 2021 @02:14PM (#27897213)
Yes, good point. Gopher is internet browsing too but is Firefox the best way to experience FTP and Gopher? How many different protocols should Firefox support? Firefox does not have the same resources as Google so focusing on what Firefox is known to do best such as HTTP and its supporting protocols, like WebSocket, really well looks like a good strategy.

Good legal documentation is an insurance policy. You never want to use it but it is vital when something happens and you have to refer to it.
Even if the loan was taken out under a LLC, lenders would require a personal guarantee for a new and unproven venture.

I agree... what I think they meant to say is something along the lines of software defaults are already optimized to maximize and take advantage of the hardware's abilities so work is completed faster. The 'with the software baked in' should be changed to reflect the value proposition that Oxide is alluding to.

You are describing the Socratic Method[0]. It is a great way to discover the blind spots in your reasoning and enhance your worldview. Unfortunately, there are people who feel extremely threatened by the process.

Re:Feeling like a pariah, even when you’re not on Monday May 17, 2021 @11:36AM (#27184655)
This is why it is so important to have the courage to get up and leave. If one has been successfully sidelined then, yes, they will become an actual pariah because they feel like they have to explain everything that they do and will continue to do so because they feel like no one is acknowledging them. This is part of the gaslighters trap.

It should not be a surprise that there are some who might feel threatened by people who want to challenge the status quo in search of the truth or constantly push their mental and physical limits.

And when you are done with that, I highly suggest reading Edward Thorp's autobiography "Man for all markets" where he employs the Kelly Criterion in adventure after adventure. He not only developed the first card counting system for blackjack but he also created the first wearable computer to beat roulette (with Claude Shannon).

Re:LineageOS 18.1 on Thursday April 01, 2021 @01:28PM (#26663576)
I have used XPrivacyLua for years. It is great but not perfect.

Daniel Micay, author of GrapheneOS (an Android fork), pointed out some shortcomings of XPrivacyLua on reddit[0]:

You do probably want the ability to force apps to see fake data, but this doesn't do that. It's a client-side check inserted into the app that the app can bypass (even unintentionally, by using a different client-side implementation) or disable.

It does not provide any isolation and cannot fundamentally improve privacy / security because it's based on client side checks, which is not a working approach. It relies on apps not accessing the data via other approaches or alternate implementations of the client-side code, which isn't uncommon. Apps can also detect it and simply work around it directly. This will only give you a false sense of privacy / security. Apps will likely use the fake data for their user-facing functionality, making you think that it works, but a tracking SDK bundled with the app can easily bypass this and harvest your data if you allow the permissions via the OS. This is harmful approach...

Yes, confidence to try something new and problem solving are important factors but once one solves for those then testing for the ability to communicate well with others might be as or even more important than having the required computer skills.

I used Zachtronic's TIS-100 [0] as a test variable and found the best person to work with. I believe it was a two way street because they saw an opportunity to work with someone who attacks problems a little differently. I am in real estate. Who would have thought knowing something about assembly would be helpful?

... and M66B developed XPrivacyLua: https://github.com/M66B/XPrivacyLua

it spoofs and restricts Android API calls made by apps.

I'm shocked that Porsche and Electrify America condoned this.
Re:How to Stop Endless Discussions on Sunday January 03, 2021 @06:35PM (#25626345)
I have found the Socratic Method[0] brings out the best outcomes because it forces everyone to show what they think they know, have their assumptions tested and hear about things they might not have considered or even know about. From my experience, everyone is ultimately able to reach a higher level of understanding for the topic or problem which allows for better decision making. The more diverse the participants' backgrounds the larger the network of knowledge one is able to tap into.

Unfortunately, you are right that there are people who are extremely threatened by the Socratic Method. In Plato's Cave[1], Socrates talks about how some people strive to explore and learn while others have no desire to broaden their knowledge as "they know no better life."
