Re:Clojure: All grown up on Tuesday March 12, 2013 @04:38PM (#5364713)
Well the stacktraces are deeper, there is no way getting around that. In practice it's not much of a problem though as you quickly learn to identify the lines from your own code.

Debugging tends to be more REPL based than debugger based. It is possible to debug from Eclipse using the build in debugger, but it's not something i have done as it is not really necessary.

There is still no good way to create a multi leg travel. That's the problem I would personally tackle, as I face it every time I am planning a travel.
Re:Linux Gamers Make Up ~2% Of Valve's Steam Users on Saturday March 02, 2013 @06:16PM (#5311535)
The way I understand it is that they are making an investment in Linux to allow their upcoming steam box to run Linux.

Also it allows (or will allow) users to avoid using Windows just to be able to play games. This is a good thing all around.

Any chance you could explain this further? I would love to hear some tricks finding the best prices.
One thing that seems to missing from most travel sites is the ability to compose a travel consisting of several legs.

For instance, this spring I am going to India with work, after which I want to travel to somewhere in southeast asia, probably with one or two stops, and then home to copenhagen.

It should be possible to have an overview over my entire travel, not just the one leg or a simple return trip as my travels are rarely just that.

(looks good though, I am definitely going to try it)

Asking from ignorance here, is there a common protocol in use to communicate with printers e.g. find, interact with (print) and query (ask for toner level for instance) them?

Seems it would make a valuable tool for managing a larger number of printers, to know when to switch the toner for instance.

Re:What does randomness look like? on Saturday December 22, 2012 @04:30AM (#4956222)
I have another anecdote from WoW regarding randomness.

The raid boss Onyxia (a great big dragon in a cave, which you could only kill once a week as i recall) had a phase where she would take off and fly above the raid. Once in a while she would then do a deep breath, a fire attack which had a high chance at killing you if it hit you.

Now, all sorts of tactics emerged on how to handle the fire attacks. One that stuck for a very long time was that the number of DOTs (Damage Over Time) would lower the number of deep breaths you got.

I'm sure there were other theories as well, but this one stuck for years with raid leaders yelling at warlocks, the class with most dots, to add more dots and even stacking the raid with warlocks to get as many dots as possible (we need at least 4 warlocks to take her).

In the end there was a developer (or just Blizzard employee) who admitted that it was in fact random. This story pops back in my head once in a while because I think we do this a lot on larger scales too without realizing it: See some phenomenon caused by randomness, come up with a theory, and because it is not easily refuted (after all it works most of the time right?) it becomes common knowledge that everyone follows.

Re:IntelliJ IDEA 12 Released on Thursday December 06, 2012 @03:05AM (#4880804)
I use Eclipse simply because it allows me to have multiple projects open in the same workspace and search for files/classes across all projects. When Idea gets that feature I'll probably take another look at it.
Re:LuaJit 2.0 is out on Monday November 12, 2012 @06:01PM (#4775253)
Are there any other current benchmarks around for LuaJIT vs for instance java?
Re:Priceline.com acquires Kayak for $1.8B on Thursday November 08, 2012 @05:57PM (#4760347)
This may not be the place or time to ask this but here goes anyway:

How do the travel indexing sites like Kayak get their data? Surely they don't index or consume APIs from the travel companies individually?

Re:Obama's Secret Weapon In The South is 129 Million Years Old on Thursday November 08, 2012 @11:44AM (#4758530)
You are not helping people because of their race, so why use that to select who gets help? There are rich black people as well as there are poor white people.
Re:Flightfox + AirBnb + Vayable on Tuesday October 16, 2012 @04:01AM (#4658830)
Is there any information about this that you can point to? I'd be interested to read up on this.
I'd like to second that Facebook is a non-starter for me. You should provide an alternative that doesnt connect to facebook, twitter etc unless you want to.
Re:Fly to 6 Continents in Style on Wednesday August 15, 2012 @05:28PM (#4388331)
So does the travel agent book the flight for you when you award him the finder's fee?

I mean I know it says in your FAQ: "Our experts provide detailed booking instructions for you to buy those flights."

But I am just not totally clear on how this works and how the prices listed are provided. Could you elaborate? Also, is there potential for price differences when an agent finds prices for someone in another country?

Re:Handy text manipulation tricks in Sublime Text 2 on Tuesday June 12, 2012 @03:44PM (#4102384)
Sorry, I should have been more clear. I meant multiple projects in the same workspace, like what netbeans or eclipse has (or even Sublime).

I really like being able to navigate in all my open projects at the same time. Not having it is a no-go for me.

Re:Handy text manipulation tricks in Sublime Text 2 on Tuesday June 12, 2012 @02:11AM (#4099056)
Does it allow you to have multiple projects open at the same time yet? That was what prevented me from using it earlier.
Re:GapList – A Lightning-Fast List Implementation on Wednesday May 09, 2012 @02:35AM (#3947319)
Out of curiosity, how do you go about finding out if your code is inlined or not?
That was an incredibly inspiring read. Now I want to work there more than anything, but I don't feel worthy. Off to make myself more T-shaped.

Edit: I would still love to hear how it actually is to work there in practice though.

That would be "datascience", lower case.
