Re:So I guess everyone uses LLMs to think now on Sunday November 01, 2026 @06:37PM (#50331075)
something that does meaningfully affect readability is WRITING IN ALL CAPS. you're almost guaranteed to have encountered the visually distinct shapes of lowercased words thousands more times than you've encountered the shapes of their uppercased counterparts
Re:So I guess everyone uses LLMs to think now on Sunday November 01, 2026 @06:25PM (#50330976)
i highly recommend asking for terse or concise responses in whatever your chosen LLM calls its system prompt. you can give a brief explanation of your areas of expertise and say that you don't need those things explained to you. there are limits to how much this stuff works, but it's worth a shot
Re:So I guess everyone uses LLMs to think now on Sunday November 01, 2026 @06:17PM (#50330915)
more or less, but a lot of people have been doing this for decades. to do it sanely on a phone requires adding lowercased words to your dictionary like i'm, i'd, i'll, and i've. a lot of us also leave off the trailing period
Re:I still teach OpenGL ES 3.0 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @03:45AM (#50255778)
instead of iterating over an array and if-branching to one of two paths for each item, conceive of your conditionals as logic operations which test for set membership (i.e. "is this array item a member of the set i care about?") and with this array mask of "do the thing or don't do the thing" flags, you can mutate your data 0 or 1 times.

the key for me is thinking in terms of sets—much of your conditional logic is probably about sorting things into sets anyway.

Re:Eunice is almost here (William Gibson, Agency) on Sunday October 25, 2026 @05:14PM (#50236125)
yes, it bears repeating that text editors didn't keep entire documents resident in memory, they maybe buffered a page ahead and behind.

when it appeared as a feature, spell checking was impressive for the technical feat of compressing word lists with tens of thousands of entries into representations suitable for tiny memories.

>pretty much none of which were actually brought into daily life by AT&T...

i don't care about facts, tom selleck convinced me it was at&t

five minutes? it took me two minutes to come up with a threat:

someone will serve an innocuous page to adults, and some malicious honeypot trickery to children, all based on an http header.

"you've won five billion robux! click allow [to a webcam permission] to be able to receive them into your account!"

Re:A shell colon does nothing. Use it anyway. on Sunday July 26, 2026 @06:21AM (#49056563)
nice dotfile
Re:A shell colon does nothing. Use it anyway. on Sunday July 26, 2026 @06:16AM (#49056535)
there are some early unix tapes floating around, and in those early shells, i'm fairly certain the colon was one of only two special-cased code paths after the command line was parsed. does anyone recall more specifically?
as a matter of ux, users probably don't need to know that a session is being instantiated, and probably expect a simple play button

fun

Re:The war on terror primed America for autocracy on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @04:02AM (#48656673)
this is a dense comment (there's a lot here to unpack). it sounds like you're saying:

once it became clear that conquest with an explicit intended return of large numbers of enslaved people would allow caesar to pay debts and fund further expansion, the pyramid was capped and required exponential expansion to perpetuate its economic aims. and this was the beginning of the end. a model which required autocratic steering to operate.

wouldn't that be a hash of the image signed by a trusted entity and stored on a chain? maybe i'm overlooking why this doesn't work
Re:Wake up! 16b on Sunday May 24, 2026 @03:47AM (#48255355)
i can barely accept this is possible
it would be helpful to know why this was developed!

running data science tasks on constrained systems may be an unfamiliar goal for many on hn, but i can imagine reasons for doing so.

perhaps you can share real world use cases and talk about the target environments for this tooling.

Re:delta time on Thursday May 14, 2026 @07:07AM (#48133756)
i don't think time moves faster as we age, i think our perceived duration of early life grows because we keep thinking about it.

for example, i have spent 35 years thinking about the events which took place at age 8, but i have only spent 8 years thinking about the events of age 35.

love a good screenshot easter egg

im[ns]ho, people want desperately to believe that only state funded actors can possess that kind of power.
the administration which declares ad-hoc emergencies is behaving as predicted
Re:Flameshot on Friday January 30, 2026 @04:21AM (#46822248)
i've been using flameshot with wayland the last six months, simply because i didn't know i couldn't
Re:Why do RSS readers look like email clients? on Thursday January 29, 2026 @08:58AM (#46810273)
yes, i mutter to the screen "why not just give us your prompt and let us think about it?"
we'll be working on that very strongly in the next period of time
Re:Wine 11.0 on Friday January 23, 2026 @12:04PM (#46734866)
you really should use Qt. it's nicer than win32 in many ways, and it has "batteries included."
if it worked on a pentium iii, it should work on a phone with webgl. who's going to port it?
Re:Replace the Retiring Windows XP with Linux on Sunday January 11, 2026 @02:55PM (#46579306)
should be quite a bit faster than that now. 1-2ms would be normal
Re:Stranger Things creator says turn off "garbage" settings on Monday December 29, 2025 @10:53PM (#46429363)
i often think about all the music ruined by self obsessed dorks singing soulless middle school poetry, and it's the main application of AI i'm quite excited for
Re:Icons in Menus Everywhere – Send Help on Tuesday December 09, 2025 @02:30AM (#46202233)
an icon for "save" will suffice to help me find the portion of the menu with "save as", "save a copy", and "export". when all four have the same icon, or slight variations, i'm back to reading each one to discern the difference.
Re:The consumption of AI-generated content at scale on Tuesday December 09, 2025 @02:14AM (#46202138)
i'll never give up the em dash. and i will continue to evangelize the en dash from now–forever (hint hint, ranges should use en dashes instead of hyphens).
this has been my casual finding as well. why would i want all that conversational crap in the context window?
Re:Cassette tapes are making a comeback. Yes on Tuesday December 09, 2025 @12:29AM (#46201558)
i had ONE cassette unwind. my less careful friend was always winding them with a pencil. the culprit? button mashing between fast-forward and play.
