Re:Who knew the first AI battles would be fought by artists? on Thursday December 15, 2022 @08:57AM (#33999523)
It should be an improvement for people to get a career in something they enjoy, instead of what pays the most money.

"Sure it might produce convincing examples of human speech, but it fundamentally lacks an internal point of view that it can express..."

Sounds just like the chess experts from 30 years ago. Their belief at the time was that computers were good at tactical chess, but had no idea how to make a plan. And Go would be impossible for computers, due to the branching factor. Humans would always be better, because they could plan.

GPT (or a future successor) might not be able to have "an internal point of view". But it might not matter.

Launched five years ago at $3000.

Three months ago, FTX was offering 8% interest APY. FTX knew they were in trouble, and needed new deposits to stay afloat. This makes it a ponzi.

Curious how you do this? The Obsidian Sync option is $96/year.

Re:AI and the Future of Pixel Art on Wednesday November 09, 2022 @09:21AM (#33531932)
Agreed. AI art will continue to improve.

This reminds of of the chess computers from 30 years ago. Experts were convinced computers would never beat GM humans, based on the state-of-the-art of the time. They never took into account all the future advancements in hardware and software.

AI can predict the behavior of the users, feeding them as many relevant ads as possible, while keeping them engaged.

How will Bitcoin fix it? If I buy a video card with bitcoin, but get sent a brick instead, how does "Blockchain as Arbiter" get my bitcoins back?
The company has not yet provided any real numbers. I want to know how much electricity is generated at a specific wind speed. The lack of this most basic number leads me to believe this isn't as good as it sounds.
Some places have geographic features that make the cardinals easy. Like in Denver, the mountains are always west.
The fine is supposed to act as a deterrent, right?

Re:Choose the smallest number not chosen yet on Thursday September 29, 2022 @10:56AM (#33021608)
picking 1 would still dominate over any other strategy, in a head-to-head.

However, if you are trying to maximize your H2H score against a pool of contestants, a cooperation strategy, where you both alternated taking the lower number would be close to optimal.

Re:Choose the smallest number not chosen yet on Thursday September 29, 2022 @10:52AM (#33021544)
I believe this strategy will work against any other strategy, not just mirror strategy. Of course, against mirror strat, 1/N is correct.
Re:Make-A-Video: AI system that generates videos from text on Thursday September 29, 2022 @10:34AM (#33021244)
Right and wrong.

It's not over for traditional moving-making. It would be decades before the software and hardware could surpass. But it will improve tremendously, just like computers do for nearly everything.

Apple also funds much of TSMC's growth, without any pathway to ownership. Apple is likely just buying top priority.

There have been recent advances in sand batteries to store heat. Use the excess energy to heat the sand. Then pull heat from it in the winter to heat the house. Unsure if this would scale down to personal usage.

Engineered wood solved that problem. Plywood is a type of engineered wood. Same for gluelams, LVLs, and CLTs. These are typically stronger than solid timber, including old growth.

It does take more energy to fabricate, but still much less than concrete and steel.

Re:The Original “Universal” Port by Atari on Thursday September 01, 2022 @10:27AM (#32676707)
I had both 99/4a and later the C64. The C64 was just much more open, a much better computer to learn on.
Re:How to pay your rent with your open source project (2020) on Wednesday August 24, 2022 @10:35AM (#32580009)
The accepted definition of "open source" includes the ability to modify and redistribute freely. A "non-commercial use" clause limits this

Agreed. I liken this to computer chess, and later computer go. It was long believed both were impossible.
Here in the US, we could power the entire country with solar panels by just using 1% of the land now dedicated to agriculture.

Today's "classic version" is just a variant that allows pawns to move two squares on their first move.
Intel had profits of $20B last year. They could easily build a new modern fab every year if they wanted to. But it makes more sense for them to spend tax payers money instead.

I'm not following here. What defines "legal timestamps" in our current system? I'm unaware of any laws in the US that uses the actual position of the sun to determine the time.

"Noon" when the sun is at the highest point, can vary over an hour across a timezone.

A lawyer could argue that the algorithm is producing a derivative work of the copyrighted input.

Sure, if you limit the numbers to just school shootings. Why not count all kid deaths by firearms? A kid is twice as likely to die by bullet than by suicide.

School shootings are just the currently most visible form of kid death by bullet.

Re:I Sell Onions on the Internet (2019) on Wednesday July 13, 2022 @09:17AM (#32082225)
IMO, the story is not about the onions. It's about building a business from a domain name. A good domain name is worth x10 in marketing. The other HN articles show more of strategy of building around a domain name.
