on a Mac, it's Option+Shift+-

— (em dash)

Option+- gives you an "en dash": – which is longer than a normal hyphen.

Agreed re: the sci-fi story / trope.

I feel like a lot of this is a problem when someone technical is attempting to communicate a complicated technical subject to a less-technical audience.

I can only dumb a thing down so much before the description is useless (when you zoom out too much you lose the details). Even technical people who could understand it but are lazy / "in a hurry" use the summary, without thinking about what detail they are losing.

Even more infuriating is when they then reply to my email, having only read the AI summary, and ask a question that was already answered by my message.

This is the exact same thing that happened pre-AI, with the added step of wasting energy/resources on the AI summary in the middle.

outside of the US, whatsapp has a huge chunk of the "private" messaging market. Everything that we usually use SMS or iMessage for, happens via whatsapp in much of Europe and South America.
Re:216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video] on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @10:30PM (#49620092)
How does it benefit Apple for their customers to enable their wifi? They are fairly explicit about NOT tracking everything you do and selling it.

OTOH, it benefits the phone owner to use wifi, as it's lower power use than cellular the majority of the time.

Re:216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video] on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @10:26PM (#49620055)
A bunch of the morons out there who turn off wifi out in public because they read some random NYPost article about it "tracking" you, would then be bitching to Apple and/or their cell carriers about why their performance is so bad at home when it doesn't auto-join wifi overnight.

I would agree with you that it should operate like a dumb toggle if they didn't have the notification saying that it would auto re-enable again.

Synology actually supports the old (non-encrypted) rsync protocol, too. On a trusted LAN, it runs much quicker that way than with rsync-over-ssh...

I just finished slurping all of my files off an old Synology and onto a TrueNAS server. Unlike the article here, my Syno is 2x1Gb in a LAG, so I was really only getting ~1Gbps at max.

One disappointment with TrueNAS is that it doesn't support SMB-MC unless you put each interface on a separate subnet (which is a strange limitation because Samba itself doesn't seem to suffer from this, since synology handles it fine)

If that's the setup, the only way anything would run more than 1Gb is if the Synology is doing SMB-multichannel (which if they setup 4x1Gb LAG, then it's not SMB-MC). [edit] reading the article, they do have the Syno setup for SMB-MC and that's the only reason this wasn't stuck at ~120MB/s
Re:The Microsoft Rebrand Registry on Wednesday August 19, 2026 @01:06AM (#49357084)
There is also Xbox Series S, around the same time as the Series X...
i have a 3-letter .onl domain that is the first 3 letters of my last name

I have actually needed to use it, because my cell provider (Visible) has absolutely moronic form validation that doesn't recognize a hyphen as a valid character in an email address, even though it very much is. (My main .net domain has a hyphen in it)

and this is why everything needs 32+GB of RAM and an assload of storage.

LLMs don't have human attention to detail, IME

Re:HomeLab #1: MikroTik as a Home Router on Sunday July 19, 2026 @06:07PM (#48972086)
crs305 will choke when you start asking it to do NAT. it's a switch. It should be able to hardware-route between VLANs but it's not made for "home router" duties.
Re:HomeLab #1: MikroTik as a Home Router on Sunday July 19, 2026 @06:01PM (#48972053)
It was, until they came up with v4 around a year ago or so.

It's possible to run v3 under Wine on a Mac but it was kind of clunky. V4 is much nicer (also runs on Linux too).

AFAIK this is because TrueNAS is trying to be all things to everyone, and they like Docker more than BSD jails.
Re:My Students Can't Read on Wednesday June 03, 2026 @12:20AM (#48379855)
Irony: can't read TFA without bypassing a signin-wall.
This isn't a 26.5 bug, this is a bug fixed in 26.5.

I think Veronica setup an identical demo copy in a VM and thus could easily screenshot the VM.
Re:I Do Not Recommend Bitwarden on Saturday May 02, 2026 @06:20PM (#47991166)
author of the site appears to be an anti-JS fringe person, and that's their method of "protest."

If you switch away and then come back to the tab, they have a popover explaining all of this.

I just went and disabled JS for their silly site.

Re:People Love to Work Hard on Tuesday April 07, 2026 @04:10AM (#47672111)
this...

i work for a community-focused nonprofit, but the middle managers are ineffectual and problematic, and the c-levels aren't clueful enough to realize the toxicity being created below them (plus are too obsessed with bolstering their own careers to care).

i'm tired of it, despite truly believing in the org's mission.

Re:This System Can Go Fuck Itself and Burn in Hell on Sunday March 01, 2026 @04:29PM (#47210856)
I don't disagree with much of what the author wrote here, except for the part about "I'm starving, but I'm vegan so I won't eat SPAM and I won't eat the peanut butter because it is 'processed' and has 'chemicals.'"

Humans are omnivores, veganism is a choice. You don't get to complain about how rough it is when you yourself have chosen to play with hard mode turned on. Obviously if there are health issues that require an altered diet that's a different story, but if that was mentioned I missed it somehow.

Everything else about the story has merit though, the rich are too rich and the US's "safety nets" are awful. Nobody should go bankrupt due to health problems they can't control.

Re:The Wonder of Modern Drywall on Friday February 13, 2026 @04:14AM (#47000683)
yeah, my parents' US home (which was originally my grandmother's) in the eastern half of the US has plaster-on-drywall construction.

it is a bitch and a half for hanging anything (just like plaster on lath), plus it screws up wifi.

Pro tip for finding a stud, if you have access to the bare floor -- stick a drywalling knife / spatula under the bottom trim and poke. you can find the studs that way, and then measure off since 16" is pretty common. Measuring off the edge of an electrical box can work too, but you have to figure out what side of the stud the box is on...

Re:Resizing windows on macOS Tahoe – the saga continues on Thursday February 12, 2026 @09:34PM (#46998271)
well this certainly goes a long way to explaining why i've been fighting with window resize on tahoe :p

it's stupidly difficult to grab windows by the flat edges, too

Re:Locked out: How a gift card purchase destroyed an Apple account on Wednesday December 17, 2025 @01:59AM (#46299019)
Companies that are limiting what characters people use in their passwords are almost definitely doing something incredibly wrong with security.

(passwords should be hashed...)

Re:Making macOS Bearable on Wednesday December 10, 2025 @02:28AM (#46215084)
This is the way, though. I do exactly the same thing. I was a trackball user for many years on Windows (due to wrist & arm pain from mouse use), but the Magic Trackpad works way better with macOS than trackballs (primarily because the Kensington software is garbage).
Re:The Government Ate My Name on Thursday October 09, 2025 @11:10PM (#45535073)
If I saw your name in a CRM system, as a USican, I would assume that some dumbass on my team accidentally pasted your last name into the field twice.
Re:The Government Ate My Name on Thursday October 09, 2025 @10:56PM (#45535019)
I had a former coworker who had just (legally) changed his entire name in order to fully separate himself from his family when he started with the company. (This was in the US.) It made the onboarding kind of weird, because he originally gave us one name but then when he started had an entirely different one.
Re:I spent the day teaching seniors how to use an iPhone on Friday October 03, 2025 @01:37AM (#45459374)
Chromebooks work pretty well for seniors, IMO. Cheaper than iPads too.
Re:I spent the day teaching seniors how to use an iPhone on Friday October 03, 2025 @01:37AM (#45459369)
I would've refused to give her the cesspool that is conservative social media, but I guess if she's explicitly asking for it she's probably too far gone to remediate
Re:I spent the day teaching seniors how to use an iPhone on Friday October 03, 2025 @01:35AM (#45459354)
the fact that it allows more screen space for content is appreciated, but the way it was forced on everyone pisses me off.

You can change it in settings -> Apps -> Safari, under the "Tabs" section - "Bottom" is like what it used to be. I immediately switched to that after the update to 26, but once I realized you could swipe up from the address bar to get to the tab view, I switched back so I could get more content space.

I don't like that it's two taps to get to the share button now though.

Re:I spent the day teaching seniors how to use an iPhone on Friday October 03, 2025 @01:21AM (#45459287)
oh come on, you just need to buy a Mac so you can use one of the management toolkits to prevent that from happening. it Just Works!

_deeply_ /s of course

(and I say this as someone who is basically 100% a Mac user who admins Linux for a living... Apple makes a lot of stupid / frustrating decisions that I don't agree with, but I still prefer it over the alternatives)

Re:I spent the day teaching seniors how to use an iPhone on Friday October 03, 2025 @01:15AM (#45459247)
This is part of why I absolutely LOATHE the multiple "sign-in-with-Y" prompts on everything.

Federation's not a terrible idea for people who don't "get it," but many places are then starting to _hide_ the standard email-based login form... it's bonkers.

Google can go DIAF for their browser-based forced popover that so many sites have opted-in to (so they can sell more expensive ads, of course). [I use Vivaldi which is Chromium-based and AFAIK there's no way to shut off those prompts]
