Just finished reading this book. Do recommend! But first read A Fire Upon The Deep.
P. S. Don't bother with Children of the Sky
They're making it as a transpiler to their dialect of C++. On other OS it can also work because they have the Serenity Browser engine running on Linux. So probably take some parts of the build chain there and off you go.
Ukraine has been synchronized only very recently and it's much more like an emergency interconnect. Zaporozhi Power Plant is under attack.
Seems very weird to me. Where's the difference between me using a Photoshop plugin that generates some parts of the image and me using Stable Diffusion that generates some parts of the image? How do you know how much of the image was generated and how much was created by my own hand in Photoshop? What if I have Stable Diffusion as Photoshop plugin?
Looking at Tenerife south...
My state has published plans for electricity usage limits just today. It would be really weird if we were the only ones.
It's really not democratic at all. Democratic would be if we all voted about all seats. How am I supposed to change anything ever if I vote about 2% of the seats? Sorry not sorry for being born where I was.
> how exactly are they deciding for everyone?
That's easy - by building the largest cohesive blocs. The rest is divided to small bickering parties with just a few seats each (often just one each), and easy to conquer.
I don't believe that for a minute - since now the market is choosing nuclear the moment the EU allowed it to be considered green. We were waiting for it for a decade with projects in hand and now there are entire new reactors being built,
all so suddenly. Experts from my country were lobbying for that at least since 2008. The EU commission has chosen feels instead of evidence and nobody will ever pay for that - except Ukrainians with their lives and poorer Europeans with their savings.
And BTW this isn't just about the market - our state wanted to support nuclear but the EU sued it for unfair competition. Oh no, the German electricity producers might make less profit from their Russian gas, what would we do?!?!?
It was never a rational economic choice, everybody in the eastern EU knew this is coming. While we were sounding the alarms and pointing to Georgia in 2008, Westerners were busy mashing "reset buttons" with uncle Putin. Not even 2014 invasion to Ukraine changed their minds and now they act surprised?
You could've simply read the official Russian doctrine. "oil is for profits, gas is for political control" - they even published it on the web FFS.
As I said, the member was from an opposition party. Nobody of the population wanted them in the government in the first place, they were there due to a background deal. The EU makes people who nobody voted for too powerful.
> Then, the nomination of the Comission and individual comissioners are validated or not by the European Parliament, whose members are again chosen democratically in every member state.
No, each member state votes about their own portion of seats. So Germany and France decides for everyone. That's shit. Germans go crazy anti-science and everybody pays - except the Germans who get the EU to find solution out of the money it takes from all states.
The EU assigns money it takes from the states - money the pro-nuclear states would've used for their nuclear energy, but since it was appropriated by the EU and then assigned by its own rules that were constructed to rule out nuclear energy, they couldn't. So our pro-nuclear state has huge fields of solar arrays that everybody here hates because it replaced natural parks and makes us more reliant on gas powerplants, and the our/EU money was taken by gangsters, we call them the "solar barons" - great, thanks EU.
What ballot box? I can't vote about the Commission... It was chosen by a vote of ministers but that minister was actually from a opposition party here! This """democratic""" system is broken. And my vote about the EU Parliament affects only 2% of the total seats.
Bought some coal for the winter months. Also going to use wood - but I have enough of my own.
What does it have to do with the US? This is about the EU only. The EU only put all focus on "green" energy and then tried to solve the problems it created with fossil fuels while forgetting about or even actively working against nuclear. What the US did has nothing to do with that.
My Galaxy S2 still works, it even has decent battery life (at least a day). But would I want to use it? No. I like technological improvements. I buy a new phone because I want new capabilities - and that's bound to its computing performance. If I wanted to just call and send SMS, I would've kept using my Sony Ericsson from 2007, that one also still works flawlessly.
Most people I know - techies or not, even the grandmas - have drawers full of working phones. Clearly longevity is not the problem.
Links? Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. I hope you're not going to link Russian fascist propaganda, though.
Bullshit. One thing is uncomfortable - and that happens during homeschooling more than enough, so that's how you learn to deal with it. Another thing is leading a kid to suicide and/or homicide with the uncomfortable. That's way too much, and it's caused by the teachers not protecting the kids, since they simply don't care and sometimes it's fun to them too.
How is a kid supposed to learn to deal with the uncomfortable situations when everything they do is shut down and punished by a teacher but they don't care about the actual problem and it's perpetrators? How is a 7 year old kid supposed to stand up to the teachers?
The problem with supporters of schools is that you have a very idealized view of what's happening there. I get it, you had it good - but you shouldn't ignore that there's a pretty significant amount of kids who don't fit into the system. Nobody wants to cancel schools completely - just different options for kids who aren't going to thrive there.
When I sat next to other kids there weren't discussions, there was fighting and stealing my stuff and teachers not reacting because they sat me next to the precious ones who couldn't do anything wrong so "they keep an eye on me" - and then punishing me for my missing stuff. When we had to do projects I was the only one working and the other kids ignoring me on purpose - but somehow that was my fault too and I got a bad grade because "it was supposed to be a team project".
Fuck schools. It's not my fault I was born with ADHD - and if you force me into the school then it's on you to learn to deal with it. But that's not going to happen - and thus homeschooling is the way for my children.
My pet peeve was not being able to use 2 windows next to each other on my 1280x1024 screen because the UIs assumed full screen usage.
Phones - for sure, that's a modern development. But it's been more than a decade now, there are adult people who don't remember world without iPhones and Androids! Crazy... Myself, I started on Windows 98, but it's Windows XP (and Delphi) that defines my childhood.
To be honest, helping doctors in Africa is one of the few things I'd gladly label as advancing humanity.
That doesn't stop the bullies with good grades that are liked by teachers.
Why is it so great to force children to socialize for 6+ hours with people they might hate and who might hate them? Especially in an environment where the adults are so undernumbered they can't possibly keep track of what's happening - and sometimes they participate in the hate towards specific children too?
With homeschooling, the parent sees what's happening and can protect their child. Nobody will protect them at school - especially if the school lies to the parents to save face/protect teachers. And nobody will ever pay for the destroyed family relationships this produces.
Despite the company name, metaverse has nothing to do with Meta (except the viewing device, but well that's your monitor brand and nothing else). Metaverse has been with us much longer than just since Meta was named Meta (or Facebook, or The Facebook).
That's the point, they didn't. You won't get your iPhone without globalized trade.
Sure, my point is that the changes made with Alcubierre drive are controllable.
Still, having a drive that doesn't need to push stuff out of its back would be very interesting, IMHO - even if it doesn't work out better energy-wise.
Alcubierre drive essentially changes the shape of spacetime, doesn't it?
Much better to have a bunch of one-function packages that you can simply avoid than to have a dead package registry with 1/10 of the useful stuff (so not the one-function packages).
They might be using apps, but my customers don't want to pay for developing for four or more separate platforms (Windows, macOS, Android, iOS - also notice that nobody would develop for Linux), so they solve it by having a single platform - the web. Many of my customers previously had (only) a Windows app but found out that onboarding new customers is much faster (and thus happens more) with web apps.
.NET is dead to me, I simply don't trust the platform/libraries to continue existence and receive updates. Also the JS/NPM ecosystem is much larger and that's truly what's keeping me there.
WPF might be there, but with all the "deprecated - oh not deprecated again - not deprecated but no updates for many years - deprecated again - not deprecated again" cycles I'm not going to touch it with 10-meter pole for anything that I need to support - same with anything else related to .NET.
Also the UI designer experience for WPF is much worse than it used to be with WinForms - so bad I just wrote the code manually, and at that point I can just write HTML/CSS. But perhaps they fixed that - I left .NET in 2015.
It doesn't run in the browser anyways - and the browser is what my customers want, because everyone has a browser, but not everyone has Windows desktop - especially today, when many people don't even own a PC and use something with Android/iOS as their primary computing device.
