And yet multibillion dollar companies whose entire business is illegally running hotels or taxis get nowhere near the vitriol?

Airbnb clearly causes harm for locals in popular tourist cities.

Congress has no electoral mandate to lower inflation, that's not their job.

Using fiscal policy for inflation targeting is crude and horrendously slow.

Really? It seems quite inferior to the one posted and lacking a lot of substance.

No mention of CATL releasing sodium based batteries this year? Just their dropping of lithium battery prices?

Handshake reserved the top 100,000 Alexa domains and allowed all trademark name holders to claim theirs.

Not to mention the ten million in FOSS grants for developers to build tooling

Sadly the ideologues will somehow decry their attempts for an alternative while defending the indefensible ICAAN.

That has absolutely nothing to do with the concept of bluffing. The hand is irrelevant.

Could I recommend a table of contents?

It looks great, bookmarked.

What happens when you fail to pay back loans to western companies? "oh no worries, we'll just write it off and you keep all your assets"?

This handwringing on stuff like this is fairly transparent.

Re:London's Ultra Low Emission Zone to cover entire city on Sunday November 27, 2022 @06:40AM (#33762260)
Owning a car made after 2006 isn't some massive ask, you'll probably find people driving such cars to use public transport far more often anyway.
What do you think the average response was in the West to covid protests last year?

Here in Australia the public and media overwhelmingly despised anyone protesting despite having some of the harshest covid restrictions on Earth.

On the how to avoid section: Isn't running comments through a randomised translator a few times then back considered a countermeasure also?

Also think it's probably poor form to list users as examples without their permission.

Their extrajudicial killings are about sending a message, not stopping one particular person. This is a half century old policy at this point.
> and this guy pulls in front of you

That sounds like your problem, not theirs?

Wasn't this always likely assumed to be some catastrophic space event that just lined up right for us?

On the life speculation part that people enjoy: If you were going to try communicate with the galaxy it seems strange not use an already powerful source in your neighbourhood like a star, then encode your message in blocking that out, perhaps with huge expanding/contracting panels on a satellite.

Tokyo has been growing at a much faster rate than NY or LA.

Like Julian Assange who will be locked up for life with no fair trail due to publishing raw war footage? Or is that different?

> These places aren't buying new cars at all, though.

India ranks 4th worldwide for new car sales and will likely take 3rd place in a year or two.

In Australia the Reserve Bank predicted a fair chance of 40% declines nationwide 2020.

Fast forward two years and house prices are up 30% due to their actions along with government intervention. Hundreds of billions pissed down the drain preventing recession at all costs, with absolutely nothing to show for it.

How long are Western societies willing to kick this can down the road? At some point the youth will riot. It's intergenerational theft plain amd simple.

My ISP injects ads into http sites often.

Now just imagine what this corrupt third world government here can do.

Of course its "not a problem" if you aren't a vulnerable person who dares go against the grain, but on the whole it is.

If your site is not using tls then it's automatically blocked sorry, maybe I'm not your target audience regarding security blogs though :)

Fair call, I stand corrected they have changed it all again.

My information is outdated but only a few years ago required you to sign up for a docker account on win and macos. Please read the SO link.

I've given up on them anyway, the good faith is burnt, it's only one middle management change away from reverting to the bs of last decade.

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/58133878/direct-download...

Not that person above but the install flow for docker is obnoxious on windows and mac.

Having to create an account for open source software isn't reasonable, there's ways around that but not easily for most people.

This is correct, it's why things like solar panels have a surprisingly low albedo despite being mostly black, they are completely flat.
That or you were just straight up wrong and bought into the fantasy that gets played out on HN every month.

Tether was taking other end of bitcoin shorts for 5 years. Its fantastically profitable and you bought the manufactured story that they are about to collapse any moment.

Re:Ask HN: Why can't tax pay for universal basic utilities? on Tuesday August 30, 2022 @01:19AM (#32646875)
Universal healthcare isn't controversial outside of the US.

Who by the way spend far more per person than any other developed country on healthcare, that's both government and consumer spending.

> But with every address you create your daemon has to look for changes there

How exactly do you think this differs from a single address getting updated? On a lite client this is nothing, on a full client nothing has changed.

There's a reason nearly every single solution involves an individual address tied to a single public key.

Re:Tell HN: Heroku alternatives with generous free tiers on Thursday August 25, 2022 @09:57PM (#32602487)
Free phone numbers to receive sms's are ubiquitous. Its trivial to bypass.

Github actions wears the cost as a huge multinational and has anti-abuse mechanisms in place for CI runners but not account signups which again are simple to automate if it means free compute.

None of these things are actual solutions, people abuse free tiers to run cryptominers and commit crime, they don't get dissuaded by that. A CC number is a much more serious threshold that solves nearly all of your problems in a day.
