This will keep all non-subscription software from being sold there for a long time.
I think intel wins longer term too, more competition and diversity will help the d while market (assuming AMD / apple doesn’t make intel go bankrupt)
The tricky part is def the implementation. The question is how to tax billionaires and discourage hoarding of such wealth, and instead encourage spending and investment.
They can be pretty biased though. But good source of a lot of topics and being aware of bias helps since it can't really be eliminated.
How can Facebook be a common carrier when Comcast isn’t? Section 230 seems pretty clear and websites have their own first amendment rights, Government compelling speech seems obviously unconstitutional.
Makes me want to play Bolo somehow.
Re:A request for Pinboard old-timers on Friday February 19, 2021 @10:33PM (#26201261)
I try to not sign up for things where I'd be super sad if I stopped paying and things went away, like old emails on an account I haven't used in ages.

I'm really tempted to do this. I fear there is no going back if I do though. I've been in tight spots financially before so commitment of this kind makes me a bit nervous.

Re:Offbase: Static site generator in a browser on Monday January 25, 2021 @11:42AM (#25905245)
My first thought based on the video is that its serverless, so it can't be deplatformed or taken down, but it does not appear to be the case since you are still hosting it somewhere, so those looking for having a blog that can't be deplatformed will be disappointed. I believe there are other products that DO do that to some extent, though.

However, taking out that premise, it still looks interesting, and I would love to try it out. I tried to get someone on one of the static site generators but just getting everything setup on their computer and then teaching them the needed workflow was not trivial, and not something I would try again with anyone less tech-savvy or without being there with them during setup and teaching. I've seen platforms that simplify, but then you are paying a fee again for that too.

If you figure that out I'd love to know. My company has been moving things to teams and things could be much better.
Re:Ask HN: Which end to end encrypted mail service do you use on Wednesday November 25, 2020 @09:46PM (#25216403)
Does it really matter when 0% of people I email could decrypt it, yet my work uses a "Hipaa" feature for office365 email and though I can send to anyone, zero checks that I'm actually sending to the right person.
One way to record calls is to setup a voip number that you can call and put them on three way conference. Voip.ms makes this easy, I've also done it with Twilio. I also live in a 1 party consent state.
Who is not breaking laws but being shut down?
Sounds to me like a fancy (and attractive) medium to sell gold to people in a way they can't verify anything and there is a huge "markup" on account of production.

So, how do you "add value" to gold? Print it on pretty pieces of paper that are worth at most 50% of what they are sold for. Under the guise of fiat currency being "bad" somehow.

For some reason reading that press release made we want to give money to Mozilla, and made me think about how important it is that there be more than one (all the chrome cousins are practically one) browser.

I do so hope Mozilla survives for many more years.

Don't USA stats at least somewhat disprove the points made?
Re:It's Time to Bust Police Unions on Friday June 05, 2020 @08:52PM (#23435789)
I don't think we should "bust unions", we need to pass laws that hold them accountable and have consequences. Make disciplinary records permanent and on a national registry. Many employees get "points" from getting to work late and fired after too many points. Excessive force should be on this list for police.

Make lying in police reports a crime that results in firing, make not reporting on other cops a crime.

Re:Ask HN: What password manager do you use? on Thursday June 04, 2020 @11:19AM (#23417787)
I've not heard of enpass.io. What are the strengths and are there well researched reviews / security evaluations?
Re:Ask HN: What password manager do you use? on Thursday June 04, 2020 @09:34AM (#23416316)
I am trying to decide between LastPass, Bitwarden and KeePassXC. 99% of passwords in LastPass as I've used it for many years but all my passwords for my most recent job are in KeePassXC (plus some others) and BitWarden beats them both in terms of a few security features (such as 2FA options), plus is cheaper than LastPass.
Re:Ask HN: How do you use GitHub for LaTeX documents? on Friday June 07, 2019 @02:10AM (#20122044)
I use Overleaf + github. Works well. It also supports Dropbox.
It's pretty discriminatory towards disabilities for one thing.

Apple sync?
No, but I want to now.
