Re:Egoless Mathematics in the AI Era on Monday November 02, 2026 @03:36PM (#50343341)
That’s a great paper, I was tripping on these same thoughts last night. The thing that rang true was kind of getting back to these roots, the Philo-Sophia as love of knowledge, and a community that loves knowledge. It doesn’t matter if one guy has a 70 IQ and loves fables, or another is 170 and loves something I can’t comprehend, they are one family. I was as also thinking about old school ideas of wisdom vs plain intelligence. I had this powerful experience during Covid of finding music someone had made from sequencing the DNA of the virus, sitting there sick listening to the virus, singing the song of its people. It struck me that intelligence isn’t something we have, it’s an attribute of nature that can flow through us, something self standing out there. To be able to listen and receive it from nature is the root of learning, while to believe that you have intelligence, not nature, is the root of stupidity. The awareness was something different from anything I had known, I was never smart, I was floating in an ocean of intelligence blocking myself off from receiving by believing I was smart. Whoops! It felt like true wisdom to realize I was stupid and let it flow through me. That was 2020, the seeds of modern AI were planted but I hadn’t seen them, now everybody is grappling with intelligence being “out there” as part of physical nature not even people. The love of Sophia never dies, but we’re being reminded that it’s a receptive relationship we as individuals have with knowledge and humility is the prerequisite, with the humility, the lessons can come from birds or rocks or trees, but we have to realize they matter and we do.
C’mon it’s inspirational. Low level struggling Indian tech recognized by high level Indian CEO and lifted up.
Re:Patrick Stewart has died on Thursday October 29, 2026 @04:38PM (#50295546)
Who could have done that role but Stewart? Take the guy who played Riker or anyone else in that role and you would have lost the flavor. He will be missed.
Wonder why they didn’t run Qwen 3.5 9b on 16th Macs. That’s a super impressive model for size. Is granite better?
It uses sparseness. I noticed a simple thing way back that for a n-boolean variables, the average size of a satisfiable boolean expression must be 2^n bits - basically every binary number that satisfies it listed out. So if a boolean expression of 4 variables is satisfied by 1111, 1110, and 0000, the number denoting it is 1100000000000001, and for every such number there is a boolean expression of 4 variables and for every expression one number of 16 digits. So it’s a fool’s errand to make a universal solver when average inputs scale at 2^n, if a solution exists it has to leverage the small size of the problems we actually care about, sparsity. Based on the AI description that’s what they did, something with polynomials, but it’s too soon. Looking forward to finding out.
Re:Docker Is Weird on Thursday October 22, 2026 @11:28PM (#50204169)
Go has grown too, since 1.25 it knows it’s in a container, uses all cores on CPU for go routines without hiccup.
I always wondered about breaking down the O( n log n) FFT convolution multiplier into truly discrete pieces to see if you can shrink it more, last I checked languages like Python that use big integers still weren’t using it, and when I implemented it it used complex floats. I don’t see why it couldn’t be THE multiplier, plus it works in constant time with optics.
Re:Terence Tao: Math 2.0 [pdf] on Monday October 12, 2026 @01:00AM (#50051562)
No it’s actually shit right now, and what he’s talking about is the solution, needed now.

Seriously if you code, do a Codex (or whatever) project in a language and framework you know nothing about just using AI, no coding. It wows at first but starts diverging more and more from your mental model, until small requests require complete redesign each time and it starts breaking. In other words it happily diverges from human representational understanding of the project, to the point you realize your own requests were contradictory with earlier ones you made, because without the mental model you build of a project by coding it, you don’t track on it, your commands become inconsistent. That’s happening in math, it’s going outside the space of what anyone understands, and so the enrichment of the mathematicians internal model is lost. This road ends in Matrix level total misalignment, humans have to be able to communicate what they will to it, and their will has to be shaped by what is, it’s a back and forth of shaping each others understanding. Without that abundance really is a wire jacked into your skull in a pod.

Competing with Flock for worse name, just as “trafficam” would not enrage sheeple by comparing them to livestock, “AutoOffice” or whatever does not demean them as peons working for a machine.
Re:Shopify moves back to Native from React Native on Thursday September 10, 2026 @11:31AM (#49645482)
This is one of those “oh gosh” posts at first glance, then you actually think about it, and it’s 100% correct. Python, Node exist to save the precious commodity of developer time. Once that’s no longer precious, best value comes from purified custom Rust, no attack surface from huge libraries, optimized performance for the specific task on all possible hardware.
Re:A/I shuts down – Stay human on Sunday September 06, 2026 @01:40PM (#49588888)
It really doesn’t, unless they are screening for terrorism. For instance, a company that provides some free tech for low income Catholics, which ends up used in some crime, maybe bombed family planning clinic, can be charged for the terrorism they didn’t do. In fact, this can be leveraged by anti-Catholic terrorists to take out the Catholic tech service.

It’s the best guy around who tells you when your fly is down, thanks.

I did writing courses as elective in college, the biggest lost truth is that there is no one correct writing style, (you build) being a writer at any capacity means cultivating your own writing voice, (yours) which is an expression of who you are. (voice)

Re:Music Theory for Programmers on Sunday September 06, 2026 @04:03AM (#49584301)
Pretty good, could use more on the tonic, how it’s defined for a diatonic set of 7 notes. The chosen I IV V primary chords are key for that, but a precious tidbit I learned is any of the notes can be set as tonic, but the I IV V chords are only for major and minor. Like for the notes in C major, it becomes A minor with I IV V chords starting off A, but to set the tonic to F, it becomes F Lydian mode with primary chords I, II, and VII. (Fmag, Gmaj, Emin) The rule for the primary chords of the modes is you find the note that differentiates it from the major or minor scale, and pick the chords that have it avoiding the diminished. Playing the notes of c major starting at f, it’s the sharp fourth b that is different, so the primary triads are f-a-c e-g-b and g-b-d.

Oh, and rhythm is just the same as consonance. Most are octave based, beats on wave peaks of overlaid octaves getting quieter. The 3 based on times like 6/8 are the same but for 5ths and 17ths. (The bottom number 8 is just a BPM hint from old days.) beyond those the intervals get unstable feeling, like 7/4 in Money by Pink Floyd has that cut off feeling, someone took a few from each measure, but maps to a minor 7th interval.

People have no idea. They’re destroying old books. Just like the last time (1), and the time before that (2), and the time before that(3), which were:

1) Nazi Germany, following debt/inflationary collapse of Weimar Republic.

2) Bolshevik Revolution, following WWI induced debt collapse of Tsars.

3) French Revolution, following debt collapse of Monarchy.

Now where are we? 40 trillion in debt. The interest is $1.1 trillion the amount added to it yearly is $2.1 trillion. The entirety of a government spending would need to be wiped out just to keep it where it is.

If you had the books that got burned, you’d know the cycle, and the fact that electing democrats isn’t gonna change a damn thing.

Re:It's getting harder to focus every day on Friday July 24, 2026 @07:59PM (#49043056)
Yes. In addition to people faking their mental health diagnoses, you probably also believe Iran will have a nuclear weapon in two weeks and climate change is fake. That’s your weak nature.

Reality? The majority of people are maladapted to the modern world. The macro scale metric? Declining birth rates. As the aging population stops living longer, you’ll see populations collapsing all over the civilized world due to below replacement birth rates that have been happening for years. The only place it’s not happening? Savage Africa, where they just dance, make love, and eat their landlords when they try to collect rent. Populations growing.

The world as it was is what EVERYONE INCLUDING ME IS ADAPTED TO. The world as it is, is an extermination death machine. It’s in the numbers, the only ones smart enough to escape it are our African teachers.

Re:Self-Powered Trailers Promise Leaner Freight Runs on Friday July 24, 2026 @05:24PM (#49041753)
lol! Good point: Really it’s the integrated vehicle components that make motorhomes cost so much more than towables. In trucking, the triples trailers don’t have front axles, they’re added through converter dollies. That’s really all you need to make this work, a motorized steerable converter dolly and you can use it with any existing trailer. It only needs to be able to steer, maybe through combining different wheel speeds. they are basically moving trailers already this way with robot Dollies in China.

Realistically you can digitally tow the trailer at that point, you don’t even need the connection, just the promise the trailer following your tracks and staying close behind.

Re:It's getting harder to focus every day on Friday July 24, 2026 @02:59PM (#49040212)
I was formally diagnosed with ADHD and it continued into adulthood. The only way to suppress it is a diet of raw veggies fruits and meats, combined with like 3 hours of exercise a day and time in nature with silence which my evolutionary ancestors presumably did to survive. The way to make it worse is the combination of sugars, processed foods and flashing stimulus.

Point is I think MOST mental illness is the modern world. If you dumped people with severe depression into their ancestors supposedly worse lives 6,0000 years ago, hunting with tribe and sleeping under starry sky, they’d be fine.

Re:Self-Powered Trailers Promise Leaner Freight Runs on Thursday July 23, 2026 @09:37PM (#49030309)
This would be based on a different wheel configuration. The control shaft fixed to the car essentially works to steer a pair of front wheels, and may steer back wheels to minimize off tracking.
Re:Self-Powered Trailers Promise Leaner Freight Runs on Thursday July 23, 2026 @09:32PM (#49030277)
Yeah, driving semi on tight two lane roads there’s be a whip cracking sound when we passed by other semis close, the two air vortexes colliding.

But I think it’s surmountable. Someone in this thread joked you could put the steering wheel in the RV, which is of course done, so really it’s just a question of RV motion not compatible with car. I could imagine problems with this, if the stopping distance of the RV is higher as it is in loaded semis, you need a feedback mechanism to the car not destroy the brakes of the car, same with pulling. Really the advantages are too high, solar charging, weeks of battery, ability to slow move with no car, but no restraints of being a motor vehicle.

Re:Self-Powered Trailers Promise Leaner Freight Runs on Monday July 20, 2026 @02:40AM (#48975034)
In the US, commercial trailers are used like these crappy sheds, you go get one and the ABS unit is gone, the only thing worth stealing. For any company where this doesn’t hold it’s a big deal. The bigger deal is really RV trailers. You power assist, with simple motors controlled by pulling, and you can pull a huge one with ANY car, you don’t need truck, just modified mirrors. Plus the RV trailer benefits from slow self movement and power wall when disconnected. Total off grid tiny home.

AI could largely do that.
Re:Global warming has accelerated significantly on Friday March 06, 2026 @02:56PM (#47280259)
I’ve heard hints of this same thing, the rates are described as quadratic, not linear. The feedback mechanisms I do not know, but it’s something related to a high degree of released ocean warming that was stored.
