The story of Rome’s fall is both complicated and relatively straightforward yet it eerily resembles America: The state became too big and chaotic; the influence of money and private interests corrupted public institutions; and social and economic inequalities became so large that citizens lost faith in the system altogether and gradually fell into the arms of tyrants and demagogues. If all of that sounds familiar, well, that’s because the parallels to our current political moment are striking. Edward Watts, a historian at the University of California San Diego, has just published a new book titled Mortal Republic that carefully lays out what went wrong in ancient Rome — and how the lessons of its decline might help save fledgling republics like the United States today.
This is leftist propaganda. Increasing minimum wage pushes more people into poverty. The majority of people in poverty vote left.
Why does increasing minimum wage push more people in poverty?
Because an increase in expenses does not guarantee an increase in revenue. If your expenses increase while your revenues remain stagnant, you have to decrease your expenses in order to stay cash flow positive. To compensate, you decrease the number of hours employees receive. Less hours translate into less employees required. When the people who are earning minimum wage can't find a job because of the lack of hours available or can't receive enough hours from their employer, they are falling into poverty.
Surprise, state monopoly wants to keep their monopoly.
Reduces taxes. Problem solved.
Thanks for your input. Often critical people mean the best despite coming off as mean. That said, I think it is best if you are close with these people first so you know they mean the best. I don't think it's natural for individuals to recognize when someone means well but is coming off as rude, particularly when rudeness is defined differently for everyone.
For the unversed, my family's dinners can come off as abrasive. The reality is we just enjoy talking to each other in an uncivilized manner.
So women blame others and men take responsibility?
Thornberg skipped ECON101.
I don’t understand this line of thinking. My father worked a minimum wage job most of his life and was able to retire a multi-millionaire simply because he saved and invested his disposable income. Most people can become wealthy but they choose to drive fancy cars and go to the movie theaters instead then complain how unlucky they are. That’s simply not true. If people are lucky because they realized wealth was attainable then yes, the most successful people are lucky.
Start-up and entrepreneurial related questions like these don’t get asked enough here. Thank you
Ireland is looking really nice now
Did anyone else watch the recent South Park episode? I think it illuminates this matter rather nicely.
Yes. The article and others fail to recognize that in practice, some customers cost more than they're worth.
It's sad to watch a device that was once a serious innovation slowly become another gizmo.
Government says it's ok for Johnson and Johnson to sell opioids. Government waits until the shit hits the fan then says, "Hey you shouldn't have sold those opioids! Hey everyone, can you believe this big company is selling opioids?!" What a joke.
At this point, it’s time to finally quit YT.
Working conditions a century ago were very different than they are today. Worker protections were initiated to balance the scales between employees and employers. Since then, living conditions have improved ten-fold. The gig economy is an effective solution that supports both employees and employers. The economy would be performing less optimally without it.
And people who buy from the rest of us
The reason I enjoy making money is because I think of it as creating value for others. For some reason, I just enjoy creating value for others.
Didn't realize requiring a separate 8 square meter space to prepare salad was for saving the environment.
Voluntary departure rate at Netflix was 3% in 2017 compared to the US average of 18%. Sounds like this firing model people fear should actually be mass reproduced.
Kudos to Netflix for effective practices.
