I remember the "Best view in Chrome" notices that I get today browsing Japanese web sites. It is already a problem and I have to spoof the browser agent for some web sites to get around Javascript blocks that only allow Chrome through.
Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026) on Monday September 14, 2026 @09:11PM (#49706490)
I'm working on Umamo(https://www.umamo.org/)! It's FOSS cross-platform rigging editor for 2D puppet animation built as a drop-in replacement for the Live2D Cubism Editor. It's fully compatible with Live2D's CMO3 and MOC3 file formats so it works within the existing Cubism market share.

Live2D is the company that makes the editor and runtime for many game and vtuber(virtual YouTuber) applications. They have a monopoly on the market and I want to change that. Their application is slow, buggy, and a monthly paid subscription to keep using it along with perpetual licensing costs to use the runtime.

Umamo is in the early alpha stage right now, but I'm planning for a Christmas release of an end user workable experience.

I'm preparing the v0.3.0 release today. It's a big release that adds the full pipeline for ingesting layered artwork, texture atlas packing and editing, and more.

Working for Wikimedia would make me actually consider moving back to the USA for the opportunity.(I'm in Japan for reference.) I previous contributed to Mediawiki and the extensions ecosystem for about a decade.

Blatant about what? I actually own this tablet and I bought it for reading sheet music and doodling.(Also for Android development for a project that I'm working on.)

The Eva interface is pretty cool, but it is not worth what I paid for it. I would recommend people look for other options or maybe wait for something better to come out.

Re:Anime User Interfaces on Saturday August 01, 2026 @09:39PM (#49140239)
I own this tablet: For the Japanese price, it is worth it to buy it for the bundled accessories.

The tablet itself: Other than the screen and APU being good, it is a heavily stripped down tablet missing a lot of the features that other tablets in its price range or even cheap tablets will have. No haptics, biometrics, and so on. It is very focused on the screen interaction experience and that is basically it.

> Most Linux package managers cannot separate user-installed packages from system packages.

And because of pinning versions to LTS releases on certain Linux distributions many times those packages stay out of date for years. Which is quite annoying.

My use cases:

* Replacement controller for my UFO Catcher - It has WiFi, easy to update, and I can operate the machine remotely with it. It's bolted to the back of small touchscreen that lets me change the machine settings as well.

* Remote printer access - I can monitor from the USB cameras and gather statistics about the prints.(I suspect a lot of 3D printing enthusiasts use them for this purpose.)

Having a small low power computer has been useful for me in those instances.

Change the audio language to "English descriptive".
The font size on this site is massive and zooming out causes the font to resize back to the same massive font size.

Why?! ;_;

I have four Prusa printers for my business with thousands of hours of print time. The worst issue that I have had is a finicky filament sensor that I temporarily disabled until I could fix it.

I see it as buying printers design for industrial usage versus printers for hobby. Prusa is selling me a tool that just works every time.

Issues and PRs are available to open.(I just have not gotten any yet.)

> Any idea why your script does not seem to flag as a valid greasemonkey script when I try to use it in the Falkon (KDE) browser?

Honestly, no idea. I have only tested it with Tampermonkey on Firefox. Manually installing it should still work.

> Not necessarily? There was a post just a year ago on how somebody jailbroke the kindle books from the web UI.

I used that research to build something similar. It only works for manga and comics right now, but I have been tinkering with implementing glyph support as well to be able to handle full books.

https://github.com/Alexia/kandle-downloader

The original research is here, but the web site is down right now. https://blog.pixelmelt.dev/kindle-web-drm/

Add Mailchimp in there as well. I have never gotten an email from someone using Mailchimp that was not spam.
I have compensated hundreds to thousands of dollars to content creators to promote my products and have had content creators ask for thousands up front. It really depends on channel size and market. It also depends on what deliverables are being asked for. Logo on screen, 30 second advertisement reading, link in description, pinned comments, accompanying social media post, etc. Some content creators will haggle on all the pieces while others will accept a flat rate for a typical package deal of deliverables.

GPU hardware accelerated encoding/decoding is only in the paid version as well.
Using Gemini 3 Pro Preview, it told me in mostly polite terms, that I'm a fucking idiot. Like I would expect a close friend to do when I'm going about something wrong.

ChatGPT with the same prompt tried to do whatever it would take to please me to make my incorrect process work.

Re:Firefox Getting New Controls to Turn Off AI Features on Tuesday February 03, 2026 @12:26AM (#46866867)
Then for some web sites it won't matter and display the dominant language of the country that you're accessing from. My Firefox sends US English as the only preferred language, but a ton of US tech companies default to showing web sites in Japanese without a way to change it because I access them from Japan. It's pretty typical of American companies that don't understand localization and accessibility.
Re:Proton Spam and the AI Consent Problem on Friday January 23, 2026 @02:26PM (#46736661)
Can you fix the fact that this new email spam category was added and that I was automatically opted into receiving it without my consent? That's fucked. I'm a paying customer and I keep getting advertisements in the Proton desktop applications for various things.(Black Friday deals, other stuff.) I should never see these advertisements if I'm paying you.
> This is particularly true for the visually impaired and some elderly and neuro-atypical people.

The Slack and (Google) Photos icons on Android look so visually similar in the sea of green, blue, red, and yellow icons on Android that I frequently open the wrong application. Using my phone sucks.

Re:iPad Pro with M5 chip on Wednesday October 15, 2025 @12:57PM (#45595439)
I have an iPad Mini. I got it mainly for studying and reading. However, it also has become great for being an instrumentalist. I can toss it in my bag, setup it up with the folding case for sheet music, tuning, and everything else. It saves me from having to carry my sheet music books, tuner, and other bits around.
There are bunch of A&W restaurants in Okinawa as well and as far as I know, it's popular.
I just returned something on AliExpress last week.(Wrong items sent.) Sagawa showed up at my door to collect the package, I paid nothing, and AliExpress refunded me before it even left the country once Sagawa notified them that the package was collected.

So it really depends where you live.

> In addition, the annoyance of these gates comes from having to fiddle with the wallet, etc. in order to find the card or the phone, or the fact that multiples tries may be required for the reader to actually read it;

The NFC readers on the gates in Japan will read cards from several centimeters away. My phone, which has Osaifu-Keitai setup, can be left in my bag and I just wave my bag over the reader as I walk by. It is incredibly rare for a misread to occur. They just work.

It needs to be closer to where the acronym is first introduced. The definition, on my screen, is below the fold so it can not be seen in context of where the acronym is first introduced. If it was defined below the title, I would understand.

* https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/abbreviati...

* https://www.stylemanual.gov.au/grammar-punctuation-and-conve...

* https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/style-guide/acronyms

I do a lot of copy editing for clarity and non-native speakers so I have keep these things in mind. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Re:I ruined my vacation by reverse engineering WSC on Monday May 12, 2025 @03:38AM (#43960502)
Thank you for the help. It is really frustrating when authors do not define an acronym when it is first introduced in the text.
> They have a terrible naming history.

I just read the entire article being a bit confused and it wasn't until I read here that I realized that the name of the replacement application is "Windows App".

Why?!

Re:AnimeJs v4 Is Here on Thursday April 03, 2025 @01:30PM (#43572887)
It responds to the scrolling, leaving agency to the user, instead of hijacking scrolling, that steal agency from the user, that some web sites do. It's so much better of a solution and friendly to accessibility.

The technology can absolutely be better. When I worked retail over two decades ago those scanners were fast and I can scan back to back with no noticeable delay.

I bought my Sunbeam in 2022 for $44, brand new. The secret is to buy them in Japan off the flea market sites. Apparently in my case the owner bought it have around as a piece of Americana. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
