VelkaMorava

Okay. You know Svitavy?

I thought so, because it's a small city in the Czech republic. There are about 5 guys there which have bussineses in various sectors. They all know each other. If you screw up badly in one job, you are not gonna get hired anywere.

"But why won't you move to Prague?" you ask. Because in Svitavy you get about 13-15k CZK netto/month. Rent in Prague for a reasonable studio apartment is about 11-12k (for reference - 9k for rent + 2,5k for utilities - https://www.sreality.cz/detail/pronajem/byt/1+kk/praha-kobyl...). Realistically the apartment is gonna be higher than that, because there are already 50 people who are willing to pay more than the said 9k for the linked one. You need about 4k a month for food. 500 CZK for phone + internet if you are cheap etc.

So in my example scenario, let's say you are saving 1k while in Svitavy, which is about right. You can't just go to Prague for job interview during your day job at a sweat shop. After a year you are gonna have 3/4 of living costs in Prague. If you are anything else than a programmer or IT guy, you are not gonna find a job in 2-3 months, possibly 6.

So unless you inherit something or take a loan to risk it all, you are stuck in Svitavy. Have a bit more empathy, nextlevelpíčo.

aCtUaLlY...

dude be a bit empathetic. Some people might have relatives they have to take care of, and are unwilling to downgrade their job by multiple levels, hence the commute. Others might have children with friends in local school - sure, they can move, but it's the last resort.

I sincerely hate you libertariantsy types. Your attitude works when you are 25-30 with no kids and distant family. And you know what fascinates me? Having remote/in office work be optional, this doesn't impact you in any way. I can happily live without commute, you can go to office for all I care.

I got the same feelings. From the article:

> January 29, early: there's this team that nominally owns dashboards, and they got wind of us wanting a dashboard. They want to be the ones to do it, so we meet with them to convey the request.

> January 29, late: asked "dashboard team" manager if they had been able to get the network stuff talking to our server yet via chat. No reply.

Am I the only one to think this is completely unreasoanble to message the other team later that day? I mean it's not as if I am sitting and dangling my legs waiting for a Karen to come, drop everything I do and do her dashboard. They might have had stuff planned for weeks/months in advance...

Someone: wield extremely disproportionate political power.

You: House owners don't have any additional political power than renters.

Me: one dude has 67 properties and connections to political elite, so he probably has more political power than renters. Implicitly: chances are the entire political system amassed a huge amount of properties, and are in one bed with prominent businessmen, who have the capital to acquire even more properties than said politicians.

You: u R M0v1nG tHe gO4lPoStS. You are a clown xD

I have listened to quite a lot of his podcasts. There are times where he is straight up wrong and hiding behind the "I am just a guy asking questions" facade. You know what's even more tiring than "haters"? Fanbois who refuse to admit their idol might have a few flaws...
One Czech ex-minister of health owns 67 properties. So he probably has a lot of acquintances and relatives among the political elite of my country. To me it seems he has more political power than me, a dude sitting in underwear and ranting on Hackernews.
Re:Missile Base for Sale on Saturday August 28, 2021 @02:39PM (#28340390)
That's what you get when your social security and education policy is Hunger Games equivalent in the Middle East. Exporting democracy one bomb at a time.
Well, the US and Europe call themselves capitalist, yet there are huge barriers to enter some of the fields (e.g. in the Czech Republic the number of mobile operators is defined by law, essentially a state-imposed oligopol). Useless regulations (primarily EU), trade embargos, huge subsidies to companies which don't need them, absurd patents (my favourite one being Apple patenting the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners)...

So now what?

During that episode I have came to conclusion that Bill Burr is who Joe Rogan sees as himself. Eloquent, humorous, says-he's-stupid-but-he-is-actually-smart, able to step back and look at all the stupid stuff everyone does (including himself).

Except Rogan is actually this: https://www.reddit.com/r/JoeRogan/comments/8xofvi/joe_rogan_...

Jesus christ HN. Not everyone is an IT guy with comfortable salary. Some people have families or other roots they don't want to severe, or lack the money and useful skills to move...
Funny how the incriminating album cover is a prophetic message in itself; the person portrayed on it chasing after money.

On one hand I get it, he didn't consent and what not. But the guy is 30. Why didn't he sue 10 years ago? I have feeling it's because he's trying to ride the wave of political correctness and cancel culture...

Cold fusion is coming in the next 30 years starting from datetime.now()

I wonder where "a country road with no lanes which barely fits 1.5 car in winter in the Czech republic" is on your scale... Something like this, just imagine the snowdrifts around it https://www.google.com/maps/@49.080269,16.4569252,3a,75y,307...

Right wing is a legit political stance. If you want to see what world would look like without people with political views differing yours, my woke comrade, move to North Korea or Eastern Europe circa 1948-1989. You'll see what an amazing world leftist-only ideologies create. Especially when you won't be able to study at university because one of your parents is not member of the Party and listens to Free Europe.

Re:Google found guilty of infringing Sonos patents on Monday August 23, 2021 @05:06AM (#28273683)
Great. Apple patented a rectangle (https://www.theverge.com/2012/11/7/3614506/apple-patents-rec...), some dude patented a way to update a sports game (https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/01/january-stupid-patent-...). I am not even getting into the whole patent trolling and companies suing each other because they are infringing upon each other's patents and then settling.

But no, for all the evil patents are we must have them, because some guy found a new way to make milk foam. Jesus ducking christ hacker news, this is almost as funny as Paul Graham writing an essay about why VC is great.

How? Because I for sure don't want to spend my time in a room with people I have never seen. The more you pay me, the higher my tolerance for bulls..., I don't care about anything else.

> If you have nothing good to say - don't say anything.

I can't describe how incredibly stupid this is. This is peak dystopia. An absurd example from history - "maybe we should rethink the Inquisition, no? They are kidnapping and torturing people based on no evidence" "Don't be a downer!".... "Let's brainstorm on this religion thing a bit with its pointless wars, flying airplanes into buildings and killing people?" "If you don't have anything good to say, don't."

Now - Matrix and Signal exists, but it takes two to tango. If you have no one to message there, because everybody uses iMessage/WhatsApp/Messenger, you are screwed.

Open source phones and PCs exist, but they are much more expensive for the same configuration and the open source software has its own problems. Just look at the whole Linux landscape. I just looked up System76 laptop with i7, 8 GB RAM and 240 GB SSD - it comes out at 1300 dollars. That's more than the brutto average wage in my country for the same configuration that costs about 700 dollars if you buy from mainstream brands.

I got disillusioned with open source when I tried connecting an iPhone to Linux. This is what it looks like in 2021 - https://itsfoss.com/iphone-antergos-linux/ . Full of esoteric terminal commands which operate a program written by some dude from who knows where with no guarantees what it really does, because I am not gonna bother learning about iPhone+Linux+USB delicacies enough to understand that code.

So in my opinion, it's easier to actually regulate the big corp overlords.

What is basic economics for you? The supply and demand model which only works if you assume 2 to 10 things (depending on the author), where atleast 1 of them is completely irrational or doesn't reflect reality?
That's a big assumption when the ex-president of the US got banned from Twitter.
Re:Benefits of Not Using an IDE on Sunday August 22, 2021 @02:25AM (#28263371)
This is truly a HackerNews moment. IDEs bring optional usefull stuff you can ignore if you want. Yet here in comments we have autists arguing that using IDEs (=option stuff you can ignore) is bad vs using their favourite 40 year old text editor in terminal. Jesus christ you people are funny.
I'll tell you a secret. Game theory and economics is mostly voodoo wrapped up in statistical mumbo-jumbo. In other words, if economists could explain what is happening, why are they poor and have to go to work to make living?
> No, but if I have to choose one, I'm not choosing the one that believes in Satanic pedophile cults and Jewish space lasers, and that gathers neo-nazis like flies, so simple math says I have to choose the other one until my country gives me a viable option besides "lesser of two evils."

Good luck waiting for a viable option. Edit: just realized, not sure if by the satanic pedophile cults you meant the Clintons. You know, the war hawk lady who laughs at videos of beheading while parodying Gaius Julius, one of the biggest mass murderers in history. And the current president, who sniffs children and incestously kisses their grandchildren.

As an outsider, politics in the US is complete shit, maybe instead of participating in tribalism of one side vs another you should seek out ways to hard-reset the system and introduce more political parties, as is common in Europe.

> Well, for one thing, you're confusing the laws of those countries and extremist groups with the terms of service of social media platforms. Twitter isn't beheading anyone, and Facebook isn't sending anyone to concentration camps, so attempts to draw some kind of equivalence between them and totalitarian regimes don't really work.

The end result for me as a user is the same. What's the difference between Facebook and Twitter voluntarily censoring any mention of Tommy Robinson and China censoring anything mentioning Tommy Robinson? In one case its authoritation government doing it, in the other it's some sleazy multinational corp with way too much power doing it. "gO StArT YoUr OwN pLaTfOrM"...

Now tell me, I saw you in a few threads already, usually arguing leftist talking points. Are you an astroturfer? The reason I am here wasting my time writing something that will go completely over you just to get back a response that dismantles my post pedantically point by point is that unfortunately USA exports a lot of stuff. We started getting the BLM/MeToo stuff in Europe too and it's completely absurd.

Re:The 'Great Resignation' is really the 'Great Discontent' on Tuesday August 10, 2021 @03:36PM (#28133198)
> Care to explain how I'm paying for the "very wealthy, celebrities, and so on"?

Sure.

1) Look at financial crisis of 2008 and the banks bail out. I have always been taught there is no such thing as a free lunch in economics. Well, apparently you can overleverage yourself, profit insanely on it and when it finally goes tits up, you cry a bit and yell "too big to fail". I have always been taught that risk is the basic principle of capitalism. If your idea or product is bad, no one gives you money for it, you run out of money and go bankrupt. Obviously not if you are a bank or military contractor (looking at you, Boeing).

2) One of the biggest company in my country, owned by our current prime minister Andrej Babiš... oh sorry, it is owned by 2 trust funds which are indirectly owned by Babiš. Anyway, that company is currently asking for 123 million CZK in subsidies. This is a company with a turnover of 161 billion and 3,8 billion CZK profit. Why are they asking for subsidies? Can't they use ~3,24% of their last year's profit?

3) Continuation of previous point, except in US terms. You can strong arm government into giving you subsidies, otherwise you are gonna leave the city / state / country and it's gonna lose jobs. See here for examples: https://subsidytracker.goodjobsfirst.org/top-100-parents

One of the biggest recipients is Tesla. On this note I find it absurd that tax money collected from normal people is paying for a billionaire's wet dream. Notice how I said normal people. Because the rich have ways to steal... damn, sorry - evade... dang, I did it again. Avoid taxes is what I meant. https://itep.org/55-profitable-corporations-zero-corporate-t...

4) Look at coronavirus V-shaped recovery. It was apparent airlines are gonna be in a bit of a trouble, becaues of the... oh yeah, the global pandemic which put lockdowns in place. Anyway, airlines bought back stock and then asked for bailouts. Which they of course got. https://www.dallasnews.com/business/airlines/2020/03/18/amer...

I have stopped caring for explaining how you are paying for the very wealthy. If these examples above didn't sway you, nothing will.

> I assume the same about Parler but I don't know, since I don't have an account. Both still seem popular with Trumpists, QAnon and the alt-right

I asked some other dude on this website - do you really want a country with one party in the control of everything (Congress, presidency, governors...)?

I am not from the US, but this is so bizzare to watch. Half of your country voted for Trump, and you just hand-wave them away as "Trumpists" as if they were nutjobs who should be censored. That's half the country which opinions you have just dismissed.

> And if having to abide by the terms of service of app stores, social media platforms, ISPs and the actual laws of the land are too "Communist", there's an entire dark web out there that will let anyone do or say just about anything.

Funny how no one mentions this in posts about China, North Korea, Iran, Syria or Daesh. They have just set their own rules, why should they be labeled as tyranical or authoritatian countries?

Yes, they are running in the same sense that Xerox is a modern prosperous company and not a shadow of its former glory. It's beyond me how normal people push for centralized monopolies that can end you on a whim.

I have written a long-ish post but deleted it. I just wanna say this new left-capitalist doctrine really scares me. Communism all over again except instead of woke comrades at the Central committee censoring things we got young programmer thought police at trillion dollar companies cancelling you over usage of "blacklist", "master" or not respecting preferred pronouns in a git repo or email.

Don't worry, I'll check my privileges to become sufficiently woke and be a plus plus good warrior for justice.
