If it does it will be at the hands of another human.

AI to me is like the Nuclear race again. Super powers will be using it as a super weapon. I don't think AGI will wipe us out by itself.

Re:Lotus Notes and the dangers of starting from scratch on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @07:12AM (#49624555)
Lotus Notes was underrated imo.

We used it as a combo Helpdesk ticketting, email, wiki/doc tool and it worked so well. It took 20 years for other tools to catch up and webapps still arent as functional.

placebo works whether you believe or not and even if you know.

They are very powerful.

obviously a small space-time anomaly. Nothing to be alarmed about. Sapphire and Steel have been assigned.

Re:Pyodide: a Python distribution based on WebAssembly on Tuesday March 17, 2026 @04:28AM (#47409957)
The who python web feels underused to be honest.

Maybe if browsers start shipping or downloading WASMs for python and others on request. And storing them for all sites going forward. Similar to how uv does it for for venvs it creates, there are standalone python version blobs.

There might be a foodchain of lower order uses when they become "obsolete".

For you it was the most important day of your life. But for ChatGPT it was Tuesday.
Re:Windows Notepad App Remote Code Execution Vulnerability on Wednesday February 11, 2026 @09:11AM (#46975141)
Bare with me, but im not again' the new Notepad. Its fairly well done - the markdown - and even the AI dropdown presets seem useful.

but I do wish they had called it something else and kept notepad as txt only.

Even a colour filter would help with the harshness.
One of the others might make an exception to allow them in theirs.

I love ideas like this.

I'd like to see the stats on temperature levels over a lifetime.

Pixel 5 is a nice size. I like smallies too.
Anesthetics are very weird though. There's still a lot we don't know about how they work. They seem to act like you experienced, complete shutdown, for most people, which seems different from the states that people go into when unconscious or are near death usually.

And some people have a very different experience while under them - they are fully aware.

The only issue with Ventoy is it doesn't work with secure boot turned on.

Otherwise its excellent.

Re:Keep Android Open on Thursday October 30, 2025 @11:38AM (#45761239)
So much rarer now. Its getting more and more locked down unfortunately.
Re:Study finds growing social circles may fuel polarization on Thursday October 30, 2025 @11:37AM (#45761227)
Its not my area, but apart from the the person subjective opinion there would be indirect ways to measure it. again I'm just guessing without looking around.
Re:Keep Android Open on Thursday October 30, 2025 @11:36AM (#45761206)
yup it will, but this is where some legislation might help to get certified 3rd party ROM images that will pass. Its a tricky topic though.
Re:Keep Android Open on Thursday October 30, 2025 @11:35AM (#45761196)
It does vary. TWRP/Magisk can enable apps, but its case by case.
Re:Study finds growing social circles may fuel polarization on Wednesday October 29, 2025 @07:03AM (#45745192)
I'd assume this was measure previously, maybe im wrong, but it seems like something you could and would have been measured in the past.
Re:Keep Android Open on Wednesday October 29, 2025 @06:09AM (#45744778)
That might get you root but not a bootloader unlock.
Re:Keep Android Open on Wednesday October 29, 2025 @06:07AM (#45744770)
Banks are all moving to MFA through an app, which then needs play protect, which then maybe need TWRP/Magisk.
Re:Keep Android Open on Wednesday October 29, 2025 @06:05AM (#45744758)
Secure boot and OEM bootloader unlock should be able to work with images so you can lock a phone after the upgrade again.

I managed to get a US refubished Pixel 2 somehow with a fuselocked bootloader here in Ireland. I bought it second hand but I've no idea how it got that way. But I'm suck on the Pixel image and I wanted to use it for ROM testing etc.

Re:Keep Android Open on Wednesday October 29, 2025 @06:02AM (#45744741)
I just wish they had two sizes, a pocket version please. I have small Trumpian hands.
Re:Keep Android Open on Wednesday October 29, 2025 @06:01AM (#45744732)
Would that have really stoped google having its own cloud/app layer on top of the base system? OEM could still lock the bootloaders.

Unless, maybe the EU, enforce a right to repair and tinker we'll be at the mercy of these companies with their walled gardens.

Re:Study finds growing social circles may fuel polarization on Tuesday October 28, 2025 @06:41AM (#45731186)
Yeah I'd like to see a follow up with the depth of friendships compared with pre-social media ones.
I'm watching videos of ICE kidnapping a woman and her kids while shes in their school, to be brought to god knows where, that would not look out of place in the 1930s.

When you have a full time secret police that wanders the streets kidnapping people, yeah that has a chilling effect, people want to keep their heads down.

And its tricky, because they will ignore the huge protests, and they want some sort of armed or civil disobedience when it comes to their secret police because they are looking for excuses to label them Antifa terrorists and escalate.

I don't see the obvious play here for Americans looking to fight this. Maybe the Midterms could help, maybe if enough local action, maybe the US to too big to cow like that, maybe the blue states have enough independence to survive the federal overreach, maybe Trump dies and MAGA dies with him.

It is literally quid pro quo right now. you have to play the game and I don't blame them as such.

But PSF doing this and not playing the game is really awesome. I just hope they can fund themselves through other means.

EU should be stepping up more with funding for projects like this as a replacement for US tech. Major secure reliable funding for open source projects that EU infrastructure can be built on would only increase our independence.

Re:Greenland Ditches Starlink for French Satellite Service on Wednesday October 22, 2025 @04:24AM (#45666242)
There was an illusion you could trust certain countries, political institutions and, for some bizarre reason, certain billionaires-cum-oligarchs.

Recent upheavals and actions have really pushed people to question exactly who and what you can trust.

Also the recent focus on strategic elements with regard to globalisation also plays into these choices now - where it might have been dismissed a couple of years ago.
