You could let Google fail.

Today they are on top, but if Automotive is any indication, Google will soon struggle

Do Pixel count? But I'm anti Google now, I have not researched in a few years.

Apple slows down old phones, no one gives 5 years of support.

They did break into the phone. So Apple completely failed.

Weird narrative here.

Red flag here. You should take a marketing class.
I had an iPhone for work and it basically solidified the fact that Apple products are low quality.

I didn't see any benefits at all. Only annoyances.

I don't actually believe your story the way you told it. Was her Android a 50 dollar piece of Chinese junk or Samsung? Only way I could believe it.

I've done price comparisons and CVS is hands down the worst price for anything.

The only reason you go to CVS, is if you have 0 other options.

While I blame the various medical cartels for making healthcare unaffordable by bribing (Lobbying) hundreds of millions of dollars to politicians- can the customer be blamed for negligence?

Reminds me of the Coronavirus lockdown. Save 0.5% of the sickest/old/obese people, cause the 99.5% to develop drug addictions, suicide, riot, undergo domestic abuse, disrupt supply chain, shortages, etc...

But look, we flattened the curve!

Re:Ask HN: How do you organise your files and folders? on Wednesday June 03, 2020 @04:45PM (#23408482)
Side note, years ago I organized decades of hard drives, this found clips of my baby siblings playing with microphones and old video games.

I went through literally every folder. Took probably 20 hours.

Wondering if I could simplify this with python. Eliminating generic program files, but keeping all user data. The goal wouldn't be perfection but to take that 20 hours and turn it into 5 hours.

Does this exist in any capacity right now?

Re:Google sued for secretly amassing vast trove of user data on Wednesday June 03, 2020 @01:03PM (#23405738)
This is the problem with laws, especially when the company that it's supposed to regulate is a top 20 lobbyist/briber.
Re:Google sued for secretly amassing vast trove of user data on Wednesday June 03, 2020 @01:02PM (#23405728)
Regulations don't make the problem go away.

In fact, it's more likely Google will use the regulation to corner the market with regulatory capture.

Re:Software Engineering Within SpaceX on Wednesday June 03, 2020 @12:34PM (#23405352)
What has it settled to? Html, css and JavaScript?

Btw if you consider that, there are wars over which JavaScript framework.

Re:Software Engineering Within SpaceX on Wednesday June 03, 2020 @12:32PM (#23405330)
As someone that works in Auto on buttons and works with the head unit team, you are incorrect.

The benchmarking shows nearly every company is moving to screens. Sure you might have a few models that remove the screen, but these are cheap cars with limited features.

You literally can't have a button for every car feature.

And if your car doesn't have all the features, you won't sell well.

And if you disagree with all of this, you probably aren't the type of person to drop 40k-50k on a new car. You'd be happy with a 2014 car for 10k.

I found it quite difficult to outsource Engineering work to Engineers in another country.

It might be a cultural thing, but issues I've ran into- Slow/low prioritization, no movement unless you follow up often, lack of experience.

Don't get me wrong, I can be lazy too. But when things are outsourced it's really hard to keep positive relations and get stuff done on time with high quality.

Because fraudulent people don't actually provide value, where coinbase needs to confirm identity.
I'm totally with you on this. People pay other money to prepare food?

It's not trivial either, restaurant food is 7 to 20x more expensive than home cooked (source- Efficiency Is Everything)

The only other business model for a restaurant is to sell drugs(aka alcohol and caffeine). Then your business model exploits customer addictions.

I think we've spent far too much money/resources/manpower on lazy food habits.

Re:Tor Browser 9.5 on Tuesday June 02, 2020 @04:29PM (#23395945)
Say you did 5 vpns, you'd need all 5 companies to respond correct?

I imagine you could pick a few Anti US government VPNs and at least 1 wouldn't cooperate.

Today Candy, tomorrow stomach ache.
Disagree here. Traditional Media MIGHT let a politician lie, with a mention of the incorrectness during the article/segment.

But a politician having unfettered access to provide propaganda is not allowing leadership, if anything it's getting closer to single party control.

Re:Tor Browser 9.5 on Tuesday June 02, 2020 @01:09PM (#23393346)
I understand the concept of Tor but since the government is actively watching, it doesn't really fit the usecase if I understand correctly.

From a privacy point of view, couldn't you use multiple VPNs?

>It just seems the more we learn in this field the more it shows us what we don't know.

I think the root issue is that Medical treatment existed before the scientific method. This creates a huge industrial debt of "doing things the old way" and relying on authority/tradition.

I can only imagine deregulation is the solution. At least in the United States, medical is run by various cartels/factions. It would be nice to have input from scientists rather than authority.

You act like stereotypes are completely inaccurate.

Do Apple users generally care about open source? Do they care about quality hardware? Are Apple users Nerds?

Sure you can find an exception, but when you compare to the majority of users, you can find similarities.

Re:Do I need to go to university? on Monday June 01, 2020 @08:59AM (#23377926)
I have projects that people consider impressive already. Here is what I've been told from various managers-

>Only hire computer scientists

>I don't have relevant work experience (which means taking a 60k/yr web dev job to begin my career?)

>My projects are good, but I need to contribute to open source projects.

The reason for the degree is to get access to high quality programming jobs rather than 60k/yr web dev. Not to mention, I imagine I'll learn everything about security and algorithms which I'm sure are weaknesses.

Re:Do I need to go to university? on Monday June 01, 2020 @06:21AM (#23377000)
30 year old here, I'm considering a new degree in computer science to add to my chem Engineering degree. I have 12 years casual programming experience.

My work experience has been design Engineering, which is a low 6 figure job. I also live in an area with an old industry that's getting Engineers outsourced.

I'm considering a comp sci degree so I can get into embedded, or electrical engineering, AI, or pretty much any 180k/yr job. I'm okay with taking a pay cut for a few years.

Re:Zero-day in Sign in with Apple on Saturday May 30, 2020 @03:22PM (#23363853)
I'm not sure if Apple ever had quality.

They are the Nintendo of Computing. They have some novelties, but in general they are average at their best. Notice that both Nintendo and Apple are big advertisers.

Re:Walmart says it will discontinue Jet on Tuesday May 19, 2020 @08:54AM (#23234307)
I never knew of this, I end up using Walmart online more often than Amazon now.

Amazon is just too expensive.

I'm not a fan of censorship at any level. But at least you can always have Android users install themselves.

Sure you don't get their massive advertising platform Play Store. But that's Google's decision.

You can organically develop users, you don't need Google.

Good news, it's not Apple, so you can still easily download and install the app.

The bad news is Google is acting like Apple.

Unpopular opinion, that game is cellphone quality addicting.
