Re:Rob Pike Goes Nuclear over GenAI on Friday December 26, 2025 @10:07AM (#46392748)
Lots of high paid roles are like that in reality
The game industry inherently unsafe. Studios go in and out of existence constantly.
Re:Reinventing how .NET builds and ships (again) on Wednesday November 26, 2025 @08:39AM (#46057302)
Most .net projects are web API, and backend applications.
Re:Steam Machine on Thursday November 13, 2025 @09:17AM (#45915170)
The problem is that many games and software still only work on windows.
Re:Steam Machine on Thursday November 13, 2025 @04:01AM (#45912531)
You'll find a lot open source leaders, and CEOs of companies like framework are not progressive, they are libertarian. Which people mistake as progressive because it's often very socially liberal.

Trying to pressure them won't do do anything, because goes against libertarian values to force collective values on individuals.

Isn't that literally every distro? They're just curated pre installed packages.
Re:Zoxide: A Better CD Command on Tuesday September 23, 2025 @03:05AM (#45343713)
Zoxide normally aliases to z. Is this not z?
Re:Oxford loses top 3 university ranking for the first time on Sunday September 21, 2025 @12:49PM (#45324418)
When you have well off parents, you can literally be sent to prep schools which drill for these tests.
Re:Dev Culture Is Dying the Curious Developer Is Gone on Friday September 19, 2025 @12:29PM (#45303529)
Because this is what companies want, and they pay us. So that's what we do.
Re:Omarchy on CachyOS on Monday September 15, 2025 @04:26AM (#45247393)
Can't be multiuser
Re:Omarchy Is Out on Tuesday August 26, 2025 @03:44AM (#45023477)
Nix is hard to get into. The lang is weird, and I'm a functional programmer. It's not very well documented. Flakes just don't seem to be documented at all? But are used everywhere?
Re:Omarchy Is Out on Tuesday August 26, 2025 @03:41AM (#45023464)
I like DHH because I like his taste. However there are lots of people like him.

However he seems to have the ability to build movements, and I don't know why.

Re:Mob Programming on Sunday August 24, 2025 @04:14AM (#45002355)
Can be fun sometimes. Especially if you rowdy team and debates start happening.
Re:Leaving Gmail for Mailbox.org on Saturday August 23, 2025 @10:19AM (#44996191)
I've set the bridge as background Daemon so I barely know it's there.
Re:We still build with Ruby in 2025 on Wednesday August 20, 2025 @01:46PM (#44964216)
It was clunky because it actually enforced rules.

The money is in working for a FAANG. So that's what Devs trains for.

There's not much money in working for a small saas unless you're the founder.

Re:Everything I know about good system design on Saturday August 16, 2025 @09:05PM (#44928112)
It's not just FAANG that do these interviews anymore.

Tiny startups do them now as well.

Re:Everything I know about good system design on Saturday August 16, 2025 @10:44AM (#44923902)
These are the places that actually pay well.
Most work doesn't provide that anyway for the majority of people.
People test in production in all the time via Canary releases.
Because rewriting the kernel from scratch would literally cost billions. That's why. Literally criticising them for not achieving an impossible goal.
Rust is important here because it's one of the first(if not the first) to use the rust infrastructure for a GPU.
Re:Anthropic rejects the main developer of the library they use on Wednesday August 06, 2025 @04:22AM (#44809252)
Being able to get hired at a company is often unrelated to being able to generate viable products.

If you want to get hired don't focus on skills to build useful things. Focus on psychology and charisma.

Re:Anthropic rejects the main developer of the library they use on Wednesday August 06, 2025 @04:17AM (#44809218)
Founders of a lot of companies also tend to be dicks. But seems to do alright. Seems to be a double standard there
In the UK they are I think? Well if they want to be BCS accredited.
Ma gains

I have awful hay fever, so take them religiously.

That's because long term goals like that are probabilistic rather than deterministic.

You can follow the steps and still fail.

Where as washing the dishes pretty much has a guaranteed outcome.

You probably don't like taking the risk, or losing your investment of time and effort. So your brain doesn't like it.

Re:If you are useful, it doesn't mean you are valued on Monday June 02, 2025 @10:56AM (#44159472)
I'm pretty sure people living off capital don't have that problem. It just won't be you.
Re:If you are useful, it doesn't mean you are valued on Monday June 02, 2025 @10:55AM (#44159466)
This is explicit strategy companies use. To be expected
