I'd like to say this code is bad, but it's nothing compared with what I put up with on a daily basis.

And with different banks.

Really just a credit card with a different institution is enough to see you through something like this.
Re:Ask HN: Does anyone else have anxiety during standup? on Friday February 03, 2023 @09:45AM (#34641615)
Yeah, we have 30 minute standups, and they often overrun. We don't, on the other hand, have grooming or estimation sessions or retros. The result is that the same issues plague us each sprint, not least badly defined stories ending up in the sprint.
Re:Dublin Whiskey Fire on Friday August 19, 2022 @10:59AM (#32521832)
The pound is still with us, however I agree using the Euro makes more sense.
Indeed, the app, while nicely implemented, contained nothing groundbreaking.
Re:DRY is an over-rated programming principle? on Thursday July 07, 2022 @07:19AM (#32012565)
So your refactor broke the tests, so you assumed the tests must be wrong.
Re:Sex is going out of fashion? on Tuesday June 21, 2022 @12:35PM (#31825923)
Is that the same Homer Simpson who has a highly skilled job in the nuclear industry, earning well above the median.
Re:Laundry symbols make no sense on Tuesday June 21, 2022 @11:36AM (#31825147)
Yes, typically 30, 40, 50, 60 and 90.
If I'm not mistaken, this is not some special power Royal Mail has. In the UK, anyone can launch a prosecution.
Re:Julian Assange can be extradited to the US, court rules on Friday December 10, 2021 @07:16PM (#29517118)
In fairness, the US would be idiotic to renege on their assurances. That essentially would be a valid reason to block any future extraditions.

Saying that, we live in strange times where countries like the UK, which always used to play by the rules, albeit the ones they wrote, now backs out of treaties where the ink is barely dry.

Re:RabbitMQ Streams Overview on Wednesday July 14, 2021 @07:12AM (#27831795)
There is already a mechanism suitable for your Facebook example use-case, namely publishing to an exchange which will send the message to multiple queues.
Re:MasterCard to open up network to cryptocurrencies on Friday February 12, 2021 @09:48AM (#26114162)
Good point, I think they've borrowed the terminology from goldbugs without really understanding it.
Re:Somerset cattle grid mistaken for wall by car sensors on Monday January 11, 2021 @06:54AM (#25727750)
If it is coming out of a blind curve, then the vehicle should not be going very fast anyway.
Re:Oxford University breakthrough on global COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday November 24, 2020 @09:42AM (#25198814)
I appreciate the need for caution, but these people are experts in what they do, any doubts we might have would have already been considered by them.
Re:The Airline Industry's Meltdown on Thursday October 01, 2020 @05:05AM (#24648928)
Not sure why you're getting the downvotes. If I pay for a 25kg bag instead of 20kg, and I don't use the extra, I definitely do not get a refund.
Re:The Airline Industry's Meltdown on Thursday October 01, 2020 @04:49AM (#24648839)
You need to bear in mind that it's common practice for one aircraft to fly several different routes, even in the same day. So it might do a short 2.5 hour flight in the morning, then do a longer 5 hour flight after. Also I'm not sure with lo-cost carriers that the crew will get a chance to disembark. The plane will be turned around as quickly as possible.
Re:Samsung TV owners complain about increasingly obtrusive ads on Tuesday September 29, 2020 @11:43AM (#24629206)
Think of it as unpatched computer on your network, possibly with a built in microphone and camera.
But also perfect is the enemy of good. If wood pellets stop us burning coal in the short term while we transition to a carbon-neutral future, then that's surely a good thing.
Can you explain what you mean by food deficit? What counts as food, does wine for example count? How do you measure food? As in what unit, calories, mass, or pounds sterling?

Does the UK produce enough food to feed herself, but chooses not to in exchange for foreign 'delicacies' from bananas to olives?

I love the way you say it so casually. In the grand scheme of things you are of course right, but I reckon converting a coal plant to gas is a non-trivial undertaking.
I love the metric system and all that, but perhaps 10,000 tonnes might be a better way of expressing the mass of the digger.
Re:Germany bans digital doppelganger passport photos on Thursday June 04, 2020 @12:48PM (#23418916)
In many countries, passport applications are conducted remotely, either by post or online. Passport offices are few and far between, and you would only use them if you needed one the same day, and would pay a large premium do so.
Data protection laws would be meaningless if you made consent a condition of visiting the site.
Re:X Æ A-12: Elon Musk and Grimes confirm baby name on Wednesday May 06, 2020 @09:45AM (#23090844)
Unbelievable, this means that at least two people think this is a good idea.
Re:NHS rejects Apple-Google coronavirus app plan on Monday April 27, 2020 @01:17PM (#22997790)
It's not all about you, it's about trying to stop the spread of the virus to people who might be more vulnerable than you are.
I'd have thought it would be the opposite. People use public transport instead of walking in the cold, people stay inside pubs and bars instead of spreading out outside.
Nuclear is safer than any other power source we have.
Amazon should provide an incentive for reporting this sort of thing.
