Where would you go?

Re:Show HN: Books mentioned on Hacker News in 2025 on Tuesday December 23, 2025 @05:35AM (#46364169)
Yesterday I finished a long listen of the audio book "The Raise and Fall of the Third Reich" by William Shirer (on audible, 60 hours). He frequently quotes "Mein Kampf". I am not sure one can stomach the whole thing but it's interesting to read quotes of it in context.
Re:Amazon Doubles Prime Video Ads to 6 Minutes per Hour on Friday June 13, 2025 @08:47AM (#44268022)
I am paying 19 Euros for Netflix and 85 Euros (give or take for prime). This is getting ridiculous. Some time ago I have read an article on heise.de about privacy picking up again. This is why.
Re:Apple AirPod Pro 2s can now work as hearing aids on Friday September 13, 2024 @07:54AM (#41530337)
I love this. You can say what you want with everyone wearing airpods all the time but I think there is a lot less stigma with wearing them as opposed to hearing aids.

Plus hearing loss is a major risk factor for dementia. So this is big!

Re:Ask HN: Which movies did you watch multiple times? on Sunday August 25, 2024 @03:58AM (#41345386)
The American Alien(s) 1,2 and 3 Limitless The Bourne movies Heat Leon

It's not about the movies themselves but for example with Bourne or the American, it's certain scenes that get me in a mood. A single professional or group doing his / its thing, it's kind of calming.

Feel free to suggest movies in a similar vain.

That's a topic close to my heart as well. I found two books helpful:

- No Self, No Problem (Chris Niebauer) - Solve For Happy (Mow Gawdat)

> Events around a romantic interest recently also made me to rethink on how to effectively control emotions and feelings. The other person can do nothing wrong, but my mind can still feel tormented by their simple actions and events that unfold.

I struggle with this as well and in addition to the two books above I suggest you look into the works of Albert Ellis.

First they want access to the EU citizen's data.

Well, serves me right for clicking on anything with the name vim in it. Now I am making a point of reading the whole article.
> The second part could also be the other way round. If there is easy access to CSAM maybe there will be less abuse. I could see either case be true, or that the availability of such material does not change incidence of abuse st all.

This is actually my opinion but I have no hard data on this. Is it feasible to apply the same logic as with video games where realistic killing is depicted and the argument is that this doesn't make people killers in real life?

I think the argument is that the models are trained on real pics?

The other argument could be that it increases the chances of someone moving on from the consumption state to the abuse state.

Re:Living to 120 is becoming an imaginable prospect on Friday September 29, 2023 @12:51PM (#37706900)
One could argue that if we are smart enough to make this work, we could be smart enough to have the machines take over as well but I am not holding my breath :)
Re:Live near your friends on Wednesday September 27, 2023 @12:01PM (#37676690)
I am in the process of a breakup (scare) right now and realizing how much of my social support system is gone when it's attached to your spouse and obviously loyal. Not totally on topic but I have learned my lesson to actively pursue friendships from now on and cultivate them - and the place where you live obviously affects this in a great way.
Could there be a backdoor on the hardware level?

What are they doing with this kind money? Venture out into other topics like Proton with Protonpass and Protondrive?
Re:Bitwarden: Free, open-source password manager on Monday September 25, 2023 @05:02AM (#37641128)
yes it does, in addition it allows you to access the authenticator key after you save it.
Re:Bitwarden: Free, open-source password manager on Monday September 25, 2023 @04:56AM (#37641079)
I am a happy user and find it very convenient but how safe is it really to have all your jewels centralized in the cloud, including 2FA. It seems such a worthwhile target.

On the other hand keeping everything in sync manually seems a hassle and in the end you just encrypt on your machine and the syncing goes through the cloud anyway, so where's the difference? I'd be happy to hear thoughts on this.

It's a shame that it needs younger doctors for things to change if the science and technology is already there.
Re:Tracking Austrian grocery prices by scraping store sites on Saturday September 16, 2023 @01:10PM (#37536596)
Fellow Austrian here. I have send the link to some journalists and friends. I wonder how to make this actionable both to force politics to act upon this and for the consumer as well.
Re:CEOs are having their worst year in decades on Friday September 15, 2023 @07:36AM (#37521483)
I feel sorry for them. Maybe write up an email about RTO to lighten the mood a little?
Re:“perpetual motion” device is clever [video] on Thursday September 14, 2023 @03:10PM (#37513403)
The video is worth just for his expression at 1:07. Highly recommended. Have no interest in the topic and watched the whole thing!
Do you drink decaf?
Re:Networking for Introverts: A How-To Guide on Monday September 11, 2023 @09:44AM (#37467156)
The Bartleby column is the one thing in the Economist I skip week after week without feeling I miss out on something. I am sure the woman who writes it has a tattoo of a cubicle somewhere and a RTO T-shirt.
Re:The Power of Food for People with Dementia on Saturday September 09, 2023 @12:54PM (#37447427)
For me personally I would like to determine the level of deterioration for lack of a better word where this is done on my behalf. Like an AI monitoring my cognitive levels and pulling the stops at a certain level. I understand how controversial and dystopian this sounds and how many problems this may cause on a society level but it would let me go on a lot longer than if I had to take care of things myself.
Re:The Power of Food for People with Dementia on Saturday September 09, 2023 @12:51PM (#37447404)
I have never had to witness this with someone close to me. Do you think there is a window where you realize what's going on and still are capable of exiting on your own terms?

I remember a case where a famous person in Germany (Gunther Sachs - [0]) ended his own life because he suspected having Alzheimers. It was controversial because he never got an official diagnosis and there was some suspicion he didn't even have it.

Yes that's true and I am sure they will do that. Politicians will of course get encrypted messengers because "national security". But their friends won't, their families won't, their children won't.
Re:“Why isn't chess popular in Japan?” on Friday September 08, 2023 @08:29AM (#37432663)
Very interesting.

> Examples of third places include churches, cafes, clubs, public libraries, gyms, bookstores, stoops and parks. In his book The Great Good Place (1989), Ray Oldenburg argues that third places are important for civil society, democracy, civic engagement, and establishing feelings of a sense of place.

I wonder if there is an online example as well for something like this. I was tempted to say something like forums but I don't think that's the case.

The quote is legit [0] - the rest is speculation on my part but I think it's save to assume that a conservative party taking a u turn on their privacy policy regarding phone surveillance after having been brought down by leaks is not that far fetched.

[0]: https://www.derstandard.at/story/2000132106195/schmid-an-mit...

Fun fact: Austria is probably against it because a guy working for the government had his Apple time capsule confiscated. His WhatsApp messages with politicians were on there and got leaked which resulted in the downfall of the government, multiple resignations and court cases.

Money quote which he wrote to one of his underlings: „You work for the conservative party so you are basically a whore to the rich.“

So some powerful people realized what it means to be on the receiving end of this.

Someone who likes this book might like Box 88 by Charles Cumming as well. I can recommend it.
