Upgrading RAM is still probably cheaper than spending $6000 on a linux box. You're correct that inference will be much faster on the Linux box. But, the mac's unified memory can load larger models. And as OP mentions, it's still hard to beat cloud pricing at home.

Don't forget Jason Kottke's Silkscreen font: https://kottke.org/plus/type/silkscreen/
This is a lovely game. It's simple, and clever, and you have no one to blame but yourself when you lose. Thank you!

I'd love to be able to play by dragging. On mobile it would be really nice if I could draw the shapes with my finger

While ads targeting teenagers are a problem, it’s not the biggest problem with social media.

The issue is that algorithms give users a distorted view of the world that isolates them from alternative viewpoints. Social networks breed all kinds of extremism from political to body image. Not to mention the potential bullying that can occur.

It’s not just dangerous teenagers. It’s dangerous for adults.

The “natural way” would be perfectly fine. But, almost all protein is created on factory farms that are unsustainable. Nothing about the way we consume meat is natural.
I love this idea so much and this male dominant crowd is going to underestimate how much women will be into this. My girlfriend and I have tried to leave a phone call on all night just so that we could wake up together when we are apart. I’m looking forward to trying this app with her.
Re:Ask HN: Why is Bluetooth still so unreliable? on Wednesday January 17, 2024 @10:38AM (#39029181)
That should only happen if those devices are all logged in to the same Apple ID. Do you all have separate Apple accounts?
Re:Planlike.pro – New Estimating Tool on Tuesday February 21, 2023 @08:51AM (#34881106)
Exactly. I came to the comments to figure out what this is. I was intrigued, though.
Yes. I completely turned around my life at 42. By being in touch with my true self, I’ve become more happy and successful than I’ve been in my life. Everything is so much better now.
Re:Ask HN: How do you deal with getting old and feeling lost? on Sunday February 06, 2022 @09:48AM (#30232955)
This is a total long shot, but what you’re describing sounds like gender dyphoria.

I’m not saying you have it. But, you should be on the lookout for fundamental ways that you’re not being true to yourself. You may be living your life to meet the expectations of others instead of optimizing for your own happiness.

Re:Vibration API on Saturday December 18, 2021 @11:36AM (#29605838)
I’m not surprised that this isn’t supported in mobile Safari.
Re:New York Senate passes Right to Repair bill on Friday June 11, 2021 @12:05PM (#27475084)
So, what is actually included? Isn’t everything electronic now?
Re:LG is getting out of the mobile phone business on Monday April 05, 2021 @12:06AM (#26695243)
A lot of those design decisions can be explained by Apple’s push towards smaller, more waterproof and more durable devices. Like you mention, these choices do make Apple money. But, they also lead to a superior product.
Re:Apple’s Anti-Tracking Plans for iPhone on Tuesday December 15, 2020 @08:27AM (#25430071)
One important implication of not using full encryption is that it protects users from themselves. If a user forgets their password, Apple can still unlock their data. From a security perspective, this obviously isn't ideal. But, from the perspective of the average user who has lost all of their data, this is great.

A crucial feature of new things is that they are often better. Not all new things beat incumbents. Only the good ones win.
Re:WebGL Fluid Simulation on Sunday July 26, 2020 @10:16AM (#23957172)
I tried the app. Why isn’t the animation quality as nice as the web version?
Re:The TikTok War on Tuesday July 14, 2020 @11:42AM (#23833251)
How is the product not commercialized? Tik Tok has ads and influencers.
I'm not a RegEx expert, but I've googled them enough to have the basics. This is exactly what I needed to improve my skills.
Re:How I made a 3D game in 2 KB of JavaScript on Monday March 09, 2020 @11:27AM (#22526144)
FYI, there is no jump button. Also, those are rocks, not ramps. Jumping is not a gameplay mechanic in this game.
Re:Bug-a-Salt (2013) on Wednesday March 04, 2020 @10:47AM (#22484711)
Unlike a vast majority of other animals, studies seem to indicate that insects are not capable of feeling pain and suffering. Killing insects is effectively just killing robots.
Re:Second Sock Syndrome on Monday February 24, 2020 @02:26PM (#22407461)
While this is definitely a problem developers face, many of the solutions in this article only apply to socks. HN, do you have any tips for completing personal projects when they stop being fun?

There's so much content there. But, this explanation of particles is pretty great:

Also, it should be noted that foreign governments are actively trying to polarize us.

Thank you, Amelia. This is beautiful and so well done. I especially like the in-line quizzes.
Have they updated that page? Backups are the very first thing on the list.
Re:Notarizing Your Mac Software for macOS Catalina on Monday October 07, 2019 @09:00AM (#21180220)
Actually, Apple doesn't charge anything for a developer account to notarize Mac software.
Re:Apple approves previously rejected HKMap.live app on Friday October 04, 2019 @09:08PM (#21163183)
Unless your mom seriously understands the security implications of sideloading, she should probably just stick with the App Store.
Re:Can Uber ever make money? on Friday April 26, 2019 @02:23PM (#19760437)
The drivers may not make enough money:

https://www.ridester.com/how-much-do-uber-drivers-make/#2

As a general rule, drivers should devote 20% of their earnings to insurance, maintenance, gas, and repairs. When this is accounted for, the average Uber driver earnings are barely above the poverty line.

Re:Can Uber ever make money? on Friday April 26, 2019 @02:02PM (#19760230)
Keep in mind that this may not change when driverless cars become widely available. Maintaining a fleet thousands of driverless cars may prove to be more expensive than crowdsourcing a vehicle fleet.
