Re:For all that's holy, can you just leverage the Web, please? on Wednesday September 03, 2025 @12:05PM (#45117357)
Author chose a brand based on loyalty instead of doing research. Leverage the web indeed - Google Search would have quickly revealed Electrolux is mediocre.

Plus, the manufacturer can't run a simple website to look up serial numbers, so author prefers their AI-based solution? And then builds one himself? This post reads like satire.

I've never used Perl and I am not confused. It's just an eyeroll-inducing referential joke, and ironically a perfect example of OP's point. See also: $BIGCORP, Day_Job, etc

They could have just said "the most important language [...] is spoken language".

Re:What's Happening to Reading? on Wednesday July 16, 2025 @02:53PM (#44585631)
Not everyone "misses" the point. People can take what they want and choose to discard the rest. Consider, for example, watching beach volleyball not for the thrill of the sport but to ogle the players. That they're also engaged in serious competition is not lost on anyone - the audience just doesn't care.

Some authoritarians also like vigilante violence and find it in The Punisher. Some racists also like futuristic fiction and find it in Star Trek. The rest of the work don't fly over their heads - it is willfully ignored because it doesn't match their worldview.

Many people are perfectly capable of getting e.g. the moods, visuals, themes, ideas conveyed by poetry, and it simply doesn't match their taste. That doesn't make them morons, and to imply otherwise is snobbery.

> Karoline Leavitt: “This alleged assessment is flat-out wrong and was classified as ‘top secret’ but was still leaked to CNN by an anonymous, low-level loser in the intelligence community. The leaking of this alleged assessment is a clear attempt to demean President Trump, and discredit the brave fighter pilots who conducted a perfectly executed mission to obliterate Iran’s nuclear program. Everyone knows what happens when you drop fourteen 30,000 pound bombs perfectly on their targets: total obliteration.”

All the juicy intel is right here in this press statement. The bombs struck bullseye and killed satire dead.

How can burning 150 kg of mass create 750 kg of mass?

If piano lessons is what trained you not to abandon a crying baby, I'm not sure to say.
Not very upbeat actually. The episode drops several reminders that the simulated people can't die, by accident or choice. After they tire of life, they are trapped in an eternity of boredom and madness.
Re:Images reveal exocomets around 74 nearby stars on Saturday February 01, 2025 @12:47PM (#42900303)
You fundamentally misunderstand the concepts. The other poster is correct. Given two orbits, it takes just as much energy to get "up" as it does to get "down".
Any additional capability will be quickly filled with bloat, especially in the video game industry, where optimization is for post-release.

Expect a lot of creatively bankrupt tech demos with eye-watering hardware requirements.

Satisfying the desire for retribution has to be one of the system's goals, otherwise people would take matters into their own hands. However, you are correct that it shouldn't be the main goal, or even a major one.
Re:Django and Postgres for the Busy Rails Developer on Wednesday December 11, 2024 @02:05PM (#42391482)
Ruby, and Rails in particular, has a lackluster dev experience with any editor that isn't RubyMine. That's been a huge obstacle for me personally.
Re:How should we treat beings that might be sentient? on Sunday December 01, 2024 @10:09PM (#42292728)
The extent to which an individual or group has "rights" is defined by its ability to remove value. This can come in the form of physical violence, economic boycott, legal attacks, social ostracism, etc.

Women, minorities, the poor, children, etc have fewer "rights" on average, sometimes explicitly so in some cultures. This is not because of the value they add, which is enormous, but because of the value they can choose to withhold, which is comparatively limited.

Not sure what kind of maniac would "consume" porn openly at school. In contrast, I doubt most kids will have any such misgivings about social media, especially if not enforced.

> It's hard to understand why people care so much about someone's personal political opinions.

People care because he has power and money, which he uses to shape the world in alignment with those political opinions.

The same is true of anyone else with power - Xi, Putin, Gates, Thiel, Zuck, and the countless others with influence over business and government. A lot of money is spent to analyze and alter their political opinions.

What's hard for me to understand is why this isn't plainly obvious to you.

Re:Thoughts on the New iOS Control Centre on Friday September 20, 2024 @01:32AM (#41599064)
I wish more people had the ability to daily-drive an iOS device and an Android, to more clearly see the positives and negatives of both.

Having long ago switched to iOS as my primary, I am continually infuriated by some of the awful UX decisions made on that platform - the control center, yes, but also the app library drawer, the settings screen, the clock app, the list goes on. I could write a rant like OP for each one.

Android has its own ways of driving me insane, but it's clear that Apple's UX has been slipping for a long time.

Like your son, I was once a teen in a CS program. I was "good at computers" and my parents expected me to go, but I had no direction, no interest in the courses, and no hobbies outside of video game modding, which I pursued relentlessly to the exclusion of everything else.

I was also lonely, anxious, and depressed, and lacking the maturity to express it. In any case, no-one asked.

Pretty soon my grades were tanking, and my parents and I were having awful screaming matches. I hated class, life, and my parents, who could only offer housing, funding, and angry punishment.

Eventually there was no way to continue. I dropped out and got a minimum wage job. It took years to find my own way back to computers. I found therapy too, which helped, but my relationship with my parents never fully recovered.

Looking back, I needed an adult who could ask good questions, listen with empathy (not judgement), and provide thoughtful guidance. My parents were not capable of this, in part because of their own upbringing.

I hope you find these skills inside yourself. Here are some example questions to consider asking your child:

- Tell me about this game. What do you like about it?

- Are you friends with the people in the game? How close are you with your IRL friends?

- Are you interested in a relationship with anyone?

- How do you see yourself making money one day? Are there any cool toys you want to buy for yourself?

- etc.

And here are a couple of books to consider reading:

- "How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk" - almost everything here applies to adults too.

- "Conversationally Speaking" - a general guide on asking good questions with meaningful answers. Some of the examples are awkward but you will get the idea.

Good luck.

Do this if you hate your child and just want them gone, but keep in mind it's a great way to permanently destroy your relationship.
Re:"Jeff Bezos and Amazon tried to imprison my husband" on Saturday August 10, 2024 @03:53PM (#41211781)
Thank you for providing this context. It sounds like everyone involved - Amazon, the DOJ, the supposed victim - all have deep pockets and are deeply unethical.

It turns the original sob story into a different kind of rage bait.

> All of this tells us why Mexico is weaker than the US.

> But not why it’s poorer.

The article's closing statement, just before the paywall.

Your point doesn't quite follow from the example. If the dev is interested in sports unrelated to baseball (tennis, soccer, etc) they'd need the scoring explained regardless.

Mobile Safari on iOS 17.5.1 - I noticed it happens when zooming in and out (to better see the graphs). Good luck, I hope you are able to find a solution.

Re:The Tragic Downfall of the Internet's Art Gallery on Thursday May 16, 2024 @09:29PM (#40385405)
I'm pretty sure DeviantArt stopped being about actual "art" long before AI. Years ago I deleted my account because I didn't want to see my posts next to furry scribbles, softcore porn, and other low-skill fetish adjacent crap.

Professional digital artists post at Artstation now from what I can tell.

I've seen it bright green with the naked eye. It definitely happens. That article is inaccurate.
Getting stuck is part of the game. It could take several sessions or it could take several years. It's what makes a climb truly hard, a "project".

It's an essential part of the sport - the satisfaction of using one's own body and mind to overcome the seemingly impossible.

If you never get stuck, how could you possibly experience it?
