Re:Some Thing is Happening A note from the AI companies on Sunday November 01, 2026 @05:14PM (#50330488)
Right. And when we talk "to" the LLM we address it as "you" or give it commands as if there is someone there to respond.

Maybe we need a new pronoun for it. 2nd person inanimate. YOU -> YAI?

This week I was experimenting with leaving out "you" pronouns by changing everything to passive/subjunctive and leaving out the subject.

E.g. when referring to something the AI has written or done: The code that was written... Instead of: The code you wrote.

For something I want it to do: May the code be modified to include the following constraints... Instead of: Modify the code to include the following constraints

I don't know if that's really helpful but it's good to be cognizant I'm not really talking to anyone.

There's the delta corridors proposal in California that includes tidal gates:

https://deltacorridors.com/channel-flows/

It's ICE. So not your fellow citizens. Mostly.

But I agree we shouldn't be using robot dogs for this. They should be reserved for tracking down and destroying banned books.

Good point. Like how January 6th was basically orchestrated by the FBI and other government actors.

"Space Mormons" So, regular, "orthodox" Mormons?
Re:I Became a Citizen of Japan on Sunday October 18, 2026 @04:30PM (#50145192)
Isn't it kind of the intersectionality of the right of self determination and the right to freely associate or the right to not freely associate?

Re:Were Software Engineers blue-collar workers all along? on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @04:00PM (#50077785)
That sounds murderous.

They should both go home to their wives who surely have their cookies ready along with a pair of slippers and a backrub.

Now that women are back out of the workforce, there's enough money for the blue collar worker and the immigrant. I hear the 2050s are gonna be a 1950s paradise but with better technology. Here's hoping.

Re:We are going to kill "unalive" on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @03:40PM (#49983033)
This social media censorship is literally Orwellian. In 1984 the Party had gotten rid of negative adjectives like "bad" and all you could say to express that concept was "ungood". Here we have "kill" being replaced by "unalive".

Far worse and more consequential was the government-urged censorship on any open discussion of COVID, vaccines, origins, etc. during and after the pandemic.

Re:When did Google get so f-ing weird? on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @06:13PM (#49915167)
Also weird that it's basically pushing the person to end their putative relationship just based on that very small search with zero context.

How many people will be hurt because of idiotic AI responses like this?

Just like AI shouldn't counsel someone to end their own life, it also shouldn't counsel people to end their relationships, their careers, and so on.

Re:Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse on Friday September 18, 2026 @04:49PM (#49760093)
Speaking of China, people say we can't stop developing AI even if it will kill us because China won't stop and we have to keep up with them or maintain superiority.

China probably looks at these people as a good reason why they have to keep going no matter what.

You could say the same about America's far-left.
Re:1Password Supports the Ethnic Cleansing of Europe on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @12:35AM (#49531758)
Is it ethnic cleansing when Zimbabwe or South Africa essentially kick out white farmers? And if so, why the histrionics when they were welcomed as refugees in the United States?
Re:Amazon Is Requiring Passkeys on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @12:32AM (#49531740)
I don't think you have to. Those passkey managers just sync across devices for you as a convenience.
Re:We never use AI. For anything on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @11:14PM (#49443805)
Sort of like how you can be a vegan without verifying that no animal ever died and decomposed and got uptaken by the root system of whatever plant you end up eating.
How about that mayor of Seattle? Although she's doing a pretty bad job.
Wake me up when there's a similarly outraged article by a woman about the much earlier trend of a woman secretly recording men in the gym who notice her attractiveness, and are then publicly shamed and mocked for noticing by uploading the video. Where's the accountability for that? Both groups should stop, but I'd also like to see some equality of coverage and outrage.

Scientific Evidence Supports Customary and Backup (Conditional) Spanking by Parents: Update of Larzelere and Baumrind (2010) and Fuller (2009) Robert E Larzelere, Jason Fuller

2019, Session at the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts

Abstract This outline provides pincite references for research supporting appropriate disciplinary spanking, in contrast to the predominantly correlational evidence used to oppose all spanking by the APA and AAP. Two major publications in the past year showed that (1) the correlational evidence against customary spanking becomes trivial after adjusting for pre-existing child differences. Moreover, that trivial evidence can be either harmful or beneficial on average, depending upon the statistical method used to adjust for pre-existing differences. (2) The second recent publication shows that the evidence against customary spanking is identical to the apparent effects of most corrective actions when analyzed in the same way (e.g., longitudinal analyses controlling statistically for initial differences in the outcome). This is true whether the corrective actions are by parents (e.g., other disciplinary responses) or professionals (treatments for depression in women). The outline summarizes other meta-analyses ignored in scientific summaries used to oppose all spanking and evidence that back-up spanking and phased-out spanking result in better outcomes compared to never-spanked children.

Re:Why tech bosses keep sharing their manifestos about AI on Saturday August 15, 2026 @11:18PM (#49316591)
I think in certain circumstances they are more than pets. Symbiotic pack animals. They guard, help hunt, pull a sled over the ice, and help fight. Some other animals may meet similar qualifications, like a horse. They can also communicate, just not extensively or symbolically.

Re:Bible as RAG Database on Friday June 26, 2026 @02:37AM (#48683111)
Sure, but that is literally the opposite of the Christian teaching. The previous chapter, 1 Corinthians 6, reads: "You are not your own. You were bought at a price. Glorify God with your body."

Elsewhere it is written: "Present yourselves as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable until God, which is your reasonable act of worship."

These are voluntary acts of obedience in the same way that Jesus, though being in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but humbled himself, taking on the form of a servant, and being obedient even to death on a cross. (Philippians 2).

To be a Christian is to take up your cross and follow Christ. Consenting to a lack of consent in how your body is treated hence forward. A martyr's painful death. Or the embrace of your spouse.

Let me try! Is it any less Africa if there are no more black people? Is it any less Israel if there are no more Jewish people? Wow. So many options open up when you think about it like that.
Yet it's perfectly fine to destroy historic statues...

Re:LLMs Are Closer to Religion Than They Appear on Monday June 01, 2026 @04:12PM (#48361984)
Secular humanism has been accepted as a religion for First amendment purposes.

Non theistic Buddhism is still considered a religion.

Worldview might be a better term for us to use in understanding people's first amendment rights. And also the idea that there is no neutral worldview. E.g. "secularism" is directly hostile to many religious viewpoints, and to the degree that its proponents use it to oppose religion, secularism becomes a religion/worldview/belief system.

Unless you're living in the Flintstones, people are not the horses. Engines are the horses.

Carriages had drivers and passengers. Those human functions are still present in cars.

Yabba dabba doo!

Germany shut down all their nuclear power plants. The Amish don't use tractors or whatever. I guess we could have AI free countries. The last bastions of true humanity or something.
Re:Shunning AI is the human choice on Friday May 22, 2026 @05:09PM (#48241715)
The old gods lost their power because they had been conquered by the Spirit of Christ.

It's a danger to beware of, that people might start to listen to LLMs like they have the gospel truth on morality and spiritual matters. But they're just an image of a man given breath and speech, without true wisdom. Man took sand and copper and formed the simulation of a mind. If we then bow down to it and obey it, we're fools.

The elected office of sheriff, being a law enforcement office, can push back at the county level to overreaching state government, in a similar way to how state government through states' rights can push back against an encroaching federal government. It's a power of government that is closer to the people and more accountable to them, theoretically. Not to say it can't be abused but it can also serve a valuable role in checks and balances. Look up the principle of the Lesser Magistrate.
