News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

The European Network for Payments (ENP) was announced last month as a challenger to the Visa/Mastercard duopoly. Time will tell, I guess...
Did you read the comment I was replying to? The commenter claimed Huawei had the lead in design. I begged to differ. I'd accept the design of the 90 Pro Max on a $300 phone, but a $2,000 phone? lol
lmao weak troll attempt. From the rear, the Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max looks like a a lock on a hotel room door. Google it and see what I mean
No, Linux phones won't become a viable alternative to Android or iOS phones.

The average phone user couldn't give a damn about the underlying OS - they buy on price and features - not the "hackability", or whatever drives the good readers of Hacker news to buy phones.

Re:Ask HN: How's the situation with treating ADHD in UK on Wednesday April 13, 2022 @12:16PM (#31016502)
I assume you're looking for a diagnosis as an adult?

A diagnosis from a private clinic is approx. £400 (that's what I paid anyway).

You fill out a screening test in advance of a meeting with a psychiatrist.

If the psychiatrist diagnoses you with ADHD, they can initiate medication (as long as you're suitable) and once they've arrived at the correct dose for you, they will usually hand the prescribing over to your GP.

Hope this helps...

Absolute nonsense.

Your "advice" is idiotic and dangerous.

Re:Why did we wait so long for the bicycle? on Tuesday July 16, 2019 @04:44AM (#20448464)
"Bicycles can be ridden on dirt roads or sidewalks (although the latter led to run-ins with pedestrians and made bicycles unpopular among the public at first)."

Little has changed.

An accusation of "whataboutism" is an easy put-down if somebody disagrees with your comment, but doesn't have any counter-argument...

Pretty low-effort stuff, tbh. It's up there with "fake news!" as a credible rebuttal.

Whataboutism? Why is that?

It's pretty hypocritical to propose mandating electric cars for a cleaner environment while power companies are still burning coal and peat.

I wonder how many electric car owners give any thought to the source of their electricity?

Bogs can play a major role in capturing and storing carbon. I think it's safe to say that they play an important role in the ecosystem no matter which side of the planet they're on, and should remain unmolested.
The first thing which needs to change:

"Coal and peat continue to be used for power generation. In 2017 coal and peat accounted for 49% of carbon emissions from electricity generation, despite only accounting for 19% of electricity generated. The result of this is that the carbon intensity of the Irish electricity was the fourth highest in the EU in 2016, despite all our progress on using renewable energy."

A 128Gb M.2 SSD is maybe £30?
Sorry, I didn't have time to type a lengthy explanation earlier but basically what chadash wrote.

I haven't looked into OEM pricing myself lately, but as an example:

Dell Inspiron 17 3000 1Tb w/Ubuntu: £419+tax Dell Inspiron 17 3000 1Tb+128SSD w/Windows 10 Pro: £619+tax

The reason for this was explained in the companion podcast.

Buying a ThinkPad with an Ubuntu preload will probably save you 100 bucks (or whatever a Windows license costs these days)?

That's how it works with Dell anyway.

“Dick, this guy must be either very smart or very lucky. He constantly claims he knew less about what was going on than anyone else in the field, but he still made the crucial discovery.”

Rosalind Franklin would probably disagree.

Nope, don't do it without reading your contract.

Your company may own any intellectual property you create on company time, whether it's done on a company laptop or not...other companies claim ownership of anything created while you're employed by the company.

TL:DR Release your code under a pseudonym, and don't use your company laptop.
