Re:WTF Ubuntu? on Monday November 02, 2026 @04:54PM (#50344389)
I recently installed NixOS on my thinkpad z16. I set up a sandboxed pi agent to help me configure it and I think it works great. (I also read enough documentation to understand the nix language).

I hade some issues with the trackpad (worse issues that it not being an apple trackpad ie). I told the agent about the problem. It inspected the config, wrote some scripts for me to run outside the sandbox that listened to the trackpad while I used in as per some instructions, and then proceeded to add a few configuration lines that solved to problem. I was pretty impressed (though I think there were maybe 3 back-and-forths with scripts to run, tbh).

Re:Show HN: Proton Drive for Linux on Saturday October 10, 2026 @08:11AM (#50032132)
I think they are spreading themselves a bit too thin by trying to have an answer to every Google feature. I would have stayed if the core stuff worked. Would have been a lot better if they made some privacy focused API other apps could hook into and other providers could copy, and then we could create an ecosystem that replaces Google.
Re:Show HN: Proton Drive for Linux on Saturday October 10, 2026 @04:03AM (#50030756)
Not sure, but that would explain how Google photos are always in sync and proton drive is always backing up my photos with 50-70 items to go (with no way to see which pictures/videos are backed up). Often their VPN will prevent even their own sevices from working and I have to reconnect manually to make it work. Never had these issues with mullvad.

I'm generally not very happy with proton's services or apps. When this year of my payment is over I'll be switching away.

Re:Toyota is finally taking its best-seller electric on Thursday September 24, 2026 @06:10PM (#49837406)
From what I've read, EVs mostly break with the engine, and recover quite some of the energy that way. To the point that I've read warnings about the breaks rusting here in south Sweden, and that you need to do some aggressive breaking now and then to clean them out.
Surely it isn't impossible to devise one-way data flows that provably work for remote sensing? And yeah then you have to send somebody to fix stuff if something is off..

Like something that would work but not not scale would be one computer writing data to an updating qr code and another reading it. Surely something like that can be made (and probably already exists?) on the cable level?

Re:Ask HN: Is it impossible to disable Siri on macOS 27? on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @10:26AM (#49801855)
:) I'm not trying omarchy. I'll probably go with Fedora or NixOS.
Re:Ask HN: Is it impossible to disable Siri on macOS 27? on Monday September 21, 2026 @01:09PM (#49790126)
I jumped to mac with Tiger when they started using x86. Around 2006 I believe. It was always to become more comfortable with POSIX, but I liked it and have stayed. My current laptop is a 2019 MBP and as they are now phasing out Intel support I'm now buying a thinkpad and finally moving on to Linux. Macos has just become too annoying, and macs too expensive.

That's what sidestepping means, no?

That the answer doesn't matter, and capabilities and behaviour are there either way.

Re:Portal by Spotify cut my Claude Code token usage by 90% on Saturday September 05, 2026 @06:33PM (#49581365)
That specific thing hasn't been latency free for me for years.

Though I agree it should be.

I've played this game before and it's been called queens, not kings. But this is a fairly nice implementation.

You're mixing up Go and Othello :)
Re:Portal by Spotify cut my Claude Code token usage by 90% on Saturday September 05, 2026 @02:03PM (#49579056)
Try it on a flaky connection. Every menu (maybe any action of any kind?) makes a roundtrip to the server before displaying, with a very slow timeout. It's crazy how bad it is.
I have a software degree and some work experience but have been doing other things for a decade or so. I'm curious to try out some "vibe engineering" but it seems a bit daunting to get started, there are so many new tools available on top of the AI itself. Are there good resources for somebody like me to get started, that'll guide me though how to think about prompting, and using CI and how go have the agent successfully write specs and tests and what-not. I don't mind paying some for a good course, but I find it hard to figure out which one would be worthwhile, or whether there are some youtubers that would be better to follow.

Any tips?

Demo does not work in Fx on android
I've used both, and for me mullvad has worked a lot better. They seem more focused on VPN as core to what they do and don't leak data when reconnecting to a different server, and with proton I often experience that my connection stops working if my laptop gas been closed for some time, and the only way to make it work again is to reconnect to a new server. And then it leaks connections for a few seconds.

My gf experiences some thing like this sometimes. Seems to correlate without exercise or excitement or eating histamine rich food. She takes pentatop to regulate it with some success. I'm also interested to head about your experience.
Re:The desperation of NYTimes on Thursday June 04, 2026 @02:29PM (#48402699)
I've been close to subscribing to The Economist a couple of times, but when I do a web search I find a lot of people complaining about their similar practice of making it difficult to unsubscribe, so I've refrained.

I guess there are more people who give up on unsubscribing than who refrain from subscribing?

Re:Mythos Finds a Curl Vulnerability on Monday May 11, 2026 @04:33AM (#48092488)
Voice input works really well for people speaking English with a Swedish accent. I think the accent of most educated Swedes is mostly a case of prosody. For sure there are some sounds we say slightly differently than native English speakers. We often have some trouble with /s/ and /z/, but I don't know, "war and peace", I think that's easily understood.

Source: voice typing this with Swedish vocal chords, and only had to correct "different lives" to "differently", and add /[^\w\s]/.

Re:Biscuit on Tuesday May 05, 2026 @06:25AM (#48020499)
Cool. Though one of the reasons for me to have a device like that is that it doesn't have distractions like games and messages.

But for those that want that, I guess this is a cheap version?

How does 91 x >1e9 become 600e9? Is it like a bundle discount?

"It hosts 91 other AI “unicorns”, private companies worth more than $1bn, collectively valued at a further $600bn."

It's called Freja. It's also possible to get a special hardware device to do the bankID dance, which is great to have if your phone breaks, as having that device will make it possible to provision a new bankID without visiting a bank office.
What do you mean here? Isn't bankID limited to only one device?
Re:Google to Provide Pentagon with AI Agents on Sunday March 15, 2026 @04:48AM (#47385482)
Just because there one or maybe several bad/worse countries in the world, that doesn't mean anything goes ethically. That's a dangerous line of reasoning.
Re:Google to Provide Pentagon with AI Agents on Wednesday March 11, 2026 @08:23AM (#47334664)
Surely that depends heavily on the country.
Play in background, including with screen off, and ability to download videos to watch on a plane.
Re:Communities Are Not Fungible on Wednesday February 11, 2026 @05:21PM (#46982048)
Having global identities that move with you between networks doesn't mean that your identities need to be singular nor openly tied to your government identity.

and a similar one for $$.
Re:Round the tree, yes, but not round the squirrel on Friday January 02, 2026 @04:00AM (#46462863)
I take it that the squirrel didn't circle the man? Two squirrels running around the same tree, are they circling each other? Or is it that when two bodies are orbiting the same center, then the body with the larger orbit is circling the one with the smaller? What is the definition of "circling"?
