It's pretty common in my circles to call it X now. Things change, most people adapt.
I'm curious why they can't pick up and drop off at exact locations, as long as the location is in their operating boundaries.

I'm not sure even Los Angeles keeps them up 24/7. Most cities either schedule them for evenings or do as-needed.
Re:The man who bought Pine Bluff, Arkansas (2022) on Saturday March 23, 2024 @09:47PM (#39804462)
There's a lot of small towns where buying Main Street wouldn't be an outrageous cost. It's got some appeal. Go in and make it work again.

But when you get down to the "How?" it quickly becomes apparent that the inertia is strong and the odds of success are extremely low.

Still, it's a fun daydream.

You'd think some politicians would jump on this obvious opportunity as well.
Ballpark, how much would you estimate it to cost?
Re:Why Is Panera Exempted from California's New Minimum Wage Law? on Wednesday February 28, 2024 @04:09PM (#39543456)
The law specifies that you had be operating a bakery that sells bread on the premises as of Sept 15, 2023 in order to qualify for the exemption.
I did the same. I know it won't matter to them, but I feel better not paying for a product they're actively and intentionally making worse.

It does also mean I'll be doing much less frequent business with their store.

Asking because I have no idea - What companies were the big wins from Sam's YC time?
Larry Summers is in place to effectively give the govt seal of approval on the new board, for better and worse.

What specifically did they want to do?
It seems related to the car not being aware there was an injured person under it.

It's not hard to imagine that it's simply unequipped to know something like that, and it does seem fair to require that it become so equipped.

Huge supporter of autonomous cars, still feel like this is completely reasonable to require a solution for.

Re:Return to Office Is Bullshit and Everyone Knows It on Monday October 02, 2023 @12:14PM (#37740160)
2011 here. Fully remote teams for more of that.

It does take time and active effort to become fully productive in a remote environment. It's not something you're just born knowing how to do, it's a set of skills just like working in an office is a set of skills. You have to learn them.

Re:DALL-E 3 is now publicly available inside Bing on Sunday October 01, 2023 @10:37AM (#37726329)
I have no idea if it's making them money, but a year ago I never heard anyone say the name "Bing" and now I'm hearing it several times a day.
Re:Amazon Prime Video content to start including ads next year on Friday September 22, 2023 @01:33PM (#37614982)
I doubt most will. I will, but I don't buy that much from them anyway.
>t. Do you really think if people were as/more productive at home that companies would throw that increase in productivity away?

Yes, I do.

Also, I don't think the vast majority of office-based companies have any idea what their actual productivity levels are.

The always entertaining saveitforparts Youtuber tried to make a "very small array" from a bunch of used satellite mini-dishes. He ran into all sorts of fun issues with his ad hoc construction.

I admire the guy for having as much fun with his failures as his successes.

Re:Flexport is rescinding a bunch of signed offer letters on Friday September 08, 2023 @09:10PM (#37441208)
I've never gone back to an old company.

But I have worked for a previous manager again. He left the original company too, but set up contracting as an outside consultant to the software we built. He'd hire me to do some of the work as needed. Great gig for him, not bad for me.

That's not that rare of a setup if you're working on large B2B software packages.

Re:Ask HN: Any interesting books you have read lately? on Thursday August 17, 2023 @02:30AM (#37157969)
The DiCaprio movie is Killers Of The Flower Moon. It does center around Native Americans, but in the 1920s in Oklahoma.

I'm impressed the replies to this manage to turn your celebration of several positive possible developments into a doomsday discussion.

I just set the device name in my phone as "cyberdeck" and called it a day.
Re:Epilogue of my time working at Twitter on Thursday July 27, 2023 @03:14PM (#36898687)
I have never been more burned out and depressed than when I was in a low performance culture.

Completely wore me out.

Re:Breaking Superconductor News on Wednesday July 26, 2023 @04:33PM (#36884556)
This site will no doubt have the reports in either direction on the front page.
If this is true (huge gigantic "if"), then all information on this topic should be immediately declassified. It is unacceptable to keep the biggest discovery in the history of the human race from the public. There is no justification for it.
Re:What We Know About LLMs (A Primer) on Tuesday July 25, 2023 @10:25AM (#36862707)
You asked for examples of impactful uses, you have been provided with some.

Arguing with people who provided what you asked for is a common but unproductive habit.

Are most AI papers even published beyond arxiv anyway?

How much wealth was he gifted with? Order of magnitude would be a sufficient response.

Re:Don’t Make Fun of Renowned Dan Brown (2013) on Friday July 21, 2023 @05:07PM (#36819773)
I watched his course on Masterclass and found it helpful in learning to write his type of book. I was impressed that he is very conscious of what he does, how he does it, and he's quite good at explaining it to others.
Re:Leaving the Web3 cult on Thursday July 20, 2023 @01:36PM (#36803899)
A friend with an existing successful "lifestyle" web business asked me for advice on potential web3 avenues for his company. We talked about it, mostly focused on the aspects you mention here. For us, that's what web3 meant, that and effectively letting the users be in control of as much as possible, enabled by blockchain tech.

We had a number of discussions about it, and found a potential route forward, but it was a very different business model from how he is making money now. In the end, he decided he didn't want to risk the money he's making now for a more uncertain path.

It was an extremely useful exercise, though, and a good way to understand what's out there and how it can be used. I think the version of web3 you mention is possible, but it's so different from how businesses operate now that it will take a very successful high profile company built from the ground up around web3 for the ideas to go anywhere. The risk just feels too high for existing companies, and even most new startups. You're turning over a lot of control and trying to succeed anyway.
