In venezuela there are more lawyers than taxi drivers so they end up driving cabs for living.
If you take a branch from a tree to kill a deer, can I do the same without asking for permission?

We wouldn't be here today if we couldn't.

Re:Perl 6 Released on Saturday December 26, 2015 @08:34PM (#10796039)
I like what I see. Now make it available at Godaddy, Namecheap and all hosting providers for it to dethrone PHP as the king of the web.
Re:Kaleidoscope: Implementing a Language with LLVM on Friday December 25, 2015 @06:17PM (#10792676)
I haven't read the tut yet but… could I write a language like python with that tutorial? If not, what would it be the best tutorial for indented syntax like python?
I'd like to have that thing on the roof of my house hooked to a powerwall, is that even possible?
Re:Poor man's VPN via ssh socks proxy on Sunday December 13, 2015 @02:52PM (#10727638)
Excuse my total ignorance but I don't live in the command line, so what is this sorcery you speak of useful for us mere mortals?

I really want to learn not to feel left behind.

Re:Screenshots from developers: 2002 vs. 2015 on Saturday December 12, 2015 @09:27AM (#10722839)
I believe my only change has been from Notepad2 to Sublime and from Firefox to Safari.
Re:Swift open source – let the revolution begin on Friday December 11, 2015 @08:26AM (#10716910)
Well yes, I live in Venezuela.

Thank socialism for that.

Re:Swift open source – let the revolution begin on Wednesday December 09, 2015 @10:55PM (#10708773)
I wish I could use the Swift compiler from the command line instead of having to download a 10GB XCode monster over my shitty 14kb modem that will take a couple of years.

Is there a swifter option?

Re:Have Static Languages Won? on Thursday November 26, 2015 @10:20AM (#10633279)
> Java is the only STL that made the cut.

Because of Android.

Re:Have Static Languages Won? on Thursday November 26, 2015 @10:15AM (#10633247)
In academia and corporate? Sure.

In real world? Php, Python, Ruby and Javascript still reign supreme.

Mobile is another story since main platforms are controlled by corporations, but if it were for the hobbyists neither java nor swift would have had a chance.

Re:The Hourglass: An underrated invention (2013) on Tuesday November 10, 2015 @03:00PM (#10542022)
Put some water instead of sand, a small turbine in the neck, and you may have an interesting power generator. Perhaps a portable light bulb?
Re:Why nuclear energy is our best option at the moment on Tuesday November 03, 2015 @07:36PM (#10503794)
Or just install solar roofs with power walls in every single american home for 1 trillion dollars and be done with it. No need to occupy extra land or run expensive machinery and power lines all over the country.

Distributed energy is the future.

Re:80x40 on Monday November 02, 2015 @08:02AM (#10491574)
Interesting. Put it sideways, allow to save many frames and then play ASCII movies. That may start a new fad. The internet is all about fads.
Re:Convoy presents itself as “Uber for trucking” on Wednesday October 28, 2015 @03:20PM (#10466641)
Never underestimate the power of the long tail.
Re:The End of Software Versions on Sunday October 25, 2015 @08:25AM (#10446722)
The web killed software versioning. Do we really care what version of HN are we reading? Or what version of Github are we using? Not at all, we just use it. Browsers are moving in that direction as well, same as OSes like Android and iOS.

Update the parts whenever needed without the user even noticing.

Re:The New York Times reaches 1M digital only subscribers on Monday October 05, 2015 @02:44PM (#10333873)
How much is the monthly subscription? I'd gladly pay up to $10 if they provide extra features like stock tickers, sports scores, extras, alerts, and a nice mobile app.

Btw, what are the member's advantages compared to any regular web user?

Re:Test driving the three-wheeled Elio – 84 MPG and Only $6,800 on Saturday September 19, 2015 @05:48PM (#10245644)
I like this better.

http://www.twike.com

Not the ugly one but the modern stylized concept. It has to be beautiful to sell because if you look like a dork it will be a flop. Cue the segway.

I like my black sphere theory better, but interesting the similarity with a cone nonetheless.
I've always thought they're not really holes but black spheres that absorb everything close to them including light.
Re:Japanese mini Segway “WalkCar” on Saturday August 08, 2015 @02:41PM (#10028238)
Malls and airports, for rent, $5 an hour, millions sold.
Take an orange and a lemon and separate them two yards away.

That's how they'd look from space.

I killed it five years ago and haven't missed it a bit.
Re:Fist-sized 11M-to-1 gearbox on Thursday July 09, 2015 @11:30AM (#9858422)
I want to see the inverse.

Eleven million spins with one rotation of the shaft.

Re:The Plan to Feed the World by Hacking Photosynthesis on Monday July 06, 2015 @09:53AM (#9839051)
I believe the answer is not in agriculture but in nanofoods. The ability to produce food from manipulating basic elements.

But for that we need to tame energy first, then water, then food.

Re:Energy on Monday June 29, 2015 @09:30PM (#9802295)
I believe the most important unobserved benefit from decentralized solutions is the wave of innovation it would spark.

Private moneys would compete for a slice of the pie bringing to market millions of ideas putting the pedal of progress to the metal.

Re:Energy on Monday June 29, 2015 @09:19PM (#9802252)
They'll go to Walmart to buy a replacement the same day just like they would replace any home appliance.

By that time, I bet batteries would sell for less than a thousand, much less.

Re:Japan Building Giant Battery Systems to Store Solar Power on Wednesday June 24, 2015 @02:00PM (#9773307)
With ten billion dollars we could have one million houses with solar roofs and powerwalls, a whole city unplugged. I'd like to see government invest in a project like that.

I believe distributed generation is the future.

Can I go with the four of you?

I am Venezuelan and let me tell you, this country is the anus of the world and we don't even have toilet paper.

Please be compassionate.

Re:How to Make Online Dating Work on Sunday June 14, 2015 @11:46AM (#9715279)
Sure, money for marketing is needed, plenty of it. I meant for development, you know, funding.

The odds are not infinitesimal. Matchmaking is like a fad, you can come up with ideas every year and people will flock to your site, because not all of them work. Of course you have to break the profile/test mentality and try new venues.
