The name is terrible. Maybe this is vanity, but theres too many conflicting names. Delta airlines, delta dental, delta faucets, etc
Re:AICodingHorrors – The price of AI-assisted coding on Sunday July 20, 2025 @11:26AM (#44626078)
It shows that some measure of supervision is needed. That firing all of the coders, and unleashing bots is probably a bad idea (at least for the near future)
Re:The Monster Inside ChatGPT on Friday June 27, 2025 @11:59AM (#44397818)
I dont know why people seem to care so much about llm safety. They’re trained on the internet. If you want to look up questionable stuff, it’s likely just a google search away
It’s interesting. I think the real way to do this is gradually scale up. Crossing the ocean is hard mode. Instead start by something much shorter and land based. Then you at least have a stable platform to work on and can focus on the other hard problems
The thing is, its not just Meta. It's anyone with a square inch of pixels that you can slap an ad on. Google, Amazon, Microsoft, etc. Meta gets a lot of flack, but it's easy to stop using Facebook. It's a lot harder to stop using Google or Amazon.
Re:Amazon Closing AmazonSmile on Wednesday January 18, 2023 @08:34PM (#34435647)
This is really about cost-cutting. If Amazon felt it were about being spread too thin, the obvious solution is to make a short list of charities. Or increase the amount donated.
Re:What the EFF Is Gemini? on Wednesday January 18, 2023 @10:36AM (#34427953)
I hate to say this, but it’s a poor choice of names. It’s going to be overshadowed by the crypto company.
This seems more like trying to capture money. If this was about privacy, they could have just gone with duckduckgo.

It looks to be decent at helping sensitive teeth, but not so much for cavities: https://aap.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1902/jop.2010...

Given that Tesla has no PR department, you might be waiting a while for that
This is an intentional leak.

Apple is trying to see what the reaction is. They've got some negative press recently for pricing things a little too high (say a $1k monitor stand or $700 wheels). They're watching to see what the reaction to the rumor is. If people say 'no one would ever pay that', then they'll dial it back a bit. If the reaction is 'eh, maybe for those specs', then full steam ahead.

Either way, they can just deny the leak as a rumor without any basis.

I don't see how this is specific to tech firms? Why not any other company currently WFH-ing?
Re:Applebot on Monday August 31, 2020 @11:42PM (#24338325)
The context for this is that Apple is rumored to be starting their own search engine

Re:How Sustainable Is a Solar Powered Website? on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @09:42PM (#22188433)
This misses the elephant in the room. Every major tech company is already pushing hard towards renewable and/or zero carbon. The problem isn't tech, it's the other companies (chemical, oil, agriculture, etc).

The unintentionally amusing part: "To continue reading... Subscribe or sign in"
Re:Ask HN: How do you take care of your hands? on Monday September 23, 2019 @01:40AM (#21046211)
It's a personal thing. What works for one person might not work for another.

That being said, definitely invest in an excellent keyboard and mouse. If you are going to spend 8+ hours a day using it, make sure it's comfortable. I can't stand anything which isn't a mechanical keyboard. I have tried various funny looking ergonomic models but haven't found them necessary yet.

Also, don't overlook your chair and desk. They might be forcing your hands into an awkward position.

Re:AWS DeepRacer League on Thursday March 21, 2019 @01:10AM (#19449412)
I got a DeepRacer car at Reinvent, but three months later I still can't use it :(

Access to the DeepRacer section of the AWS console hasn't been made public, and I don't think there's any other way to program it.

Re:Key iPhone Source Code Gets Posted Online on Thursday February 08, 2018 @01:55AM (#16330679)
Serious for us, maybe. I'm not sure if it's serious for people that actually move stock prices. Intel is actually up since Spectre/Meltdown...
Re:Key iPhone Source Code Gets Posted Online on Thursday February 08, 2018 @01:52AM (#16330668)
The newest copyright on any file is 2015. The source code might be quite old.

(Yes, I realize that a copyright header doesn't actually stay in sync with patches. It's just the only indicator of date there is)

Re:When did software go off the rails? on Thursday August 17, 2017 @02:14AM (#15034181)
This keeps coming up every couple of years, but is just wrong.

In the last 5-10 years, there hasn't been almost increase in requirements. People can use low-power devices like Chromebooks because hardware has gotten better/cheaper but software requirements haven't kept up. My system from 10 years ago has 4gb of ram - that's still acceptable in a laptop, to say nothing of a phone.

If you're going to expand the time horizon beyond that, other things need to be considered. There's some "bloat" in when people decide they want pretty interfaces and high res graphics, but that's not a fair comparison. It's a price you pay for a huge 4k monitor or a retina phone. Asset sizes are different than software.

I won't dispute that the trend is upward with the hardware that software needs, but this only makes sense. Developer time is expensive, and optimization is hard. I just think that hardware has far outpaced the needs of software.

Re:They do take security seriously on Monday July 06, 2015 @12:19AM (#9836746)
> I think this article doesn't just blame the victims of those attacks, but subjects them to public ridicule. Neither helps anyone, least of all end users.

I think public ridicule is necessary as basically the only way users have to encourage security. Users are being harmed by a company penny pinching on security and virtually never receive any compensation.

Re:Steam Hardware pre-order on Thursday June 04, 2015 @11:18PM (#9663705)
I really wish there were standard models so game developers could optimize the settings. These are just low-end PCs that manage to cost more than a PS4 or an Xbox One.
Re:Steam Hardware pre-order on Thursday June 04, 2015 @11:12PM (#9663681)
I don't think any of these meet the minimum Oculus specs. You need a GTX 970 which costs like 75% of the entry model
