There are worse things we could be doing with our time. Personally I'd rather watch the synchronized swimming.
Re:10% of Cubans have left Cuba in the last year on Monday July 22, 2024 @10:56AM (#41035188)
If I did, then what?

In either case, "it's not racism, you don't know what they're like" completes my bingo card.

Re:10% of Cubans have left Cuba in the last year on Monday July 22, 2024 @10:37AM (#41034938)
I'm saying it was an anonymous story, lacking verifiable detail, spread in a public forum. Whether it's your personal truth or not is irrelevant to the fact that it's a rumor by definition.

Are you scared of definitions? Do you feel like dictionaries are written to gaslight you? Don't blow it out of proportion.

Re:Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate on Sunday July 21, 2024 @10:24PM (#41030359)
That's a bad faith suggestion. You know very well that it's better to have Harris focused on the campaign in this situation.
Re:Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate on Sunday July 21, 2024 @10:20PM (#41030342)
Yep. We've been a nation at peace since 1947.
Re:Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate on Sunday July 21, 2024 @09:59PM (#41030210)
I haven't seen a single clip of Trump in months where he hasn't slurred his words several times. Apparently we're all supposed to be okay with that.
Re:Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate on Sunday July 21, 2024 @09:54PM (#41030179)
> Who knows how old we can be in the future

Read as "who knows how much more entrenched future politicians will be able to be? who knows how many more favors they will owe, how many more donors will have their ear?"

Re:10% of Cubans have left Cuba in the last year on Sunday July 21, 2024 @08:55PM (#41029900)
That's what we call racism. Even if the anecdotes are from your own experience, you're still drawing broad ethnic conclusions from them.

What do we call anonymous stories, lacking in detail, being circulated in a public forum? Yes, those are rumors.

Re:10% of Cubans have left Cuba in the last year on Saturday July 20, 2024 @11:23PM (#41022132)
Crowdstrike? Is that you?
Re:10% of Cubans have left Cuba in the last year on Saturday July 20, 2024 @11:15PM (#41022100)
It's a good band name
Re:10% of Cubans have left Cuba in the last year on Saturday July 20, 2024 @10:37PM (#41021969)
And that's what we call racism.

> scholarly work stating that they were warmly welcomed 4 centuries ago

Yeah, that doesn't sound legit. Any general sentiment from that time period is lost, and the best your scholar can do is project the lens of the present onto sources from the past. To be fair, all histories are done that way.

This is going to mess up the arrival date for those compression sleeves I ordered on Prime Day, isn't it?
Re:Panic at the Job Market on Friday July 19, 2024 @11:35PM (#41013824)
I noticed the third stonecutter wasn't doing jackshit.
Better switch everything over to Autokey
Re:Crowdstrike Outage Causing Widespread Issues on Friday July 19, 2024 @06:28PM (#41012074)
I'd endorse this. That way when my hypothetical PHB wants to know why something is taking so long I can say "See this part? Someone could die if we don't refactor it."
I'm wondering what that channel would have looked like when there was water flowing in it.
That doesn't sound unique or interesting. Sulfur? So what. Not clicking.

Surprise? Well, I was already pretty sure if it was water or life they'd have said so, but now I'm intrigued. I clicked and now I know why the find is actually pretty interesting after all.

Re:Trust as a bottleneck to growing teams quickly on Thursday July 18, 2024 @10:34PM (#41001629)
Propaganda. The two major deficits stopping otherwise qualified people from being individually effective are (1) money and (2) time. If those are taken care of, any persisting problems are organizational.
Re:Panic at the Job Market on Wednesday July 17, 2024 @07:52PM (#40991377)
He's not wrong. 90% of coding interviews are completely unrelated to the job. Here are some experiments for you to try in your next one:

- if it's a super difficult problem, remark how fascinating it is and ask the interviewer how often they're doing this stuff

- if it's FizzBuzz or something else that is solved and has a known value, propose hardcoding the answer as a constant and printing it without doing any computation, and see how that goes over

- if it's not one of these, you might be in a 10% case

My favorite was when I applied at, let's call it "StoreJogger" at as entry level engineer. This guy comes in for the technical interview and asks me a question that basically boils down to "how would you make StoreJogger?" and I remember thinking that if I knew the answer, I sure as shit wouldn't be in there. Yeah I guess it was technically a relevant question.

Lmao. That sort of simping for incompetence belongs on LinkedIn, not here.
Re:Panic at the Job Market on Wednesday July 17, 2024 @07:35PM (#40991292)
I ran into that one hard once.

"Hey, money isn't coming out of this function correctly. No, really, here's the math..."

"PACK UP YOUR DESK NOW."

Re:Panic at the Job Market on Wednesday July 17, 2024 @05:37PM (#40990583)
The interview process should resemble this then. IIRC it mostly doesn't, but it's been a while since I've had much experience past the "thank you your interest" e-mail signed "Sincerely, (name of company)" from a no-reply address.

Maybe the author doesn't want to lower his standards. Fine. He's got the rent to worry about. I've got a lot more than that on the line and I'm more than willing to fill that role if they'd just let me get my foot in the door.

Heh, good for you! I can't wait til I'm at that point too.
Re:A word about private attribution in Firefox on Monday July 15, 2024 @06:44PM (#40972109)
IIRC, iOS doesn't allow any browser that isn't a wrapper around Safari.
Re:A word about private attribution in Firefox on Monday July 15, 2024 @06:43PM (#40972105)
Ladybug? Yeah, it seems like a long shot, but we need it.

> You can't reference Claude Shannon and information theory and then say a system to serve ads that preserves privacy can't exist.

They didn't say that. They said this isn't it.

Re:How to Know When It's Time to Go on Sunday July 14, 2024 @04:35PM (#40963061)
That's what I'd have thought, but it's looking bleak. Who do you have in mind?
Re:How to Know When It's Time to Go on Sunday July 14, 2024 @04:02PM (#40962868)
Right now I'm in this goofy spot where I'm probably walking away from it. Nobody wants backend and API-layer Java devs anymore. They probably need them, but they don't know it in the midst of the AI bubble.

It's inline with what people usually pay for fonts.

Nah, the C-suite fat cats just need to take a few million less for running a shitty business, and use the money to hire people who actually have to do stuff for customers.
