If you're not much of a board game person this is _wild_ because Catan gets annoying with 1 beginner since you can see how they end up gifting the win to someone else.
So he either knows people are letting him win (and got mad at the newbie who didn't?) or he's too stupid to see them make mistakes or he thinks they're idiots but he keeps playing with them?
I dunno there was a lot of stuff from her that was damning but somehow this is the most damning thing to me, real insight into the man.
Reminds me of the UK prime minister's close protection officer and inner circle all gambling on the election date and getting caught.
What degree of corruption did you witness that this seemed OK?
Wild.
This is why every time you go to the shops you have to carry your own standard weights and balance scale! The idea that society could regulate the weight and volume of every product in every shop is simply preposterous!
So the concentration of economic power has made the number of oligarchs he needs to capture quite manageable.
At some point the courts should be able to say "ok fine you were the directors responsible for the company you're going to prison n years, sorry."
Bet we'd see a lot more documentation suddenly appear.
But I'm in the middle of a big re-work so it'll get a lot better when I finish that.
I built this little service to add UK specific political location data to Action Network CRM. 300 lines for the actual service!
code here: https://github.com/jms301/ANUpdaterUK/blob/main/src/index.js
Sure it's only taking a webhook, reading an API, looking up a db entry and then updating via API.
But just knowing it's running on someone else's infra and there's so little code to validate is very comforting.
Prior to this I had a version running on a VPS and yeah I can do it. But you end up with a LOT of code / config to run the web server, the queue, the database... And any of that could be introducing bugs and security problems.
Is probably from the USA.
If you can only succeed because you're government is holding back others at the barrel of a gun do you really deserve to?
So even if we could get to net zero today we'd still be in for 5-10 years of worsening impacts.
And we're not even talking about getting to net zero today. Even in the UK where we've exported and reduced emissions a long way net zero by 2035 is seen as a wildly optimistic scenario.
So it seems to me inevitable that we're going to need to do geoengineering. We mustn't let this delay emission reduction but I think at this point we should get to where we're going asap so we can research it properly.
Guess now I know why.
After this the CEO comes along and says that the policy is actually not to bill for this kind of event... But the company actually tried to bill this user 3 times... soo it all stinks really.
The basic reason for this is down to markets being very very good at resource allocation. Lets imagine you're a huge beef eater and previously ate 2 cows worth per year. You reduce to zero cows. What happens?
The price of beef drops a tiny tiny bit. Other people who previously couldn't afford beef quite so often now can and increase their consumption. If a large number of people switch away from beef eventually the price reductions feed through and some farmers go bust or else reduce their production. But since the externality isn't priced in chances are _someone_ out there will consume it.
To tackle this kind of thing you need the externality brought into the pricing system. Add taxes somewhere on the chain of green house gas production. It doesn't actually matter where you tax it, could be a sales tax, could be a production tax. You can even make the tax revenue neutral and pay it out to everyone. You can tax imports to keep a level playing field...
Of course doing that would massively hit the profits of fossil fuel companies and their share holders so they're lobbying like crazy & paying millions to promote bullshit like the idea of 'carbon footprint' to stop it happening.
The steeper the slope the higher the power output.
I think the real question on tidal generation is how costly is maintenance. The sea is just a very unforgiving environment. Salt water and marine life fouling everything are difficult engineering problems that just add more expense than I can imagine wind turbines having.
If they can make tidal work I guess we'll end up in a world where most of their profit comes from keeping the grid alive when it's a calm and there's no sun.
I guess this may mean these technologies aren't going to really take off until we stop using hydrocarbons to make up the shortfalls...
"How do you get legislation passed to regulate advertising when it controls almost every media and social media platform through which voters can get informed on the topic?"
And if you have an answer to that I'd dearly love to hear it - I work at a campaign for electoral reform in the UK and we have near enough the exact same problem.
