In 1999 we'd be having this conversation in French? Really?

Honestly if you think social networks are just for people who speak english you gotta take a look at the world a bit more.

What am I really losing though by allowing access? The company is passing on info to advertising networks so they can try and get me hooked on more mobile games.

No one cares who you are, they are just trying to sell ad space.

How are we even close to a monopoly? I could maybe see a oligopoly, but even though amazon is big, its not the whole market.

Re:The Story of Why I Left Riot Games on Monday August 27, 2018 @06:47PM (#17855165)
I wonder if the culture has changed since riot did its whole "People who are toxic in game are toxic in the workplace" and axed 25% of its OG staff.

Edit: https://rework.withgoogle.com/case-studies/riot-games-assess...

When I was a new grad I was hired at a company that did QA consulting. I was put on a team with 5 other people to create a integration test framework for a insurance company, who was rolling out a brand new software stack. It's probably one of the few times in my career that I had:

A) The whole team was responsible for the project, if the framework broke we took the blame as a team rather than crapping on individuals

B) PRs got seriously reviewed, there were strict rules about what was a quality PR and our team lead ensured that they were enforced. At the start of the project I lost several days of work because my PRs weren't of sufficient quality.

C) We got a start a project with no legacy code, building everything from the ground up. We had architecture meetings, everyone's input was vetted and valued.

Since then I haven't worked on a team where I felt that things were as cohesive. People make shitty design decisions and are not receptive to criticism. Lots of rubber stamping "approve" on PRs without actually reviewing the code, or accepting PRs without unit tests. Inheriting legacy code which was written poorly, but still has to be maintained. Nothing quite has the same feeling as that first project.

Then why not go after Google?
So you'd rather 1000 other people die, rather than yourself? What kind of logical exercise is this?
Can you really make that statement? Have you seen the video? There was a human inside the car, they could have hit the brake, but they didn't.

Seem like your making a pretty big assumption that "Human driver would try at least an emergency braking. Even if it’s too late."

Yeah lets get rid of laws and regulations, that will fix health care prices!!! /s
What is vegan and what is not vegan is going to differ depending on what each vegan believes. Diet is like being religion, you going to have different people drawing the line at different points.

Isn't this covered by anti-trust laws?

Society didn't really do it. When you mess with people with power often enough, eventually they will find a way to take you down.

My phone also knows that there is an accident on my route home, messages me before I get into the car, and tells me to take an alternative route. I cant remember the last time my GPS didn't navigate directly to my destination.

Another way to phrase the question: Would you rather use a paper map or GPS?

You can certainly include both interest and inflation.
Re:FBI Investigation: “Louie Louie”, The Song (1964) on Wednesday May 17, 2017 @01:40PM (#14360794)
More likely your associating that style of music and the artist to that image. Essentially your hearing what you want to hear.

Can you elaborate?

I really didn't enjoy the clean coder. There was a strong feeling of "Management is trying to screw you over, this is how to protect yourself from them". If your really working in that environment, you should probably just leave rather than having to resort to tricks and techniques to manage management. There seemed to be some other silly advice (I.E. I used to listen to music and code until 4AM and then not remember what I wrote. Clearly the music was to blame.)

I'm sure that Rob is a great employee, and the book does have a few good points, but I'm not sure I took away a whole lot from it.

I disagree. There are people that I know that might not interview well, but have a huge list of people that are willing to vouch for them, because they do great work.

Do you have any source for that, or is it just something you know?
Re:Bicycling: The Safest Form of Transportation on Thursday August 25, 2016 @12:01PM (#12360109)
I used to read a lot of these articles, but the assumptions were just too silly for me.

there is no assumption about amount of extra time it takes to ride the bike. Somehow riding a bike gains you money, when in fact its the cost of driving the car that should increase instead, and the riding of the bike should be some trivial number per mile (cost of bike maintenance). etc...

The argument might be valid but its presentation is just silly.

The game has different layers. Personally I just try and catch pokemon. 'Winning' would be getting all 150.
Re:Should Prostitution Be a Crime? on Thursday May 05, 2016 @05:43PM (#11639871)
"Members of the human rights group in Norway and Sweden resigned en masse, saying the organization’s goal should be to end demand for prostitution, not condone it."

How would you ever set about trying to remove the demand for prostitution?

But... Both of those statements are true...

Default permissions are the ability erase everything. It actually requires work to remove those permissions.

Probably just your exchange admin doesnt have an incentive to change the settings.

I don't see how Java is more complicated than any other programming language. It certainly is not one of the more difficult ones. Assembly is complicated. C is arguably complicated. Java being complicated? I disagree.
Re:Evo, the First Prescription-Strength Video Game? on Friday October 23, 2015 @09:09AM (#10438305)
I've tried to find more information on what this game actually does, and how it treats ADHD / autism. I looked at a few articles and the Akili website, but details are pretty spare.

Does anyone have some additional information of how this video game plans to treat autism / ADHD?
