Responsibility is the ceo's/boards for most places. Not that they will be taking responsibility any time soon. But the subordinate thing still applies, I think.
Re:What you've got is in fact a people problem on Friday February 16, 2024 @08:13AM (#39396519)
Generally I think long tenure is a positive signal, but you have to be growing. If you are growing and learning, and enjoying it, I recommend you continue to do so. Stop and smell the roses while you're at it.

In theory, skills are what matter, but I don't find that true in practice. Appearance matters more. A long tenure is a good look to most.

is your name a portmanteau of "aristocrat" and "fun?"

I recommend looking for being content, or at peace. Happiness is fleeting.
Re:Ask HN: Are You Happy? on Thursday February 15, 2024 @11:11PM (#39393067)
How could you possibly even begin to speak for others like this?

[Edit] There's billions of people on the planet, and you only might know yourself, and I only might know myself. So we know about 0% of current people. Not sure how old the earth is, but there's roughly 3 trillion years since the big bang, and so we've experienced about 0% of that. Seems hard to make such a sweeping statement as yours. Maybe you're considering life span, to which I'd reply "tis better to have loved and lost, than never loved at all," which is to say a long life isn't necessarily a good one. And before you bring up averages, averages are poor metrics. 999 + 1 / 2 = 500, and 500 is pretty far from 1.

I'm not sure what you base your belief you lack skills on, but if you were working at a telecom, I imagine you have skills. Never reject yourself from a job because of your own thoughts - apply and let the company decide if they need the skills they see in you. That said, this is a tough time to be looking, so you might have to be patient. I would also consider talking to a professional about your worries.

I also heard this saying recently that I like, not sure who said it originally:

“If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present.”

wow that was fast!

Hadn't heard this before, but it seems true to me.
Re:What you've got is in fact a people problem on Thursday February 15, 2024 @09:35PM (#39392439)
I feel like this implies that for years, one must remain silent while building trust.

Be very very sure of what this supposed "career progression" is before you leave something you enjoy.
Re:What you've got is in fact a people problem on Thursday February 15, 2024 @09:13PM (#39392281)
The people in charge have the power and the responsibility to ensure they are doing the right thing, and that their subordinates are too. If your subordinates aren't doing the right thing, or aren't listening to you as the leader, you as the leader need to act.
Re:Goodbye Auth0 on Thursday February 15, 2024 @09:17AM (#39382970)
Very rarely; maybe i misunderstood your point. You're saying it's an institutional failure, but not one of the leaders? So, it's the governments fault they allowed corporate structures to function this way? Or maybe you want to blame the board of directors?
Re:Goodbye Auth0 on Thursday February 15, 2024 @08:28AM (#39382421)
> when shit hits the fan all its leaders can do is to find blame in the individual.

Or they could, like, take responsibility for their actions that led them to that point?

Re:Goodbye Auth0 on Thursday February 15, 2024 @08:18AM (#39382307)
The vast majority of employment in the US is so called "at will," which means an employee can be fired at any time for any reason, except an illegal one. And good luck with proving it was in fact an illegal one. Our "contracts" are barely worth the bits we use to store them. Why would we trust the company at all in this situation? It would be a mistake for every single person to take management at face value.
it's the third version of the beta, with the final version coming in March[1].

Ah yes, the classic "wage gains are eating into our profits" inflation.

Re:Tech Companies Are Doing Layoffs, Reposting Same Job for Less on Wednesday February 14, 2024 @06:18AM (#39368606)
We are in for some very bumpy times as long as the Fed sees rising wages as problematic inflation.

Except profitability in this case is actually sustainable, and can grow naturally over time. Good things take time, and wall-street's obsession over the next quarter, and the belief something can grow infinitely create self-imploding businesses.

Joe Grand has a fantastic video experimenting with the tech, where he builds "the world's thinnest boombox":

Could be. It's a strange comment to me.
Re:The purpose of a system is what it does on Sunday February 11, 2024 @12:43PM (#39336760)
As you describe it, the system is worthless then and does nothing. How long to wait is up to you.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halting_problem

[Edit]

Any observations can be an event, and a stopping point.

[Edit] I could put a resistor on the table and call it a system, and wait for it eternally, but I'm not sure that's useful. You need a desired outcome, and some limits to make rational decisions. Actually, mathematically, we can find certain limits.

[Edit]

You also can't prove a negative, as some future state may eventually disprove it. So you will have to assert something like "I expect such results at such time."

"arractiveness advantage?"
Re:The purpose of a system is what it does on Sunday February 11, 2024 @07:52AM (#39334659)
If a system takes action, or affects something, those effects, or lack of, are notable. For an electronic system it's simple - it is powered on.

[edit] You can also consider the transient and steady states:

[1] steady state: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steady_state

[2] transient https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transient_state

[edit]

My comment about the start doesn't actually address your concern about the end of the transient state. I think there are options. Any observable result can be considered the output of the system.

[edit]

Yoda would say "do or do not, there is no try." I prefer "there is only trying."

[edit]

i need coffee >.<

Hopefully the conference produces more than just tourism.

[edit] But if it doesn't, then it's just a fun trip for the delegates.

Conflict-free Replicated Data Types (CRDTs) are really interesting to me.

Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conflict-free_replicated_data_...

I'm pretty sure right to deletion does include account deletion, which I did not see anywhere as an option, but I could be wrong. As you mention, some of this might be possible by messaging the staff members directly. Last I read, there were like 2 moderators for this site who work their ass off.

As to your second point, reddit is not a public archive, or a court room, or any sort of entity that I would trust or expect to retain, much less make accessible, "public" discussions, technical or not. They have no obligation to give you anything, and the moment it's profitable for them to switch to pay-to-play, you can bet they will. Steve Huffman, the CEO of reddit, killed all the 3rd party apps accessing reddit, no? Not someone I will place my trust in.

[edit- added the below]

I would also add the court of public opinion is a place no one should be tried, and peoples' privacy trumps your desire for information, so it makes perfect sense that comments would be removed or stripped of a byline. Adding a byline redaction feature would be cool imo.

Ooo thank you!
