That approach (students working at their own pace) isn't very novel when you consider the fact that home-schooling has been around for a while.
Re:Gunsmith Uses 3D Printer To Make A Rifle on Thursday July 26, 2012 @02:21PM (#4297712)
Seriously, what happened to real journalism?

Articles are now being written based on a handful of unverified forum posts. Really?

That's exactly what I was wondering.

Ars writes an entire article purportedly about the picture, yet they don't even have the picture.

I play games because they are enjoyable.

You know the awards/achievements that seem to be included in every single game these days? I completely ignore those.

Re:Hacker who stole Facebook source code comes clean on Monday April 30, 2012 @11:40AM (#3909667)
The article even stated a reason for wanting to purchase the source code.

> source code would surely have been of interest to cybercriminals who attempt to use Facebook to perpetuate scams

Re:Hacker who stole Facebook source code comes clean on Monday April 30, 2012 @11:36AM (#3909652)
Do white-hat hackers normally turn themselves in?

(also, I think you meant empathize)

Re:Hacker who stole Facebook source code comes clean on Monday April 30, 2012 @11:34AM (#3909648)
Yeah... he stashed a copy.
Re:Zerg Rush Google Easter Egg on Friday April 27, 2012 @08:24AM (#3898725)
They've done this before?
Re:Megaupload Trial May Never Happen, Judge Says on Friday April 20, 2012 @06:25PM (#3870069)
Have they already wiped all of the Megaupload's HDDs?
Re:Code Club - after-school code club initiative goes live on Monday April 16, 2012 @10:00AM (#3847366)
I have a nephew that wanted "to be a programmer".

Turns out he wanted to make games, and he thought that making games was a lot like playing them. :\

You're over-thinking this.

I think I believe...

Your confidence is overwhelming.

Re:No joke: Ashton Kutcher to play Steve Jobs in biopic on Sunday April 01, 2012 @11:51PM (#3786205)
I thought Kutcher was pretty good in The Butterfly Effect.
Re:Chrome Multitask Mode on Saturday March 31, 2012 @10:26PM (#3782402)
This video is a lot like something you would see on The Onion.

Edit: I'm an idiot.

Re:Jessamyn Smith: Fighting sexist jokes with a Python bot on Saturday March 31, 2012 @10:21PM (#3782388)
The thing is: Women are the fuckees. The man is the one doing the fucking. That's just how nature works.
Re:Jessamyn Smith: Fighting sexist jokes with a Python bot on Saturday March 31, 2012 @10:18PM (#3782382)
TWSS isn't a case of objectification, though. Objects don't talk.
Re:Tell HN: Google Plus doesn't like my name on Friday March 30, 2012 @07:20AM (#3775399)
That's not really surprising, because Google are an anglo-company.

(As in, the company was born-and-raised in America. Not talking about the colour of their workforce.)

Most companies work that way, even if they are multi-national. Take Apple's Siri, for instance. At first, Siri only had support for American English.

Re:Jessamyn Smith: Fighting sexist jokes with a Python bot on Wednesday March 28, 2012 @09:40AM (#3766155)
I'm not calling her out for making a big fuss. I was just pointing out that, as far as I can tell, this joke really doesn't have its root in sexism.

Other people are saying the joke is sexist, I'm saying it's not. That's all.

Re:Jessamyn Smith: Fighting sexist jokes with a Python bot on Wednesday March 28, 2012 @09:17AM (#3766046)
Most slang words for penis (and other slang words describing men) are also normal words. (wood, hard, sausage, pork, balls) This is not the case with slang words for the female anatomy, which usually have no place in daily conversation. Google "slang for penis" and "slang for vagina" if you don't believe me/don't know very many slang words.

Consequently, something a women would say in bed is more likely to crop up in general conversation than something a guy would say in bed.

I really don't see this joke as being sexist at all, and it doesn't objectify women. Who cares if a woman might say that in bed? The fact that the woman is the one talking seems to indicate that she is less of a sexual object, not more of one.

Re:Codename: Obtvse on Monday March 26, 2012 @08:40PM (#3759375)
Umm, yeah. It still took one hour of his time, regardless of how much experience he has. If someone rips of this idea, and he loses out, he has lost one hour of his time; not ten years.
Re:Girls and Computers on Monday March 26, 2012 @08:36PM (#3759368)
Article titles should match their content.
Re:Codename: Obtvse on Friday March 23, 2012 @06:59AM (#3744592)
1. Svbtle is not yet popular. Six members != "popular".

2. Brand? What brand? It's a blogging platform. People don't want it because of a brand. They want it because it's a good idea (simplistic blogging).

3. Coke has a trademarked label. This is merely a website. What is dustin going to trademark/copyright? The ratio of whitespace to small, grey lines?

Re:Codename: Obtvse on Friday March 23, 2012 @06:50AM (#3744558)
That's a faulty conclusion. Being a professional designer has no bearing on how much time you spend designing something.

In fact, you could assume the opposite: that, because he is a professional designer, it took him less time to design the app than it would've taken a "layman". (I'm not forgetting about the perfectionism of many designers, mind you)

Re:"Lighten up" on Wednesday March 21, 2012 @08:05PM (#3737508)
Maybe the problem can't be fixed. As long as techies remain predominately male, this problem will persist.

And why are they predominately male? Either- A: Men, for some unknown reason, like programming better. B: The sexist environment drives women away.

Whichever one it is, the problem will not resolve itself. For A, as long as men like it better, and there are more of them, women will be seen as outsiders. For B, as long there are more men, some of whom are sexist, the women will be driven away and the ratio of m/f will stay the same.
