Re:Is the way the web industry “do” projects broken? on Monday October 27, 2014 @07:01AM (#8514787)
The article is correct, but you have to find a way to convince clients of your 2x estimate since they don't realize they are going to spend it over time with your competitor.

I know that many New Yorkers will disagree, but it is possible that human progresses is not actually measured by the height of buildings in NYC.
Re:Whats Wrong with Markdown on Friday October 03, 2014 @06:08AM (#8404887)
Adam I completely agree. Markdown is fantastic at something. That something is non-complex documents. What has happened since is that techies have taken that non-complex use case for the tech and made the logical leap that it is somehow a leas complex tool for complex cases. In other words "average users will understand this". The average user likely will for the most basic case and then will be thrust upon a poorly standardized, often needlessly complex hash of a markup extension set for anything more complex. All of this energy at the expense of HTML gaining more users and or web based WYSIWYGs being refined to the point of awesomeness.
Re:Ask HN: How do I set up a HIPAA-compliant server? on Sunday September 21, 2014 @12:52PM (#8347568)
We used to use a hosting company Layered Tech that had a HIPPA compliant offering. If you need HIPPA compoanxe I suggest getting it as a managed service.

Re:A live streaming platform dedicated to code on Saturday September 13, 2014 @04:14PM (#8313421)
My problem is that I work on private code bases. I can't stream it because it would expose sensitive info. Otherwise, I would like to.

This is super cool. It will compliment another tool I use called screen ruler very nicely!
Re:When Whites Just Don’t Get It on Sunday August 31, 2014 @08:25AM (#8249150)
I'm not sure Fresh Prince is a good example. Fresh prince had a huge following amongst all types of people and was specifically created to show another type of African american social exprience much like the Cosby Show. Both show an aspect of reality though, people tend to have friends that look like themselves.
Re:When Whites Just Don’t Get It on Sunday August 31, 2014 @08:21AM (#8249138)
African Americans are just over 12% of the population. The average adult has how many "friends" and how many of those are spouses of other friends and friends of family? I think that even if we there was zero racism people would still tend towards marrying those similar to ourselves. On a back of the napkin calculation this means any group might have less friends of other groups based on the overwhelming influence of family and friends of siblings and such alone. I think we have to look deeper than this stat.
Re:My principled objection to Markdown on Thursday August 21, 2014 @10:11AM (#8207397)
My objection to Markdown is that its just a proxy for something else and only fixes a very limited set of HTML issues. If you have to learn Markdown you may as well learn HTML. The security issues need to have pressure applied to the browsers to fix.

Re:Ask HN: Which is harder Front end or Back end? on Saturday August 16, 2014 @05:55PM (#8187703)
Front end is harder because success is less objective. I think that backend has for more technically difficult problems, but if you want a straight answer to this question without lots of caveats then front end is harder.
Not bad. Like the look. Some of your wording and errors makes it look like English is not your native language? Which is fine, but fix it either way. The bottom section is too casual. "If you would ask me". I'm on your site. I am asking you. Just tell me.
I like it.
Re:We know correlation does not imply causality. What does? on Sunday August 10, 2014 @10:33AM (#8159813)
Correct, I was a bit too narrow with my criticism. This article is a complete mess, not just that one phrase. It adds very little to a discussion of this topic and is all around poorly formed as is foreshadowed by a poor phrase choice early in the article.
Re:We know correlation does not imply causality. What does? on Sunday August 10, 2014 @10:27AM (#8159797)
Have you read the rest of the submission? It is likewise a bit of a mess. I believe that my assessment informed partly by this item was more or less accurate.

Re:CSS Triggers on Saturday August 09, 2014 @06:33PM (#8158194)
Or just scroll the key with the giant "Select a property" thing.
This is the "I got in today at 8:30 and will leave at 5:30 after taking a one hour lunch" mindset or the "Even if I am inspired at 5:20 I'm out of here at 5:30 and if I get into something right before lunch it doesn't matter because I have lunch plans every day" mentality. I don't think people should be overworked, but clock watchers are productivity killers.
Quality and scope are different aspects of a result. You can focus your diminishing returns on getting less done at a similar quality level. Meaning the returns may diminish, but your contribution is still a net positive.

Re:C500k in Action at Urban Airship (2010) on Saturday August 02, 2014 @01:57PM (#8125434)
Pretty cool. I wonder how their usage pattern effects this. I would suspect they have lots of connections doing very little, but that have to be able to wake up and act. This is in contrast to an HTTP app where the connections are largely active.

Fairly useful reference. Nees a key for the colors. I had no idea what the dots meant.

Re:Ethereum Genesis Sale on Tuesday July 22, 2014 @09:58PM (#8072560)
Ethereum has all the trappings of a cult (have you seen some of the nuball videos they have posted) and cults aren't known for having it all together.

Kinesis can strain your thumbs. I used one for 14 years. Still got major wrist pain and really bad thumb pain. Microsoft Sculpt Mobile and that style of keyboard ended up being my best option.
Now if they could better prove the value of antioxidants.....
